600 horsepower Corvette coming in 2009
Lutz has confirmed it himself. In an interview with Automotive News Bob Lutz said that a limited edition Corvette that will produce 600 horsepower will arrive in the 2010 lineup in the summer of 2009. “There is a distinct appetite for something beyond the Z06 in performance, beyond the Z06 in exclusivity and beyond the Z06 in price,” Lutz told Automotive News.
The car is already under development since we’ve been seeing spy shots of what were said to be the Blue Devil, Sting Ray or Z07 and GM’s Tom Wallace had confirmed that GM was working on the car. Currently the Z06 is the top of the line Corvette and produces 505 horsepower.

Wow. The $70K Z06 takes on the mere $115K 911 Turbo...
But a probably $100K Stingray might be an LP640-fighter!

Though it's a novel idea and I would love to see one of these ripping around, I do not believe more power in this case equates to a better car. It's already one of the fastest cars out there. The money would be better spent on making a better interior, better suspension and crisper gearbox to give the car a real edge over it's competition rather than just more speed at the drag strip.

Re: "Threepoint."
Your comments clearly indicated your dated and peculiar perceptions.
Any performance car entering supercar territory will naturally have more power as a standard. Surely you would not expect different. Z06 is already rivaling many exotics for half the price and that theme will be even further established with this new entry. Obviously there must be a power upgrade too.
With interior upgrades, remember, some seem to like this down-scaled effect. Its funny how Corvette takes ridicule for what Ferrari does and yet Ferrari (and others) get the "prestigious" perception while Corvette is seen negatively. If Ferrari made this car no one would have any problems with it looking painfully simple inside. (Besides, true supercar enthusiasts can always upgrade their own interior with all the money they've saved.)
GM has already said that the shifting, gearing and handling will be even tighter than a Z06 and the Z06 is plenty sound in all those categories already. Its clear to me that you have not driven one or paid close attention to those who have.
Finally, this 'only at the drag strip' thing is simply old-hat ridiculous and ranks your attention span on the topic. This Z06 would dust most cars on even the most challenging of tight road circuits. Ask anyone who's driven one competitively and check the slalom times in virtually any magazine.
Bang for the buck, performance pound-for-pound has few if any true competitors. This new super Vette will be stunning in all regards, but especially for the buck.

Let me guess GM will use their top engeneers from the 60s and increse the displacement to 12L to produce this power. Unlike other companies which increase their power through efficency and not displacement of forced induction.

Where do you get your info from? if you look around you'll see that most companies increase displacement of their engines to get more power out of them with successive models. And just for your info, the super Vette will have reduced displacement with forced induction much like other super cars e.g Veyron, CGT

Who are you, some old school BMW powertrain engineer? The arrogance in your blog would seem to suggest so.

correction to my post - the CGT is to show that even the P cars have high displacement engines

The Mercedes V8 is 6.2L, which is massive next to BMW and Audi V10 engines.

I challenge you to compare the gas mileage of the Z06 to that of ANY exotic with similar performance.
2006 Ferrari F430 Compact Coupe
City: 11 mpg
Hwy: 16 mpg
2006 Lamborghini Gallardo
City: 11-12 mpg
Hwy: 17-18 mpg
2007 Porsche 911 turbo
City: 18 mpg
Hwy: 25 mpg
Not only will the Z06 outgun every car on that list and hold its own in handling, it costs less to manufacture and embarrasses them with its fuel economy. This is in part due to the incredibly tall 6th gear but if it was that easy to get midsize sedan fuel economy from a 7 liter pushrod V8, then why can’t these top notch European engineers with all of their technology that is light years ahead of us yahoos in the US, get 20 mpg out of an 5 liter V10 M5, which is slower than all of the cars above. My brother has owned a 2006 M5 for about 6 months and he has yet to break 18 MPG ON THE Highway, the car literally needs to be refueled every ~330 miles, I know because we took it from North Carolina to Texas and had to stop for fuel a ridiculous number of times. Honestly, when I am ready to buy my sports coupe later this year or early 08, the Z06 is not in my top 2, but that doesn’t discount the effort that goes into engineering this car. The Z06 Blue Devil will be awesome, just like its little brother………

I have sung the praises of Corvette many times on this forum and I will do so again.
These guys (GM engineering) are in a street fight with a lot of incredible brands and they continuously produce results. Their passion for the car and the absolute dedication for what they do for it shows. I think they deserve huge accolades, especially given the current climate at GM, for what they have been able to accomplish.
They have one of the most successful racing programs in the companies history. Especially when considering the budget, look at the LeMans effort. Once again, consistancy year after year at the very top of the most grueling race in the world. These guys are into the very faces of Ferrari, Aston Martin, Spyker, Porsche, and Lamborghini among many others and still come out on top.
Some of the best engineering in the world is the simplest. If you can get a good'ol GM pushrod V8 to hammer down with the best of them and still be there at the end in victory lane, who can argue with that?
The fact that you can take a Corvette on a casual Sunday drive and be able to live with it, and then take that same car to an SCCA event and win with it for how much money are we talking? $70K US?
Put some Sparkos or Recaros in it and quit bitchin about the interior. They put what little budget they have to work with where it counts. If you want leather all over the place, call "Unique". They'll hook you right up and you'll still spend less then the competition.

First off let me say that I love Vette's and am happy they are making this car. For the price it will probably blow everything away (as usual). But come on Stone... who cares about gas mileage? Make those points on a thread about Camary's and Accords- Not Ferrari's and Corvettes. Anyone buying this car (or the F430, Gallardo, and 911 Turbo) could care less. Chances are that it is there 4th or 5th car and they won't drive it everyday. Lets get rid of the gas mileage, cup holder, and cubic space of trunk capacity argument. These cars are ment to perform- not be practical.

Seems you missed Stone's point here entirely.
He was countering the 'old push-rod tech' argument with the engineering of the gearing and the fact that this powerplant is still used for a reason - it is actually performing a task and is a testament that it keeps doing it. Meaning, performance efficiency and and practicality. This car is a GM product that does not acquire the prices that your exotics are getting. Corvette needs to be practical, too, to keep the market it has. The point he was making is that it manages to do so and STILL propel itself past its repugnantly overpriced rivals that can offer NOTHING besides just performance, and yet Z06 rivals or betters that, too.
That's the point he was making.

i dont think that 600hp for a ZO6 in 2-3 years is a lot, by then alot of cars are going to have high hp.

It doesn't make any difference how many cars have that much horsepower in 2 years. 600hp is alot of power, end of story.
