9,000 UK deaths a year caused by diesel fuel
The combination of economy and performance has won the hearts of millions of motorists. But Scottish scientists have uncovered disturbing new evidence that diesel engines are causing thousands of deaths each year.

Researchers have identified tiny soot particles from diesel exhausts - 30 times smaller than the width of a human hair - as the chief culprits in 9,000 fatal heart attacks in the UK annually.

Diesel shouldn't be blamed for all these deaths. Modern technology has been able to make diesel cleaner than before, and as technology improves, so will emission controsl regarding diesels and gasoline engines.

Also, heart attacks are usually caused by clogged arteries from years of unhealthy dieting (fatty foods), which I would say is the BIGGER FACTOR in causing arterial damage than these PM2.5 particles.

Can't wait to see the responses from the hybrid crowd...

Okay, this article seriously reeks of FUD. If you take a look at his other articles they seem the same way too. Very over-alarmist, purely meant to invoke fear.

I also love the line on the first page of the site: "Do not enter this site unless you agree to be bound and willingly submit yourself to the jurisdiction of Panama Law—your continued entry will found your consent. Please note your visit is recorded."

More FUD anyone?

this is BS. if diesel exhaust caused heart attacks in large numbers, why aren't the truck drivers around the world who practically live in their trucks dropping like flies?

Particulates from Diesel Trucks are not as tiny as those from Car Engines thus cannot get easiny into the Lungs & Blood Stream.

I cannot tell if the Research is TRUE,
HOWEVER I am very disturbed (And have Been For A While Now) with the Soot that Diesel Vehicles Emit under Hard Acceleration, Many times I have been benind a vehicle which dumps this cloud as it accelerates away and it makes its way through the AC system in my vehicle ( I always have it on) and Constricts my Wind Pipe (Involuntary Reaction which makes me think it must be bad for my Respiratory System).

So my Question Is.
If I, inside my car with the windows Rolled Up and Air Conditioner On can still feel the effects of these Particulates, What then about those Walking/Cycling/Windows Down or Roofs Down.

I just have a Very Bad Feeling that in a few years time we will discover that these Particulates are Much Worse than we Currently Recognise
(And are Rushing To Promote Simply Because Of Slightly Better Mileage Returns at the Detriment of Our Health)

Not Facts: Just A Very Bad Feeling

No more problems with particulate filter traps. I am sure way more people die here in America because of the pollution.

Yeah, now they'll just die from sticker shock once they see the price of bluetec and low-sulpher diesel.

Congratulations, now diesels are as clean as normal gasoline engines. All you have to do is pay 30% more for the fuel and drop $60,000 for the car.

I'm sure those 9000 people were happy knowing that they were killed by diesel exhaust rather than being hit by a hybrid car.

You will be able to get the VW Jetta with the brand new TDI for 20,000 or so US dollars. Cheaper than any hybrid. Happy now??? The new TDI will be CLEANER than you 1997 Jeep that you drive. Please stop killing people with your polluting Jeep. Please, think of the babies.

But hey, it's Europe's problem, they dug their own graves. N.America is too smart (or not corrupt) to subsidize diesel.

What an idiotic post.

It's our government which discourages diesels through unrealistic emission laws for them. Amazing that MB tackled this problem with Bluetec.

i wonder how many other people on the european continent have had inordinate rates of cancer and death?

one mite say, after the hundreds of deaths from Black Fog in the 19th century, londoners are more resistant to bad air than their continental cousins.

didn't the Black Forest get decimated, due to air pollution?

yeah, go diesel fans, GO! save a few pfennings, lose a few trees! and lives!
