If you know anything about extreme automotive detailing, one of the top guys in the business is Todd Cooperider. He's ranked among the top in the field and he has essentially become the voice of highline detailing.

It seems that as we're in the middle of Concours season, you know when all the old farts gather 'round and bring out their babied, never-driven hardware, Cooperider has started noticing something. The paint on these "Show" cars is simply not up to par.

How could that be? These are suppose to be the best of the best, right? Well, they're not.

...I’ve attended many concours events in the past, and while many would think that the majority of these valuable and rare collectables / exotics are in what I would call pristine condition, it’s actually the opposite. The real rarity is to see a car that has a high level of paint refinement...

...While there are many aspects of a car that draws one’s attention, the paint is arguably the most significant part of the car. The color, the condition, the gloss…they all draw people in. And if you have two identical cars side by side, the one with the better condition of paint is going to get the most attention. It’s not even worth arguing. It’s fact. So given this, why do show cars look so bad...
