A Volkswagen that drives itself?
It has proved one of the most endearing of cinematic legends - a loveable car with a mind of its own that can drive itself.
And for 40 years Herbie - or the 'Love Bug' - as the Volkswagen Beetle was dubbed in its first movie outing - has enthralled millions of families in a series of Hollywood sequels.
But now German car giant Volkswagen has turned fiction into reality by unveiling a fully automatic car which really can drive itself - and at speeds of up to 150mph.

Seems more suitable for the Cruise Control system, rather than really driving itself. Computers may malfunction, things may also obscure the system from performing. Full attention of the driver is still needed. But it seems like a great aid.

This is fruit from the winning Diesel Touareg that won the first DARPA challenge for the United States Department of Defense in 2005. It completed 132 miles off road without a driver while passing through checkpoints and over obstacles. The only vehicle to score 50 out of 50 checkpoints.

Nice, I stilll think this kind of technology is still a long time off, maybe it will never come in completely, maybe it will. We just have to wait and see.

If all cars were like this I'll trade my BMW in for a nice Lexus. I would also be pissed.

I think VW had a sticker that said something like "Drivers not required" on its DARPA challange winning Stanley Touareg.

I thought that by now everyone knew that an A3 was a Golf with climate-control and better sound-system! :)
(actually, even the Golf has climate control now ... not much seperating VW & Audi anymore)

Yeah, but nobody's had the balls to video one driving on its own at speed ("We tried boss, but each time the car starts moving with no driver, the camera-man runs off!")
Kind of makes a car that parks itself look pretty lame....

finally i can start drinking and kind of driving again. whew! if i get this car will i still need the brethalizer ignition system or will the car blow for me? really tho its nice how it can drive through lanes of cones. now we just need to finish setting up the remaining roads with cone tracks(i mean remaining because most of our roads are under construction and already have their own cones.) really i assume it picks up the lines on the roads or something, but what about dirty roads or roads with no painted lines on them? and this guy who comments on this sites credibility does not list any alternatives as to what he considers top-rate car news sites. ive searched and this one is full of content wether its ripped or plagerized or not, i dont really care. it gives me something to do when i should be working.

VW electronics ? can somebody say lawsuit fast enough.. Mockery aside, I applaud VW for making such a great transportation device. Between them and yota, the future of the car is equivalent to your day bed. Warm cosy and about as involving *Yawn* ..as ....zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz *Snore* ZZzzzzz

This would allow people to commute from far far away without hating life. The future is alternative fuel auto piloting cars- even if auto pilot is only on the highway.
