A Whole New League Of Style? The 2008 Jaguar XF

INTRODUCTION

Challenging convention and setting its own rules, the new Jaguar XF fuses the style and performance of a sports car with the refinement, space and sophistication of a luxury saloon. This is the beginning of a new era for Jaguar.

The new XF: a dramatic expression of a bold new Jaguar design language, with a driving experience that exceeds expectations created by the striking appearance: relaxed and confident, with outstanding ability and control.

Resolutely true to the Jaguar philosophy of creating Beautiful, Fast cars, the XF goes further, adding a new dimension to the marque. The four-door XF has the visual excitement of a coupe, but room inside for five adults to enjoy an interior wholly contemporary in style yet uniquely Jaguar.

As well as space, the new XF's interior ambience is enriched by crafted, luxurious materials, sophisticated instruments and calm interior mood lighting. Engineering excellence and attention to detail mean the XF's interior matches the best-in-class for refinement, while Jaguar's intelligent use of technology and driver-friendly Touch-screen controls add new layers of comfort and ease of use.

Every XF model has shift-by-wire transmission control, with Jaguar's class-leading sequential shift system - its popularity already confirmed by feedback from XK sports car customers - used for the first time in a saloon. Shift-by-wire replaces manual shift linkages with electronic commands and gives every XF rapid and very smooth gearshifts - faster, even, than the acclaimed XK's transmission.

The Jaguar Sequential ShiftTM System gives the driver the option of one-touch manual gearchange control via steering-wheel mounted paddles. There are also multiple JaguarDrive ControlTM transmission modes, including Dynamic and Winter settings, which interact with throttle progression, Dynamic Stability Control thresholds and shift strategy to match mood and conditions.

But the most exciting feature of the XF's transmission control is the all-new JaguarDrive SelectorTM - an industry-first rotary shift interface that combines precise, intuitive control with space-saving packaging, to allow maximisation of interior storage options.

Other innovative functional features add more 'surprise and delight'. Air-conditioning vents present a flush dashboard surface until the ignition is switched on, at which point they elegantly rotate to the open position. Another new technology - JaguarSenseTM - introduces touch or proximity-sensing control for overhead console lights and the glovebox release.

Every level of audio system features at least eight speakers, with a premium system designed in association with highly respected audio specialist Bowers & Wilkins available on range-topping models. Radio options now include a Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB) system and Sirius Satellite Radio for the North American market, while the XF technology count includes Bluetooth® communications technology, plus optional iPod® and MP3 player connectivity with full-function control through the Touch-screen - and an auxiliary port on every car for other portable audio devices.

Other available features include JaguarVoiceTM control to operate audio and telephone functions, Blind Spot Monitor, Front and Rear Parking Aids and Rear Camera Parking Aid, Adaptive Cruise Control, Automatic Speed Limiter, Tyre Pressure Monitoring System and Electronic Parking Brake.

Mick Mohan, XF Chief Programme Engineer comments:

"The interior of the XF is a combination of style and substance. It bristles with innovative, industry-leading features. From the smart technical solution of the JaguarDrive SelectorTM, through the seamless efficiency of rotating vents, to the simplicity of Touch-screen control, the XF proves aesthetics and function can work together in perfect harmony."

Engineering excellence and class-leading structural rigidity are at the heart of the new XF's construction. The advanced body structure, which comprises high-tech materials and new-generation design techniques, maximises strength and minimises weight to give the XF superb performance, refinement and efficiency across its range of V6 and V8 engines. These engines include the quietest diesel engine in its class and a supercharged V8 that delivers outstanding levels of performance.

The new XF is best in class for torsional stiffness, and with a wide rear track displays excellent handling characteristics. These elements underpin a dynamic ethos that is driver-focussed yet supremely comfortable and refined. Just as its looks promise, the new XF excels across the board, in every role from a sports car to a luxurious long-distance cruiser.

AT A GLANCE

- The XF is a four-door Jaguar that fuses the style and performance of a sports car with the refinement, space and sophistication of a luxury saloon.

- The exterior styling of the XF is the first expression of Jaguar's new design language in a saloon car. With interior design that is the equal of the exterior in terms of crafted execution and visual excitement, the XF offers a truly contemporary, luxury environment.

- The coupe-like lines of the XF belie the amount of space inside: there is room for five adults in comfort, generous interior stowage and a boot capacity of up to 540 litres* (plus the opportunity to fold the rear seats and add a further 420 litres).

- Jaguar craftsmanship adopts a sharp new edge on the XF. Sophisticated instrumentation, a Touch-screen, modern materials and graphics complement new 'surprise and delight' features. On entry to the XF, the start button pulses red, like a heartbeat. Start the engine and the JaguarDrive SelectorTM rises into the palm of the hand, while rotating vents turn from their flush, 'parked' position to their functional open position.

- The best torsional stiffness in class delivers both refinement and dynamic performance - underpinning the driver-focussed yet remarkably comfortable driving experience.

- The XF will be available from launch with a range of four engines,** all featuring Jaguar's proven six-speed automatic transmission with steering wheel-mounted 'paddles' for manual gear selection (Jaguar Sequential ShiftTM):
- 2.7-litre V6 twin-turbocharged diesel: 0-60mph in just 7.7 secs (0-100kph in 8.2 secs) and a top speed of 143 mph;
- 3.0-litre V6 petrol: 0-60mph in 7.9 secs (0-100kph in 8.3 secs) and a top speed of 148mph;
- 4.2 n/a V8 petrol: 0-60mph in 6.2 secs (0-100kph in 6.5 secs) and a top speed electronically limited to 155mph;
- 4.2 s/c V8 petrol: 0-60mph in 5.1 secs (0-100kph in 5.4 secs) and a top speed electronically limited to 155mph.
- Key driving aids on the XF include Electronic Brake Assist, Electronic Brakeforce Distribution, Anti-lock Braking System, Dynamic Stability Control, Cornering Brake Control, and Engine Drag Torque Control. And, for the first time in a Jaguar, Understeer Control Logic which decelerates the car and helps to restore grip to the front wheels when required.
- The new XF has a wide portfolio of driver assistance features including a Blind Spot Monitor, Front and Rear Parking Aids, Rear Camera Parking Aid, Adaptive Cruise Control, Automatic Speed Limiter and Tyre Pressure Monitoring System. Bluetooth® compatibility, iPod®/MP3 player interfaces, JaguarVoiceTM, Digital radio and a single or six-disc CD player ensure owners can listen and talk as they choose.
- XF offers three levels of audio system, all controlled through the Touch-screen. The top-of-the-range Bowers & Wilkins 440w Premium Sound System option offers extraordinary clarity and faithful sound reproduction. Designed and tuned for the XF by Bowers & Wilkins, the surround-sound system delivers a powerful and vivid performance.
- In a first for a Jaguar saloon, the XF has the marque's new Pedestrian Contact Sensing System. This can mitigate pedestrian injury by firing actuators that deploy the bonnet, resulting in a cushioned space between the bonnet and engine hardpoints.
- Three trim levels will be offered, depending on market. The Luxury level will be available with either petrol or diesel V6 engines (and naturally aspirated V8 models in the US), Premium Luxury (with petrol or diesel V6, or naturally aspirated V8), and SV8 (with the supercharged V8 petrol).
- The XF is available to order now, depending on market. The first cars will be delivered to customers in March 2008. Pricing is available from individual markets depending on the start of customer orders.

All performance figures are manufacturer's estimates.
* With Jaguar Tyre Repair System fitted. Volume with spare wheel is 500 litres.
** Dependent on market choice.

If this is the best Jaguar can come up with then let the brand die a dignified death.

WHAT A LET DOWN!

I sure was looking forward to something great from Jaguar. It seems like Jaguar has always had this certain 90% rule. They take a great concept and produce it. On paper it's great but like all Jags, it just lacks something pure.

I have always loved Jaguars. They were beautiful cars and used top-notch materials inside: But they wouldn't run. Nowadays Ford has managed to completely cheapen everything about Jag. I'm quite bitter.

The outside looks like a Subaru Outback/Ford Mondeo.
This inside looks like a Lincoln.

What a trash bin. I'll pity at anyone who drives this just as I pity at those who drive the X-Type.

im confused, about alot of what you say here about Jaguar, im not a Jaguar but ive always liked the "look" of their cars. since when has jaguar produced high qaulity anything......realistically Jaguars during Ford days were/are alot better than old Jaguars because old Jaguars were awful cars, beautiful styling inside and out, cut rate materials, cut rate components, poor reliability, and were no where near durable, so i fail to see how Jaguar has failed its heritage with Ford because Jaguars have never been as good as they are now(and they arent that great now) as far as this XF i think its a let down as well. the car is very nice looking just not a Jaguar which im sure is what they were aiming, it almost seems generic. it reminds alot of the idea behind the mark x, a Jaguar created with the same mission as the XF, and it was a failure because it far removed from Jags heritage. which than spawned the XJ. Its just sad the interior is an exact copy of the A8 right down to the hazard lights. but a great interior to copy, just not Original or becoming of a marque like Jaguar

bmwdrv,

I only read your post now.

I am glad that I am not the only one that sees the copying of the A8 interior. You are right, the new XF is generic looking.

bmwdrvr, I agree that the layout is the same as the A8's. But what I find strange is that they didn't even use nearly as much wood as Audi did on the dash- they switched around the aluminum and the wood. And frankly, Audi's interior looks more British. It has acres of wood.

I guess the Jag makes up for it on the doors. I have to say I'm liking the XF more and more.

I think it looks GREAT!!Its BEAUTIFUL!!
I really hope they succeed with this car....but I have to say that to succeed, they will need more than good looks. In the luxury car market today, there is increasing competition and and looks are only one factor.....the other important factors are image (jag has that), reliability (they need to get that, or else its a lost cause...people look at reliability), comfort...(they have never lacked comfort...but they need to keep pace with the others in terms of the technology that is available inside the car made by competitors).

People do not take the comments of BMW and Lexus fanboys seriously, because the potential buyers and Jag lovers can see that this is the most beautiful looking car in the segment. And Lexus fanboys check out the profile of XJ6 and MKII before you guys unknowingly cry out like babies proclaiming that the XF has the profile of a big fat GS; And why don't you guys use your own brain instead of copying and pasting
comments about the design(ex: lincoln interior) that you guys have heard from somewhere.

And for Jag lovers, check out the high res pics at autoblog, and you guys will agree why the opposition loyalists are so green with envy, and are trying their utomost best to pass on some bad comment.

I was on my holidays in Spain.

Very sunny, hot...it was great.

We drove there in my mother's 3 series convertible (which did not put a foot wrong).
England to Spain is not a short trip, and it highlights my point about Europeans needing luggage capacity. An LS 600h has a smaller boot than our 3er...we wouldn't be able to cope if we had one.

Well great job "Hyundai", you have figured out some similarity between the XF and a Lincoln Navigator, the thing is that you have forgot to mention that the center console buttons on the XF have real aluminum surroundings and the buttons are soft touch ones like the ones found in Dell XPS, whereas the ones in the Navigator are cheap plastic replicas. Read out the Jaguar manifesto in Autoblog and you'll know how quality the interior is. And people wait till the pics from Frankfurt comes in, I am sure callum and co would not work so hard on the whole body and would just mess up the front: i have a feeling that the front will look different in real life. And the headlamps were made larger to give the front a rather imposing look. And S80 keeps begging to live up to the beautiful body of this XF. I can understand if ppl have reservations about the front, but if someone is not liking the car from the back and side profile, then they must have bad taste.

Once again I say this with sureity. The car will go down as a gorgeous success. It will translate much better in 3 dimensions just like the XK did. Last year you were all saynig ths XK was a dog and when you saw it in 3D you were blown away. This cas has some great lines along the side and hip that don't translate in the photos or even show up at all. The angles on this car are not as simple as the are on the Audi Volvo or the Lexus GS. There are compound curves and deep aero features on the hood that are tough to make out. Look really closely at the high def pics. Take your time and look very closely/ it's like a movie sequel. The second movie is never liked as mush as the first that spawned it but often times it is better produced and acted and if it had stood alone as the first movie it would have been loved as great. Thats what we have here. Just hold it out on it own merrits. Don't hold it up against an unreasonable hope that a concept would evere make it to market. Concepts are design studies. Otherwise they would not be considered conceptual. Take it on its merrits. The XF is a quantum leap in tecnology. Clearly the class leader in technology. It has leap frogge the 5 series ( an ugly car thats universally loved). The XF is not ugly. Standing on its own its quite elgant. Let hold on until its on the ground.

I will get to see it in the flesh in October. I'll bet you its gorgeous!

it will sell like crazy being that 5 series, a6, e class, gs, and infiniti m are all older designs. people will love this new side of jag because obviously the old side hasnt done much.
i have a neighbor who has bought 6 straight jaguar xj's in the last 12 years and the only thing thats changed were the colors. what a tiring design. mercedes s class changes and still has heritage. jaguar should learn to evolve as well and maybe in 30 years when people miss the old design they can do a retro look and it will be fine, but as of now, such boring designs. the XF IS a grand slam home run.

I have noticed lately that people are copying Japanese design just as much as they are German.

Before you all flame, keep on reading; feel free to take me seriously.

XF:
Front;
http://www.autospies.com/images/users/Agent009/2008-Jaguar-XF/Exterior%20Jag%20XF%20(3).jpg
Rear;

GS:

Rear;
http://www.autogaleria.pl/fotografie/lexus/lexus_gs_430_prestige_2006_02.jpg

It is actually embarassing for humanity to hear people gushing over the XF. In my opinion, the GS is a much more classy looking luxury car. The GS manages to look more handsome, elegant, and expensive than the XF. Meanwhile, the XF looks like it could have been released in 2004 - nothing impressive.

There are however, certain areas where this Jag excels compared to the Lexus. The Lexus is exhibiting some age in the interior elements.

For example, the layout of the Jag scores higher in my books for the center stack thanks to Audi... please see these pictures as a reference:

http://www.caradisiac.com/media/images/le_mag/mag253/mercedes-s350-audi-a8-06big.jpg

vs.

http://www.autospies.com/images/users/Agent009/2008-Jaguar-XF/Interior%20(2).jpg

Lexus should have known that the GS's interior would not age as well as say, the A8's interior. Needless to say, the XF's interior should age well providing its materials were not lifted from the Navigator. Don't get me wrong, I think the GS interior looks great still, especially compared to the 5-Series, but Jag DOES really win when it comes to the smaller details. The jury is still out to lunch on the silver plastic. In general, the interior looks to me like Lincoln tried to emulate an A8's interior. Too bad Jaguar didn't do their own thing here.

Overall, the exterior is nothing too special, but the interior is the XF's stronger point. However, when you look at what the XF is in this point in time, it is hardly a revolution or even newsworthy.

Take a look at the 2004MY A8 to see how a car designed in the early 2000s can blow it away in design. I know that the A8 does not compete with the XF, but there is no reason why Jaguar could not have come up with anything more imaginative or groundbreaking, which is my point.

All-in-all, the XF is derivative.

Yes, the XF is good, but it sure isn't great.

Feel free to disagree; this is how I feel.

Strongly disagree.

You aren't a car designer.

So don't pretend you are one.

And a little note for further reference: 'copying' a design and looking similar are completely different things. The XF design was frozen (car design-speak for signed-off) before the GS came out. A car does take a long time to design, you know.

And where the XF pulls off the coupe-esqe profile quite graciously for a sedan, the GS has an unattractively high belt-line which makes it look fat.

So such glaring issues with the XF.

The XF is a very derivative car.

It sounds like I stepped on your precious little toes, Matthew! Did you flunk out of design school?

Don't try and tell me that the XF's center stack design was finalized before the A8 was released in 2003.

PS: You are assuming the details of Jag's design itinerary just to suit your argument. You don't know of the countless details that goes on in their studio that changes the face of their project every single day and where they get their influences from!

How about you take your conceited little head out of your tight British ass and tell me something of substance in relation to my post!

I'm not God, I cannot make substance from something that isn't there.

I think from the front it copied Bentley Continental GT and that's where they went wrong.

Same thing with interior, they wanted it to have the feeling (or whatever u say) of a British ultra luxury car (Rolls and Bentley) and again.....went wrong.

All in all, Jaguar a great try to be a baby or mini or half Rolls or Bentley but u didn't succeed.

I mean be what u are. A competitor and on the same level in everything as MB, BMW...etc and not Rolls or Bentley.

The above written is what i felt after seeing all the pictures.

Now on the final car, I really like it. It’s very unique and looks clasy.I mean not bad at all. It’s definitely there with the best in it's class.

Look-No production car looks excatly like the concept car. Concept cars are supposed to show the direction of design. Considering that Jaguar and Ford are cash strapped they did a good job on this car. Previous Jags were designed simply too retro and did not sell. They finally have come up with a contemporary design. True the side view might be a bit derivative of Lexus but rear looks like Aston Martin,the front looks like a simplified version of the CXF with grill that harks back to the original XJ6. If the car drives anything like the XK it will give any Beemer or Benz a run for their money. Remember all we've seen are pictures.We have not seen this car in the flesh.

When I saw the concept I was thinking. Hey, this might be a car I would buy. Now that I see the production model, I'm thinking...if I wanted a Lexus, I'd rather buy a reliable car rather than a Jag. Come to think of it, I might just get the new 2008 Cadillac CTS instead. It's American made and looks a whole lot better.

Jags reliability if great. Learn something about that, then come and say something.

WHAT A DOWNER!!! British looking Asian. The profile looks like a Lexus dump and the headlights look like a Tiburon. The interior looks like something GM would design in the dark. JAGUAR..WHAT HAPPENED!!!!!
