Crazy stuff right here, crazy. Good fuel economy probably as well (for a 500 hp SUV)I forecasted about 480, I was very close.

I really doubt it would come here. It would probably cost upwards of 80,000. Here is the link

This is a good upscale SUV with a diesel. Diesels have long been associated with fuel economy which usually targets those who are looking to save money. Who will buy these high performance, upscale diesel SUVs remains to be seen.

yeah the Q7 with 500 horsepower would be around $100K considering the Premium V8 is already around mid 50's

Hopefully, the U.S. will never get this. Nothing like U.S. diesel destroying the world. When will we convert to biopetroleum products and the metric system?

THIS IS SO STUPID!!! Why make a 5.0 TDI V12, instead of placing the 2.7 TDI V6 and make it cheaper.

The point of a diesel SUV is to have torque, and as little hp and fuel consumption.

Putting in a 5,0 TDI is bullsh*t!!!

Seems rather pointless. The Q7 3.0 TDI is functional and practical enough. This destroys the point of a diesel SUV.

Sure, it will be fast, but the fuel economy WILL NOT BE GREAT (better than a V12 petrol-engine though).

I don't think BMW or MB will follow suit by stuffing 12-cylinder diesels into their SUV's.

A v12 tdi, wonder what will be the displacement for the engine.A 6 Litre+.This V12 thing will not make any sense.I think V10 should be the max for any SUV.

BTW nowadays lot of hype from the Audi side(or is this only from the Audi's fans???)
Well let's see how many promises, hypes and tasks Audi will/can fullfill.

BMW definitely won't. They are developing performance V10 twin turbo diesel engine instead.

this is in the same vein as a performance hybrid. fuel economy isn't the main concern, performance is. yet somehow you guys have accepted the hybrids more.
this will cost at least 110000 dollars here.

VW TOUAREG has the: 5.0L V10 TDI & 6.0L W12

So it makes sense that AUDI Q7 should have similar or more powerful engines in its lineup.

These engines don't sell well in Europe. And they're not even offered anywhere else in the world, only in Europe.

The majority of Volkswagen Touareg SUV's in Europe are 2.5 R5 TDI's or the new V6 TDI. V10 TDI? Sounds wonderful, but the reality is that they're not big sellers.

Than how can they even think about the V12 TDI,wondering the main reason of being diesel will be lost.Fuel ECONOMY.

And Mr Author "Audirevolution",fuel economy is a better adjactive when u say a diesel. And u didn't mentioned it.
Not HP, 500BHP which u "HIGHLIGHTENED" more.

So Audi if planning one, complelet off the path of success.

how can they even think of a V8 hybrid, since the main reason of hybrid will be lost. Fuel Economy.

i take your quote and change it.
its the same thing, lexus could have made the rx a heck of a lot more economical, but they didn't. they chose the "performance" moniker.

You know this is funny, I really don't think of deisels for their fuel enconmy first. For me it's torque, torque , torque. Oh and then closely followed by awesome gas milage.

I still think a lot of people underestimate torque, but when you have so much of it on the low end, no matter what you pack into your car, it makes a huge difference.

Will, I sure hope you don't drive a car that you don't drive a car that is more (or about) 10 years old as it probably has emmisions worse than a brand new diesel.

Also, a new Blutec diesel WILL BE CLEANER than some FIRST GENERATION Priuses/Insights. Yes, that is true. The new Blutec diesel WILL be cleaner than a majority of 2001 Honda Insights. Isn't that funny. Think about that.

The same reason why Toyota stuffs a gas-guzzling V8 into some of their SUV's. Market demand.

Although in this case, the market demand will be very small.

There is something called EQUILIBRIUM,which Carmakers also imply in their cars when building one. When the sole purpose is not Only ONE.

HERE SOLE PURPOSE DIFFERS...PERFORMANCE WITH FUEL ECONOMY.

A V8 hybrid...where do u find one in Toyo/Lexus 's LINE-UP except in their biggest Executive Sedan.
LS600hL.

A V8 Hybrid...Is not a good combination. But the point is where does it lies.
Does it lies throughout the Lexus hybrid line-up?............NO
Only in their biggest Machine..........YES

Others all have V6 Hybrid.Recall Equilibrium.

So a V8 hybrid do make sense for the biggest Lexus, apply Equilibrium here and u will notice that for the sole purpose OF FUEL ECONOMY,lexus didn't put the V10 in their car let alone a V12.

LS600hL.BECAUSE HERE SOLE PURPOSE IS...PERFORMANCE WITH FUEL ECONOMY.

Jugnu,

Toyota has a bunch of V8 powered SUV's in the US. Yeah, the Europeans do to because we Americans want this. At any rate, a V12 TDI makes ZERO SENSE in Europe. Sure, it's a luxury SUV, so some buyers will have no financial issues with it, but still, it's rather pointless.

NOWADAYS, I am loosing my temper with some of the trolls here, especially LexusIS350. The guy has IGNORANCE written all over him. Plus, it's pretty obvious he's just a "kid" trying to act mature.

JUGNU-

The Lexus/Toyota 4.7L V8 is probably the most inefficient on the market. I have a fetish for the LX470, but the engine is simply terrible. It makes only 270hp (formerly 240hp!) from that huge displacement, and gets terrible fuel economy to match.

The LS430, which I thought had 300hp (as well as the SC and GS430), only makes 278hp according to edmunds, which made it a direct competitor to the S430/S350, not the new S550 or S500, but I know the 460 will change that. Can you imagine how Lexus is making a car with only 0.3 liters more than the last-generation, but with over 100 more horsepower, and simultaneously they are making a V8 as bad as the 4.7?

Like Will has said, this TDI V12 will get you the power of a gasoline V12 with 500 hhp (probably actually even more powerful with the 720 lb-ft of torque) It will also get you the fuel economy of a V8. So you get a power of a V12 gasoline engine but a consumption of a V8, isn't this what you have been saying Will all along.

Just to highlight how quick this thing will be. The VW Touareg with the 5 liter V10 TDI with 310 hp is faster than the Porsche Cayenne S, or the Cadillac Escalade with 400 hp. The Q7 with the V12 TDI will definately clear 0-60 in under 5 seconds.

The fuel econmy numbers are in (sort of) The Q7 with the V12 TDI will average 20 MPG. It is rumored to only consume 11.9 liters of fuel per 100 km, that is better than the gasoline V8 Q7. This compares very well with other 500 hp SUVs, the ML63 AMG that uses 16.5 liters per 100 km and the Porsche Porsche Cayenne Turbo S at 15.7, taht is nearly 40% more fuel used by the gassers. Now that is TDI/diesel efficiency at its best. If this came over right now, it would be the most fuel efficient and most powerful SUV in America.

The Q7 3.0TDI is a smarter buy, though. It's about as quick as the 4.2 (!), and it has amazing fuel economy.

However, if I was buying a diesel car, any diesel car in the world, I'd get an A8L 4.0TDI all the way. It can go 600mi on a tank of gas, is as quick as a 4.2 and has the most luxurious interior ever (hyperbole)!

Many of you have commented that a V12 TDI is silly. You're right. The problem is that the word "practical" has little meaning to Americans who make enough money to afford a vehicle like this. Greed and excess rule in America, and you can't blame Audi for catering to that mindset. Even if it does come to pass, this vehicle won't be sold in California for the same reason that the V10 TDI Touareg was never sold in CA. Emissions standards.

That said, a V12 TDI Q7 sounds kind of lame and it certainly has no practical value. Now, a V12 TDI in the next generation RS6 is a completely different story. I passed on the RS4 because I'm waiting for the new RS6 in late 2008, or early 2009. As of new though it's looking like the RS6 will have a V10 550bhp gas burner.

Diesel is an excellent choice. I really liked the look of this vehicle when it hit the press, I like it even better now since you can get it with a Diesel. I’m willing to pay more for a vehicle that will be fuel efficient and have tons of room to do things with, like carry bicycles, Tow a small trailer and pick up business executives at the airport.
I keep about 5-10 years, so the return on the Diesel investment would be a huge incentive for a guy like me. I’d rather pay a lot for a great vehicle now and enjoy it for 10 years rather than keep buying new car. I’ll tell you why, here in New York State, my county sales tax is almost 10%. Every time you buy a new car it is several thousand dollars just in Sales tax. So I want to keep the frequency of car purchases down to an absolute minimum and get a car that can give me a ¼ million miles. A well engineered can easily exceed that amount of mileage.

There is only one big problem, New York State has banned Diesel Cars, only commercial trucks can have a diesel because the State makes revenue off the Gas tax, and they don’t want people switching to Diesel. If you buy the car out of State and attempt to register it in New York, the DMV computer will list the car as Un-register able. Leave it to the State Regulators.

I'm not sure about New York, but I know there is a loophole in the California law that restriced the V10 TDI Touareg from being sold here. I could have had a family member who lives in Nevada purchase the car in that state and then sell it to me as used. The only problem is that I would have had to pay for registration twice, and after researching the Touareg and discovering that it has all kinds of problems including electrical gremlins, I decided to pass. I don't know if they corrected the problems in later models, but I didn't hear very many good things about the 2004. Figures, first year model. The V10 TDI caught my eye though and I'd love to se a V12 TDI in the next RS6 if Audi can fit it under the hood. Then again, a V10 gas burner that redlines at over 8,000 rpm's sounds pretty exciting as well.

IF the V12 TDI Q7 becomes a reality it almost certainly will not be sold in CA. I'm not going to assume this thread is credible though until I hear something official from Audi. Link anyone? When it comes to new vehicles I've found that it's best to keep the "I'll believe it when I see it" attitude because there are so many blogs etc. that spread untrue rumors, like Autospies for instance.
