Acura working on BMW X6 competitor
Acura confirmed yesterday plans to expand its lineup with several all-new models in an attempt to rival more established tier 1 luxury brands such as its German rivals, which currently offer full range lineups.

Acura’s lineup is limited to a handful of sedans and a pair of SUVs but the next couple of years will be very busy as the company prepares for the launch of a new coupe, a supercar and, according to these latest spy shots, a new crossover.

Spy photographers have managed to spot a new Acura prototype for a crossover model that’s expected to feature dramatic coupe-like styling similar to BMW’s X6.

They need to work on the 3 series and 5 series competitors (TL and RL) prior to trying anything else.

I agree. They need to ditch their FWD platforms in order to have a true competitor to the 3's and G35's.

Acura doesn't have an original thought in their brains.

That grill was an original thought. That's what happens when Acura thinks.

LOL @ oto60.

Kill the grill, Acura. The first thing you should note is that Tier 1 luxury cars are not hideous.

Understand savings of sharing platforms, engines, components, etc., but to reach "Tier 1" Acura needs to distance itself from Honda.

Acura should stop being so modest, they're already tier-1. Their vehicles are luxurious, sporty, well made and nice to look at what more do you need?

X6 competitor is not a good idea though... that's like over eating around the clock and going out of your way to not exercise in order to transform yourself into looking like Fat Ba$tard from Austin Powers :)

Whomever said Acura is Tier 1 needs to stop smoking the Rick James Cocaine. They are barely a luxury brand. A low volume, useless SUV is not going to help their brand.

Acura is a joke, their management is clueless.

The X6 is the auto industries only crossover? Somebody better tell Nissan/Infiniti, Toyota/Lexus, Ford/Lincoln, GM, Mazda and Chevrolet to replace their Murano/Rogue, Highlander/RX, Flex/Fusion/MKX, Acadia, CX-7/CX-9 and Equinox.

Since when is the one who arrives last to the party the inventor of the segment? Precisely why BMW has to invent new segments that nobody wants. Still waiting for that Sports-Activity-Bus to be announced, I'm sure that should be another segment buster.

There's basically no difference between CUV and Crossovers.

I suppose Acura doesn't feel the RX's lines are swoopy enough. Except for the rear tailgate, the RDX is probably more sporty and raked than the X6.

well to correct you rediculous rant......BMW was the first to market with a Performance CUV for the record with the X5, the same goes with the X3..Lexus was the first to sell a luxury crossover in America with the RX and the X5 followed soon after focused less on luxury on about performance and from both these cars aline of crossovers were inspired....but a crossover could be any number of things from a wagon to a car based pickup truck and so on.

bmwdrvr,
You ever heard of the RX? Do you even know what a CUV stands for? I doubt it if you think the X5 is one.

RX was the first crossover. X5 was just a marketing gimmick (although a very nice looking one) as it had no utility, no off-roadability and handled worse than a 5-wagon. Sort of reminds me of the X6 actually, but not as ugly.

RAV4 was the first CUV.

The RX is a Camry on lifts. It was the first crossdresser. Toyota fanboys seem to like this "crossover" alot.

That does not look like a X6 competitor. It's too low both in ground clearance and roofline.

Acura, which as we all know has always had FWD platforms, has now offered more AWD options. Smart move. What's wrong with marketing their SH-AWD as "the" Acura feature? It's what Audi does with Quattro, and it works very well in the snowbelt.

Now, most people tend to compare Acura with Audi simply because Audi is #3 of the Germans and Acura is #3 vs. its Japanese rivals (in the USA that is). Yet their products are never really aimed at each other. Instead, they shoot for BMW (in this instance) or Benz (in Audi's quest for 'tier 1' status). This isnt necessary.

Acura should focus on a full SH-AWD lineup to compete with Quattro. And BTW, "Type-SH" sounds much cooler than SH-AWD and should be used as the badge.

Also - wouldnt an Acura S2000-based roadster be sweet?
