The timing of Alfa Romeo's return to the United States is up in the air again.

On Oct. 30, Fiat-Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne is scheduled to unveil a new timetable for Alfa Romeo's upcoming models and international expansion plans.

Meanwhile, the Italian press continues to speculate that Fiat S.p.A. will sell Alfa to Volkswagen AG. Two years ago, Ferdinand Piech, chairman of VW's supervisory board, said that the German automaker was interested in Alfa, but he was in no hurry to strike the deal.

So here is an interesting scenario for Fiat. Let's say based on the Euro market conditions Marchionne decides to sell Alfa and build up Fiat with more models. Because of the Euro market Fiat has not been successful in selling larger B, C, and D segment vehicles over there.Therefore all Fiats are based on the 500 including the 500 L, the 500X and the Fiat Panda, as well as the 500.However in other markets where Fiat has not been or not had an issue with other size platforms Fiat sells different size vehicles. In North and South America for example Fiat sells an SUV/Crossover that Alfa was to share with the Jeep Liberty. Fiat creates a sister car to either the upcoming Chrysler 100 or Dodge Dart. Fiat restyles and renames the Alfa Spider to the Fiat Barchetta Spider and shares it with the Mazda Miata. The 4C to be built by Maserati is restyled and renamed Fiat Dino along with a Spider. Fiat creates a sister car to the Chrysler 200 but with different styling and suspension tuning for a D segment Fiat to be sold only in North and South America etc. but not Europe. Fiat eventually over time brings over these models to Europe based on the economic climate slowly improving.All the platform cost is reduced becasue the technology is shared with Chrysler. Fiat also would keep Lancia but only concentrate on the small platforms. Perhaps the 500 X and L can be restyled to market as Lancia's as well. One of these platforms could replace the Delta.Again depending upon Euro market conditions improving more compact wide platforms get marketed as Lancia's. Fiat moves it's headqurters to Michigan from Turin.

I doubt Fiat sells Alfa. They have big plans for the brand in North America.

On September 10, Marchionne showed the Alfa 4C and the Gulia to USA dealers at a big meeting in Vegas. He also told them that USA deliveries of USA Alfas would begin first quarter 2014.
