An Automotive Wish List - What Car Would you Bring Back From the Grave in Modern Form?
A couple of years ago some company (I think it was HP) ran a series of commercials asking the question, What if? I like the premise of the question as it demands thought to answer. Example, What if we mandated particular users stay on topic instead of spewing forth their consistent and sometimes annoying propaganda?
What if Ferrari offered BMW style subsidized leases that we all could afford?
What if Lexus and BMW merged to create a luxury and performance car powerhouse?
Yeah yeah yeah, I know those are borderline stupid questions, and sometimes the 'what if' question can get a little silly or absurd, but I want to ask a 'what if question that has been tossed around with my friends quite a bit, and in the process of sharing it with you see if you can't have a little fun with this one.
What if you could have a modern day version of a car (or truck I guess) no longer currently produced? What car would that be, and why.
For me 2 cars in particular come to mind that were great in their day, but would be phenomenal using current production techniques and engine design.
My ultimate fantasy would be a modern day Porsche 944. The 944 was a great car in its day, affordable for a Porsche, and absolutely beautiful. The timeless design has aged incredibly well and when equipped with larger wheel and tire combinations off current Porsche's, it still looks current. What if Porsche brought back to market a modern day 944. A front engined 4-cylinder sports car that combines modern engine technology with an updated design to allow a whole new generation of people the chance to drive and own this classic Porsche. With Porsche owning Volkswagen now, they could easily draw on the VW parts bin for a lot of infrastructure, and the 2.0 Turbo from the GTI is a great starting point for the engine that could be used. Of course since this is purely hypothetical I would propose a base price of $35k so that people could actually afford the car, just like the original 944. To me, that would be a winner.
The second car that comes to mind in having these discussions with friends is always a reincarnation of the 1st or 2nd generation Toyota MR2. Although the first generation MR2 does look a little dated with its hard edge design, the concept is brilliant. The second generation not only has aged well, but again with the addition of larger wheel and tire combinations looks down right current. Toyota has a wealth of options available to them in bringing this car to market, and if it can avoid pricing itself too high, I believe this would be an incredible car to have available to us at a low $20k base price. If priced correctly it would open the opportunity for people to add a second or third car to their fleet without breaking the bank given the fact that a 2-seat car isn't always the most practical. Toyota could even innovate with a modern MR2 by incorporating a hybrid drive train, and suddenly you could end up with a bargain basement competitor to the Tesla. Again, I can't see how you could lose with an option like this available in the marketplace.
So I ask you, what car(s) would you like to see brought back in modern form. This is one of those fun 'what if' questions, I am sure there is something I missed that one of you will pick up on.
So go on, have some fun - What if you could have a modern day interpretation of a car no longer built, what car would you choose?

Porsche 928 - a technological tour de force, with awesome power and handling, wrapped in a stylish, sleek, unmistakably Porsche body.
Possibly also the Lincoln Continental 4 door convertible. That was pretty cool.

The 1989 Lexus LS 400. The car that scared Europe and Cadillac too..When it was release it thad the Lowest Drag Coefficients of any vehicle and still to this day and it was then the fastest Luxury automobile in the World.
1989 Lexus LS The car that change history and the Automotive World.

I give you that silver, the LS certainly shook things up when it came out. It brought reliability and lower cost of maintenance, which was unheard of back when owning a luxury car be it cadillac or german meant spending an arm and a leg to keep it up.

Lowest drag still to this day? I'd reassess that one pal.
Changed the Automotive World? I'm pretty sure a hefty barge from Japan did less to change the automotive world than any number of more innovative cars, I mean what did actually do again?

The Porsche 912. Take a 911 body and put a 4-cyl Volkswagen motor in it. This would make a cheaper 911 that looks just as good.
Or the Ferrari 365 GTB Daytona, but the Ferrari 550 kinda took that role.

The BMW 2002. And/or the BMW 3.0CSi. Simple, beautifully designed, fun to drive coupes. The 1 Series and the 6 Series, ostensibly the updated version of those original coupes, are both ugly and overly laden with "stuff," for lack of a better word.

Jordanski,
VW didn't 'copy' the Caravan, they did a deal with Chrysler to re-badge the Town & Country as a VW for the American market only.

Why the hell did VW get a re-badged caravan. they would have done better with an oddessy or that mazda. those dated coarse engines are going to ruin vw's rep. VW should have at least put their own engines in there.

Lexus has to kill the IS-f before it can be brought back from the dead. The fact that BMW and MB have already killed it in every comparison doesn't automatically kill it from the Lexus line-up!

The BMW 8 series and M1. Both are beautiful timeless designs with lots of power and are fun to drive. Maybe BMW is already planning the M1 replacement... and the CS concept might be the next 8 series?

^Yes the 8 series, I wish they actually made the M6, instead of that one off prototype. Ans they should have made it lighter as well.
I've said it before and i say it again, Alfa needs to make the Guilia GTA coupe with the competition wheel flares. Make it RWD, with a 4 cly engined developed by Ferrari ( 4-5 vlaves per cly, Variable valve timing, 8000 rpm redline) Or a high revvin V6. I would think this would be a good 1 series competitor, and a good way for Alfa to steam roll into the US.

Honda Insight, it had the first generation IMA system. The current civic hybrid has the forth generation system (insight, '03-'05 civic hybrid, accord hybrid, '06+civic hybrid). With all the new tricks and advancements it'd get an '08 EPA rating (true to life) of 60mpg city/70mpg highway EASILY! (or if you want to use the pre '08 numbers 70city/80highway).
Subaru SVX. Subaru has no coupe, and not everyone likes the boy racer looks of the WRX/STIs. A 2+2 GT, front engine, AWD would be nice...but a mid engine two seat coupe might be even nicer.

Yeah the 850 would be a boss car to bring back. It would be something to compete with some of the world class GTs. Also I would bring the Ferrari 288 GTO.

I agree with the 944-968 porsche.. They really should bring back a sporty lightweight fun entry car. 35K would be good for a car with leather..( I could care less about sound system, I only want to hear the engine!)
Definately bring back a Subie 2 door coupe, Nissan 240 sx and for those with money but not enough for a lambo-ferrari-aston, id like to see the Iso Griffo return.. Chevy should get an italian made body for the Z06-ZR1 and add 30K to it. Or have ford build a mustang with an italian body and a good suspension with a nice weight loss diet..
