Analyst Predicts Gas Next Easter Will Top $8.00 A Gallon!
The approaching Easter holiday may be among the last of its kind. Gas prices are touching a national average of $3.28 per gallon, according to AAA and the Oil Price Information Service. Consumers already feel the pinch of rising fuel costs. But oil and energy expert Byron King believes travelers will be begging for current energy prices by this time next year.
"A gallon of gasoline in America today costs about 20 cents more than it did in May 2007... when oil cost only $65 per barrel," says King of http://www.energyandoil.com. Oil prices have soared since then, reaching a record high of $111 recently. "But the refiners have been eating much of that cost increase and accepting much smaller profit margins. So even if current oil
prices retreat, U.S. oil refiners will sooner or later be forced to price gasoline based on those $100-plus barrels of oil."
That's bad news for American drivers. If gas prices catch up to oil's 70% rise since this time last year, national average prices at the pump could pass $5 per gallon and move near $6. "And what happens if oil prices keep rising -- which they inevitably will?" asks King. "Your next trip home for Easter dinner in 2009 could set you back $7-8 per gallon."
Motor fuel already costs up to $8 or so per gallon in Britain and Germany, although much of the price is fuel tax. A fill up in Europe can easily cost $100 or more. If gas were to double in the U.S. -- American fuel would still be cheap compared with the rest of the world.
According to King, "Politicians promise relief. But they really can't do a thing. Most of the world's oil is located outside of the U.S., and much of that is in places not known to be friendly with America. So if the U.S. wants to burn oil, it has to pay for it. And you cannot blame the
refiners who do not want to run their operations at a loss. So high costs for oil will eventually be felt at the pump."
King's advice for traveling this holiday weekend? "Enjoy it while you can... the days of cheap gasoline are simply over."
Byron King is a contributor to http://www.energyandoil.com, as well as the editor of two acclaimed investment advisory newsletters, Outstanding Investments and Energy & Scarcity Investor. He is a trained geologist holding advanced degrees from Harvard, the University of Pittsburgh and the U.S. Naval War College and has worked in the exploration and production
divisions of a major international oil company. He has been working, advising and analyzing the oil and energy industry for the past 30 years, and his expertise has been featured in print, radio and television outlets across the U.S.

Honestly, I'm confused as to why Acura wouldn't use their fantastic turbo 2.4 I4. Build the block and head a little stouter and 300hp/tq should be easily and safely attainable (Audi does it from less displacement).
I don't see them as a "conventional" competitor to BMW, Merc, Audi so I don't really expect to buy a booming V8 from them. Instead, I'd go to Acura expecting to get a good looking, reliable car with all the bells and whistles while still getting respectable fuel economy.
The turbo 2.4 should be capable of getting better than 30mpg in the RL.
While a lot of people criticize King, realize he's not alone in his sentiments. Simmons and Deffeyes share similar opinions. Deffeyes, BTW, is highly respected in the industry and is one of the few remaining pupil's of the legendary M. King Hubbert.
Simply put, we've reached geological limits with oil. Prices don't have anything to do with running out. We've got enough left in the ground for ~30 years at current rates. The problem is the RATE at which we can extract oil.
All fields have a depletion curve and most of the fields in production are old giants that are in decline. This is the best way I can summarize the problem:
Let's say I told you that you have $1Billion in the bank and that's all you'd ever have in you're life. Would that be enough to get by? Most people would say yes but in doing so they'd forget to ask a critical question- "How much can I withdraw daily?" If the answer is $1/day, then no, $1Billion is not enough to get by.
We might have half a trillion barrels left in the ground but the market doesn't care when the world wants 90 million bpd and producers can only put out 80 million bpd.
Lest we forget that the crude we now extract is more and more sour (heavy in sulfur and other impurities). This costs more to refine and some of that cost has to get passed on to the consumer. If anyone cares, upgrading sour crude requires the use of natural gas which is also becoming more expensive.

well one problem with that engine one in its only application it gets bad epa ratings...the rdx gets dismal epa ratings given its size and small engine...maybe with another car it would be better....i dont really get acura having a V8 they lack the cache of the competition that can sell a V8, V10, V12 despite gas prices because prestige. instead why not just start using rear wheel drive that make sense, and to distance themselves further from Honda. Acura makes sense because they are relatively low price save the overpriced big accord looking RL, large amount of standard features, reliable, and decent quality. they make alot of logical sense, now just inject so passion and performance into the logic, and you dont need a V8 to do that

Lol. Not really. It is true that Deffeyes is relatively well known (he even graduated from my department), but his type of statistical abstraction is sort of the bastard child of petroleum engineering. It is an interesting exercise but it really does not hold much water and is not taken seriously. If you want a complete picture you go to someone with a background in natural resource economics.

i am just not sure this analyst is all that accurate. The places that he mention that have higher prices have taxes on their gas and less demand for the gas due to the transportation systems in place. Demand is too high here and in China for them to be that high. The only way they would spike like that is if we ran out of oil altogether. Just so you know I am not an analyst, but it still seems a bit ridiculous.

First of all, this "expert" is a geologist, not an economist. He works for the oil industry. He is not an unbiased observer. He is basically a shill.
Secondly, he fails to mention that a year ago, the refinery industry was making record profits, an all-time high; that's why pump prices were so high. Current prices have already resulted in a reduction in demand. If demand drops and the refineries need to produce less, guess what, their profits will drop along with it.
There has been a lot of speculation in the oil markets. Today's oil market could be like the U.S. real estate market 2 years ago-sitting on an incredible bubble.

Some of the best qualified and most experienced people to talk about such things are within the petroleum industry, having said that they don't happen to be geologists- they would be petroleum, or natural resource economists.
The article on the above site cites one person in the article that one really needs to be in the industry to put into perspective- while he appears often in the sort of popular science versions of the news, he is almost universally disliked within the industry. I have heard some of the most respected people in the industry call him a "fat slob son of a bitch" with the threat that if he showed up within the vicinity that he would be removed by security. Another person at one time (this is a person with advanced degrees in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Petroleum Engineering) called him an "unprofessional imbecile". I am not going to go into it but he has a history. Apparently, however, people do like his wife- she is in the industry as well. Last I knew he was "working" at OSU (I think it was) I notice that such has changed- I remember hearing that no university would hire him to actually DO anything.

He could be right. You don't have all of the answers, Chicken Little. I don't believe it's constructive for people to start panicking and speculating. Shit happens, life goes on, eventually we get back to business as usual.
Like someone already said, if the gas price gets so high that demand slumps, then prices will go back down. At the end of the day, the oil companies want to sell oil. It only makes sense that they attempt to get the maximum possible price out of the consumer.
If we were really running out of oil, then why does the government allow NASCAR to waste fuel every weekend, driving around in circles at 200mph and spilling gas all over the asphalt in the pits? This whole thing (global warming, running out of oil) is a big hoax to spur consumer spending on new 'green' products.
It's not constructive to worry. If the uncertain future scares you, then just get yourself a gun. It doesn't matter what happens: gas shortages, food shortages, etc; if you are well armed, then you can always take what you want/need from people who have food, but no guns.

Gas Guzzler tax is crap. If I buy a porsche or mercedes that gets 24 mpg i get taxed but if I get a hummer with 12 mpg I don't! Not fair at all. I get penalized for getting twice the fuel mileage of a suv that gets no tax? If you are going to tax then tax all of them not just luxury imports.

This sort of rhetoric might make you feel better but the concepts are too vague to merit attention and, in reality, other forms of taxes already dwarf what you are proposing.
It would actually also represent another form of social injustice, not equal opportunity.

It won't happen. $8 would grind the world economy to a halt.
The corporations have to balance between gouging and pissing the public off so much the elected governments feel threatened (meaning no re-election and kickbacks).
$8.00 is 4x as much as what hydrogen costs now.
This is the final decade (maybe 15 years) of oil as fuel, so big oil needs to rake it in before they switch to hydrogen (then we'll get hosed at the hydrogen pumps). Of course, there's always the sun (which some Prius owners/researchers have proven is feasible).

SUV's don't get a gas-guzzler tax because they are expected to get less fuel economy than passenger cars. So they tax passenger cars and other types because they are generally expected to get better fuel economy, and with some not meeting that requirement or expectation they are penalized. They can range anywhere from $1000 (ex. Mercedes-Benz S550) to $5400 plus (ex. Bentley Arnage).
There is noting we can do about rising fuel cost all I can say is either we Americans trade in are beloved SUV's for more fuel efficient vehicles or we just drive less. Since I'm not willing to do the first one ill just drive less. However at the same time the cost to fill up (if I wait till the line is just at empty, which I never do) my Ford Explorer Sport Trac Limited would be a whopping $74 @ $3.29/gal on a 22.5 gallon fuel tank. So if gas does hit $5 or more I might be considering a car!

GoObama,
Ummm, the reason the US won't attack N.Korea is for several reasons.
1. They're in 2 other wars now which really doesn't matter to someone not looking for re-election (strategic air-power is enough since real-asians don't use terrorism, we value life a little bit more).
2. The S.Koreans are more likely to hinder the U.S. than they are to just stay out of it (the U.S. can launch from Japan). The status quo is just fine for S.Korean kids since it doesn't affect their ability to show off their new economy (plus their BMW's paint job might get scratched in a war anyway).
3. China its Wal-Mart dollars will jump in and suddenly all our t-shirts will cost $10 intead of $0.99. How can Americans possibly handle not having everyday low prices?
Really, the most humane thing you can do is bomb N.Korea into submission (unless they do the commi thing and hide in cities waiting for Liberals to go nuts about civilian casualties) and have the S.Koreans feed their cousins after. However, S.Korea isn't going to do somethng that stupid, the money can be better spent competing against Japan.
Do you really think its OPEC jacking up the prices right now? They're partially to blame, but OPEC output is actually higher than demand (the reason why they were going to cut production until the US did some arm twisting). You can blame all the yuppy futures traders pushing the prices up everytime it rains (those BMW's don't lease themselves).
If you want to point a finger (there's no point), point it at China/India. Instead of using greener technology, they pollute in a race to catch up to us to show what great superpowers they are. They had a chance to start guilt free, but they screwed up.
About Obama,
If the college and stupidity vote outnumbers Clinton's, you can bet China/Russia/Europe will slap Obama around like a bitch. How much do you think oil will be when Iraq's output is surprisingly diverted to China?
Politics and world affairs can't always viewed through rose coloured lenses like the candidate of HYPE would have you believe.

GoObama,
My parents know very well what communist tactics are. They hide amongst civilians and wait for the US bombs then let the media go wild about how America is so bad and the world would be a much better place if swell guys like Russia and China ran the show.
Usually know-nothing arts students at Universities lap it all up, that's why the Russians, now the Chinese, target them. Go look up the term "useful idiots".
These same retards never care whether genocide is occurring unless some hollywood jackass decides to make it fashionable. Why aren't the arts students protesting about Darfur and China's support of Sudan? It's much easier to criticize the gov't that you know isn't allowed to shoot you.
Here's a quote for you to think about. Your enemies are banking on it.
"This nation can never be conquered from without. If it is ever to fall it will be from within."
President Abraham Lincoln
"Our flag is red, white and blue, but our nation is a rainbow - red, yellow, brown, black and white - and we're all precious in God's sight."

Why do protestors not see Darfur as equal enough to protest for unless the US causes civilian casualties?

Huu,
"'This nation can never be conquered from without. If it is ever to fall it will be from within.'
President Abraham Lincoln"
Just as a note, that statement actually precedes Lincoln by hundreds of years. The Baron de Montesquieu, one of the ideological co-founders of the Constitution, stated the same in The Spirit of the Laws. Large Republics, he stated, are destroyed from within not by foreign conquerors.
I agree incdientally, that there are a lot of people in colleges professors included who I would clasify as "false intellectuals". I came to this realization years ago after visiting some friends at CU- Boulder.

I like him but he needs more time and experience. If he plays his cards right he could be in office for 16 years. That is if he runs two terms as Vice and Hillary wins both times. I'm sure a few years in state politics and living in Indonesia for a couple years when he was a kid more than qualify him on foreign policy, economics etc.
McCain is a vetaran, was a POW for 5 years, has over 20years in the Senate and has served on numberous committees and he has life experience (there's a reason why there's a minimum age to be President). People who've seen war generally want to avoid it, unless they know its necessary. I think he's a little bit more qualified even if he isn't the flavour of the month.
cdoke,
I just found that on a speech transcript. I would've preferred to use "The future does not belong to the fainthearted, it belongs to the brave" but I know most ppl don't consider Reagan an intellectual. There are too many fainthearted souls in the West now.
Williston/Bakken Shales covering Montana, Dakotas, Sask and Manitobla. Est. 270-500 billion barrels of oil. I saw the guy who came up with this theory on Discovery Channel (Oil in the Canadian shield) several years ago. This would explain all the talk about Saskatchewan being the next oil patch in Canada.

GoObama08,
I had no idea that Obama was a car enthusiast. Maybe it would be more effective for you to say that Hillary would raise taxes on gas to bring the price to $16 per gallon?
This is a free country and I believe in free speech, but you my friend are a tool. You might find more entrainment at USAToday.

This Oil 'EXPERT' is a shill for a major Oil company and is-under orders from his corporate bosses- setting the stage for all the oil companies to start a long gouge-era, that actually DOES run the price of gas up to $8/gallon. This despite the fact that all the Oil companies have already made BANNER profits this year- $40 Billion for Exxon, $32 Billion for Chevron, $18 Billion for Valero- almost $100 billion combined.
If a mass media examination of their business practices is done- it'll turn up the GORGING on Public money that this represents. Unfortunately, COngress sits in their pockets, and so this gorging will continue. I say we unit and DEMAND a PUBLIC- OPEN MEDIA examination of this BASTARD Business model- and bastard SHills like this OIL 'EXPERT'.

Even though GoObama08 is a joke as far as his automotive information goes, I must admit that he is correct in the fact that we need a democrat in office come Jan. 20, 2009. All the stuff he says about Bush and Cheney is true.

bmwman, obama,
Name one thing North America doesn't have?
Resources, food, fresh water, a large population, innovation, free speech, human rights, tolerance.
In a perfect world, we wouldn't even need to talk to anyone else.
Europe's been riding our coattails for 50+ years now. They hate America because Republicans/Conservatives can't be manipulated like Democrats/Liberals. Look up "Noshir S. Gowadia" and see how other countries that Obama just loves are seeking to harm us (involves B-2 Spirit if anyone is familiar).
Blame speculators on the economic woes. Tech bubble, real estate bubble, soon resources bubble. The US needs a bad recession or depression to bring the "contenders" to their knees. Economics nowadays isn't about real money, it's about influence and you can't have influence without oil and innovation.
In case anyone cares, Google's stock I believe has dropped $200 since Nov, people probably realizing more free services doesn't make you money. See what effect hype has (just like China and India).
Consider yourselves lucky that nobody has the ability or resources to do any large scale fighting anywhere (thanks to oil being controlled a democracy).
People hate us, either because they can't harm us, or they're envious (why do you think N.A. is the destination of choice for immigrants).
