Another Hyundai Genesis coupe for SEMA
The third and final tuning company chosen to use the Hyundai Genesis Coupe as their canvas at the upcoming SEMA show may just unveil the most outrageous Genesis Coupe yet, if the pictures are anything to go by.

Hyundai has given their Genesis Coupe to 'Street Concepts', long-time Hyundai tuners, who have decided to give the entire car a camouflage paintjob with red-tinted headlights at the front.

yea, numbers look nice on paper dont they? wait till we get some long term reliability numbers and get to test drive one and realize its a korean interior that for an extra 5-6k you could have something you actually look forward to getting into, rather than something you got a steal on. i guess thats just me though, id rather shell out the extra bucks for a car built by a company who isnt just now venturing into the sports car world. but hey, for what it is and for what it costs, im sure it offers considerable thrills.

bmwdrvr, I am afraid you will have to ellaborate.

Not sure if I agree or disagree.

My thoughts are the same as Kaner.

We don't know what the durability of this car is and I am not sure if (or, if not) the designer sneezed when he got towards the rear-3/4 of the car.

Other than that, it sure seems to be a value. I am just not sure whether I would be able to be happy of the compromise I would make by purchasing a cut-rate car like this, regardless of how fast it is. I prefer quality over quantity.

You know.. the whole 10/100k mile warranty thing means they're going to stand by the product. Indeed, in the years before Hyundai's haven't been anything great, not bad, but not great, but do you think a car company that creates unreliable shi**y cars would offer a warranty that long? They're willing to stand by their product, and the Genesis is a fine product. I've been in a few of them, and while there's still some minor things [no cover in the trunk for the speakers], the Genesis interior is nothing to turn away from. It's nicely laid out, has excellent fit and finish, and looks good.

So, yeah, numbers look good on paper, especially when the paper is in the form of a window sticker in a car packed full of goodies that performs well, has a great warranty, and has a great price.

That's all.

Hyundai's Reliability Rankings Now Tie Honda's
By Earle Eldridge, USA TODAY

South Korean brand Hyundai — much maligned in the past for quality problems — ranks No. 2, along with perennial leader Honda, in the newest Consumer Reports magazine reliability ratings.

Toyota continues as the top brand for reliability in the ranking, based on 2002 models, in Consumer Reports' annual auto issue, out today. The auto issue, considered a bible for car shoppers, has reviews, buying tips, reliability scores, safety ratings and industry trends compiled by the magazine's auto test staff. Reliability ratings are based on surveys of 460,000 owners of vehicles up to 5 years old. They were asked about problems in 14 areas.

The brand's ranking is based on complaints about 2002 models, which found 11 problems per 100 vehicles for Hyundai. Last year, the magazine's survey found Hyundai had 24 problems per 100 vehicles, ranking it 12th out of 20 brands.

David Champion, director of auto testing for Consumer Reports, says 10 years ago Hyundai ranked at the bottom of the ratings. "The question will be as these models age, how their reliability will be in comparison to other manufacturers." CR's Reliability Ratings

J.D. Power and Associates, a marketing and research firm, said its annual Initial Quality Survey, which looks at problems in the first 90 days of ownership, put Hyundai's 2002 vehicles below the industry average. "I am a little surprised that they rank them near the top next to Honda," says Brian Walters, Power's director of product research. "But I am not surprised to hear that Hyundai products are getting better."

Hyundai had such quality problems in the past that it began offering 10-year warranties to help reassure buyers. Chuck Halper, vice president of service for Hyundai Motor America, says the automaker's warranty costs have fallen more than 50% on some models since 1998.

J.D. POWER SURVEY: Hyundai Ranks As #1 Non-Premium Brand

Maybe Hyundai Motor Co. drivers don't need that 10-year, 100,000-mile warranty after all.

The South Korean automaker known for its value pricing -- all its vehicles sell for less than $29,000 -- delivered a jaw-dropping performance in J.D. Power and Associates' annual survey on new-vehicle quality, which was released Wednesday.

Hyundai was the No. 1 non-premium brand in the United States, edging past Toyota, the Japanese brand whose rock-solid quality reputation has been shaking Detroit's dominance in the nation's auto market for years.

Overall, Hyundai was No. 3 in this year's report, behind No. 1 Porsche and No. 2 Lexus, Toyota's luxury brand, and right ahead of Toyota. Last year, Hyundai was No. 11, so the leap made Hyundai the third-most improved nameplate this year.

"We're very proud and very excited," said Don Dees, vice president of service for Hyundai Motor America, the subsidiary of Hyundai that sells and distributes new cars and trucks in the United States. "Our objective is to move up and become No. 1 in everything we do."

Even Toyota Motor Corp., whose products topped 11 of the 19 categories, acknowledged the growing pressure from Hyundai. New Hyundai drivers reported 102 problems per 100 vehicles, compared with the 106 problems reported by new Toyota brand owners.

"There's no question that Hyundai is coming on strong and doing a tremendous job," Jim Lentz, Toyota group vice president and general manager, said in a conference call with journalists. "They are going to become a bigger and bigger player in the marketplace."

Quality is always a top concern for new car and truck buyers. So the top-notch quality performance likely will give a boost to Hyundai sales, which are already up 4.5% this year, and help the automaker achieve its growth targets.

Hyundai -- which has a North American headquarters in Fountain Valley, Calif., a new $1.1-billion plant in Alabama and an engineering and technology center in Superior Township -- is aiming for 500,000 U.S. sales this year and 1 million annual sales by 2010.

The company will certainly have a lot of selling points from this year's J.D. Power report:

Five of the seven 2006 models that Hyundai sold ranked in the top three for their category.

auto001, keep dreaming of the 300 HP RWD coupe to be in the mid 20's more like mid 30's to upper 40's, the way our economy is. If it was mid 20's all you'd get would be a steering wheel and two seats.

"Pricing for the new hotness from Hyundai is very reasonable for the Korean market with a base price of 25,360,000 WON (about U.S. $23,000). Stepping up to the "Stylish Pack" (seriously?) nets you 19-inch rims, a limited slip diff and optional Brembo's for 26,920,000 WON (U.S. $24,500). Well worth it in our estimation. A loaded 3.8-liter V6 Genesis Coupe will go for 33,150,000 WON (U.S. $30,100), which buys you over 300-horsepower and a full leather interior."

Trust me it will be alot cheaper in US.
By the way, Genesis sedan cost up to $75K in Korea.

Is all that tuner stuff going to last as long as the warranty?

It's easy to be a hyundai hater. Can't wait to see what real live owners have to say about genesis reliablity.

Although I don't like the tuned car in the picture above, I'm excited overall about the Genesis Coupe coming out next spring. If the price is right and the reviews are good, then I just might purchase one. Of course, I wouldn't buy the first-generation one--I would wait until it's been in the market for at least 2-3 years and Hyundai gives the engine the direct-injection technology.
