Anti-theft Immobilizers To Become Mandatory on New Cars, September 1st
Effective September 1, 2007 Transport Canada will make it mandatory for all new passenger cars and light-duty trucks to be equipped with anti-theft electronic immobilizers. Immobilizers arm when the vehicle is turned off, to prevent unauthorized starting.

Audi, DaimlerChrysler, Ford, General Motors, Hyundai, Jaguar, Land Rover, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, Saab, Subaru, Volkswagen and Volvo have recently announced their plans to equip 2008 model-year vehicles in Canada with immobilizers meeting the requirements of the Canadian standards, according to the Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC).

Why make owners pay? Because insurance companies are the lowest scum of the earth. Their purpose is to help us, as it would seem in this attempt to keep thieves from stealing cars, although they just dont want to pay for the value of your stolen car.

Plus, as you mentioned, the automaker profits on it.

Since its a requirement for all vehicles, it may not affect your insurance because all new cars have it. For instance - although the 2007 model yr may not have the immobalizer, the extra cost of insuring a 2008 will be offset by the discount from the immobilizer, making no difference in the first year of ownership.

I hate my immobilizer, new keys set me back 150 bucks, but if it makes my insurance lower, I'm all for it.
