What does it take to be a classic?

How about a design that spawns a generation of cars, or even creates a new class all unto itself? Some true classics come to mind over the years: The BMW 2002 launched the brand to stardom, or the Volkswagen Rabbit GTI that spawned a whole generation of hot hatch cars that still proliferate to this day.

How about the original Mazda Miata, that took the small two seat convertible to the masses with reliability and style. If you go back a bit further you see the Datsun 240Z which still lives on as the Nissan 370Z. Even Toyota has a few with the 2000GT and the Turbo Supra.

These are the cars that make you stop and look when you see them on the street. When was the last time you saw an original Lotus Esprit, or even a super clean 70’s vintage RX7? To the knowledgeable enthusiast these cars simply stand out in the crowd and quietly command the attention of those who know truly how monumental they are. We aren’t talking of a Pebble Beach Edition here, we are talking about a pivotal element in the evolution of the automobile.

But you know if I look now, I can still see the stalwarts of a generation gone by with the Miata and 370Z carrying on the torch. But I also see very few successors in the pipeline, everybody is going generic, plain forgettable is in and many of you don’t care. After all can you really remember what a 2001 Corolla looks like? So tell me I am wrong, look out there and tell me what the future classics are going to be. And let’s be specific, I only want to hear about cars released in the last few years, lets gives 2005 as a starting point, for our modern day classics.

What will you buy 20 years from now and tell your child this was the coolest car of the time, and that you begged, borrowed, and saved to have it in your garage.

I agree, S2000 is a phenomenal car, holds the record for most HP/L. To me, classic doesn't always have to do with looks or has to be good, it's about how memorable or what kind of impact it had on us. Here is my list of good and bad.

92 Honda Civic coupe and hatchback - The Mustang of the import scene. Wihtout it, we wouldn't have Ricers and Haters.

3rd gen Acura Integra(especially the Type-R) - The camaro of the import scene.

Original Acura Legend coupe- Most expensive japanese car ever sold in the US.

92 Toyota Camry - raised the standards in smoothness and refinement for all mainstaream cars.

2002 Toyota Corolla - did to econo class what camry did to the full size class.

Pruis - Nuff said

Mini - a BMW that can actually handle.

GT-R - Greatest all around high performance vehicle ever built in the history of mankind.

Original Scion Xb - Looks Looks looks!

IS-F - So ugly it becomes a classic.

EVO 8/9/X- Fastest point to point and best handling 4dr sedan ever built.

Original Dodge Neon - HI!

Original saturns - Go-kart resistant side panels

Pontiac GTO(The rebadge aussie import) - So bland, Cavaliers went up in value.

Original LS400 - Nuff said.

NSX - Nuff said.

RX-7/8(all gen) - Most unreliable japanese car ever built. But it's not all Mazda's fault, it's got a heart of a wankel.

Ford F-150, Taurus and Explorer - Three of the crappiest vehicles ever built that out sold everyone else year after year until the GOP tanked the economy.

I can't believe the 8 Series is showing up so much. Obviously the authors haven't driven It. I have. in every iteration. The 8er was the world most expensive Camaro, huge on the outside and teeny on the inside. The 850CSI was the best of the lot, the 8er was a decent GT car, but everywhere else it was mediocre at best. The car was heavy, didn't really handle at a level it should have and was far less than reliable, not to mention it really didn’t look like a BMW and was ghastly expensive. The truly God-awful 840i was a joke, SLOW with disappointing handling and SLOW, I remember after my first drive of this Bavarian Edsel, I commented “wow, you really need the V12”, how many cars can you say that about.

These are just cars I think will be considered collectibles 15-20 years from now, off the otp of my head. btw, I did not include any Lambos, Porsches, Ferraris or Bugattis because they will all be collectibles regardless:

Dodge Magnum SRT8 (pretty badass wagon and only made for 4yrs?)

Well Z8 do not belong to that list, Gogle the problems of that car and you'll understand why you do not see that car on the streets. It was so pourly designed that the front suspension will be spread as a horny hooker and the rear suspension trend to damage the weak chasis. Is the worst BMW of all times

None. Except for high value sports cars (Viper, GT40, Ferrari's, ZR1, etc) the design of this generation of cars are pretty pathetic.

The most original design to come along in 10 years is the xB and its a friggin' BOX! Everything else is highly derivative or worse, an outright copy of a past classic (new Mustang, Challenger, Camaro, Mini).

I don't see how remakes of past "Classics" can be called classics again. That includes the 370Z, Porsche 911, all new muscle cars, the new mini, etc. I think we have to look at cars that where born in that new era and that will later be a reference to this era. Although I'm not a fan, the Prius is a classic, the MB CLS is another one and even the Hummer on that list.

We're not there yet guys. We are almost there but we have to get rid of most of the retro cars.

A Nice looking a little Chinese Subcompact with a price tag of $11,000 and 82 MPG with a 120 HP motor at an inevitable future time when gas is $7.50 a gallon can be a classic.

Newer (old is new again, birth of new segments or affordable fun).
Honda S2000, Ford Mustang, Chevy Camaro, Toyota Prius, Nissan 350Z, Honda Civic Si, Lexus RX300 (new segment and still nothing looks like it).

Older (instant name and performance recognition with designs that are still timeless)

I think the S2000, G35 Coupe, 350Z, and SL500 are classics...

I think in the future, the GT-R, R8, FJ Cruiser, and Subaru STi will become highly sought after collector's cars (in their stock version).

I dont think you can really read Hyundaismoke, i mean were talking classics, not retarded halfbreeds that "in theory" people will want in the future because of their fuel economy.

Modern day classics will follow the exact same concept as the classic cars today. Its three basic categories: The cars you loved as a child; the cars you lusted after as a child; and the cars you actually drove as a child. Child would be that 10-25 age group.

Look at the classics people want today. Many of them were routine grocery mobiles the neighbor drove. Cars like the challengers, magnums, mustangs, etc are popular now because that is what kind of car my father would have grown up wanting. They are popular now because the originals are great to look at and remember, but are horrible to drive.

I personally think that cars like the M5 will be popular someday (and i hate BMW's) but it fills out the equation.

I guess if i had to make a list it would include:

M Sedans
Porsche Boxster/Cayman S
Jaguar XK (current body)
03 Audi RS6 (already a sought after car here in the states)
CLS Mercedes
Ford Lightning Pickup

I cant beleive no one has said it but the Delorean will totally be a new classic.

Anyway my two cents.

Yep, and the ford T was even slower than a Hyundai(crap)car.
This did not prevent the Ford T to make history, for other reasons than stupid 0-60 times. Only dumb people are judging cars solely on the 0-60 sprint time, Especially whe they say that a car that goes from 0 to 60 in half a second slower than an other is a MUCH slower car.

Since the current line-up of M cars is the last line-up to ever have naturally aspirated engines, I think I should mention both the:

- BMW E92 M3
- BMW E60 M5

Since it's their 1st try at the game, I think the IS-F will also be remembered.. so here:

- Lexus IS-F

Audi's 1st supercar.. and it's hot.. how can anyone not mention that one in the future?

- Audi R8

Mercedes changed the game with the CLS.. the 1st 4 door coupe as Merc likes to call it.. so it deserves to be added to the list.. Although I'm not a fan:

- Mercedes CLS

Aston Martin.. just comes out of nowhere with the DB9 and makes the most beautiful cars list in no time.. it has to be mentioned:

- Aston Martin DB9

Maserati.. they have the best looking car out there imo.. a car anyone would think is super sexy.. definitely worth mentioning:

- Maserati Gran Turismo

Lamborghini.. I can't think of anyone who would remember the Reventon..

- Lamborghini Reventon

Other cars worth mentioning:

- Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8
- Chrysler 300C
- Bentley Continental GT
- Range Rover
- Bugatti Veyron

IS300, E46 M3 (last of the great Inline 6's-plus that shape is soo right, that is the best looking sports coupe not the G35. The E90/92 M3-first M3 with a V8.

MSP6, Im only pointing out how much Automotive technology has changed. Im not a chick, Im a dude who keeps saying that Im a chick, damm it!!!

Speaking about Technology, the Model T with its caveman tech got 25-30 MPG. Thats about the average of cars today.

What in the FU-K happend in 100 years, dude? The Average car of today should be getting 1000 MPG at the rate of how other technologies have grown. I Dont see AT&T still playing around with 5 digit phone numbers. Whats so wrong with the car, that almost every other form tech has leaped frogged it?

All Trains today are Hybrids that get the equivalent of 400 MPG or more per ton of weight for example. Why not the car?

Thats right its the American people like yourselves who should be ashamed at harking back at these wasteful classics. Instead of looking forward to the future. You should see these old cars as the devil, as something to put some fire under our asses to make better cars and not repeat the automotive mistakes of the past.

This is what I think about:

1. I just think about all of that sheetmetal wasted.

2. All of the people who have lost their jobs, and had to take a lesser job, had to sell dope, and to sell their puss- to feel the kids.

3. All of the Racial and Class tensions that Automotive, Coal, and Steel corporations fermented that we are still trying to repair today.

4. All of the people to died in African countires like the Democratic Republic of Congo for Cotaine-a mineral that keeps microchips from burning up especially in high heat environments like engines.

5. All of the people who have been oppressed in the Middle East and West Africa for oil we just chug into our wasteful appliances we call automobiles.

6. All of the communities that have been utterly destroyed i.e. Detroit, Dayton, Gary, Pittsburgh, Cleveland, etc.... over Automotive outsourcing.

That's what these old "classics" we celebrate did to the World.

Yet, we have the nerve to say we are the greatest country in the world. No wonder why everybody hates us, becuase in order to have the lifestyle we have billions of other people who are considered the bottom of the barrel here and at home have to suffer. Not God Bless America, God Will FU-K America up. You'll see when the sh-t really hits the the fan.

The White Christian Conservatives who talk boastfully and pridefully (a Sin by the way) about how America is so great will get a rude awakening when Jesus comes back. If America the way it is now is evil in which it is evil, should be destroyed by God then I will help God destroy the country the way it is now and make anew.
