Are You Considering Cars You Normally Wouldn't Have, Due To The Pain At The Pump?
According to the latest Kelley Blue Book Marketing Research study, in-market new-vehicle shoppers plan to adjust their shopping habits due to high gas prices, spending less money on themselves so they can still give to others during this holiday season.

The December 2007 results reveal that 44 percent of in-market new-vehicle shoppers are looking at cars they normally would not have considered due to the pain at the pump. An example of this is a notable shift in vehicle segment consideration from just two months ago, with increased interest in less expensive and more fuel-efficient transportation including crossovers, sedans and hatchbacks, and declines in SUV interest.

With a gallon of unleaded gasoline currently hovering at more than $3 in most parts of the country, 67 percent of those in the market for a new vehicle indicate they will not spend less on holiday gifts this year due to the rising cost of gas. However, more than 40 percent of consumers do say they are eating out less often and nearly 50 percent of consumers say they are doing less shopping of non-essential retail items such as clothes and shoes; further examples of consumers cutting back on self-spending. According to new-car shoppers, the largest shift in personal spending includes delaying the purchase of a new home, which more than doubled from October to December.

"While gas prices are clearly influencing the way consumers plan to spend money on themselves, such as going out to eat and delaying the purchase of a new home, it appears most people will not let the price of gas affect their holiday spirit and giving to others," said Jack R. Nerad, executive editorial director and executive market analyst for Kelley Blue Book and kbb.com. "Based on our monthly study, shoppers are willing to sacrifice in order to still give to others, and it even extends to their next new-vehicle purchase. We are seeing more and more new-vehicle shoppers looking at smaller and more fuel-efficient cars than in the past. "

When asked how gas prices have affected which vehicles they are considering, more than half of consumers say they would seriously consider a vehicle with higher fuel efficiency if gas prices were to increase as little as 50 cents per gallon. Among those looking to buy a new hybrid vehicle, shoppers say they are most interested in the Toyota Camry hybrid and the Honda Civic hybrid.

"Determining how gas prices affect consumer shopping provides tremendous insight into shifts in the economy, and tracking their opinions of alternative fuel solutions sheds light on the possible adoption and acceptance rates of alternate fuel systems in the future," said Rick Wainschel, vice president of marketing research and brand communications for Kelley Blue Book. "Timely, in-market vehicle shopper feedback can provide invaluable information to automotive manufacturers and marketers, allowing them to tailor their messages and strategies more toward what car shoppers actually think and how they plan to spend their money."

The latest Kelley Blue Book Marketing Research study was conducted on Kelley Blue Book's kbb.com among in-market new-vehicle shoppers during the first week of December 2007.

I recently bought a Lexus IS250.
Real world gas mileage:
23.5 mpg city
34.3 mpg highway (72 mph)
The car has good pep, not explosive acceleration like the IS350 and a lot of fun to drive also!

But was it something you wouldn't have considered before?

Me to..

I just purchase a 2008 Lexus IS250, because of the gas. I normally average 23.8mpg combined (Same has the 2007 4-cylinder Camry.

I had would've never put this car on my shopping list in the past. I was more considering the Audi A6, Infiniti M35, Infiniti G35, BMW 3-series, Acura TL, Mercedes C-class....
Went to the fuel ecomomy.gov website, put in the calculations in....CHANGE MY MIND!!!

The Lexus IS250 has be best gas milege in it's class!
You cannot get any luxury car for that price with that greatest gas mileage. It outbeats gas in the: Acura TL, BMW 3 Series, Mercedes C-Class, Audi A4, Infiniti G35.

And with the Lexus IS250 having a Gonvernor's Top speed of 140mph, it's the fastest car in it's class, outbeats all of them in TOP speed, but it gets the greatest gas mileage.....

bmw995: "34.3 mpg highway (72 mph)"

AMAZING! it seems what toyota learned building the Prius, they applied to making OTHER models fuel efficient too.

i myself have gotten the following with an '03 Corolla 1.8 automatic.

highway: 31 - 35 mpg (depending on highest sustained speed)

urban and EVERYDAY: 40.0 mpg (touching 70 mph only on short hwy sections. otherwise, staying between 1800 - 2300 rpm, constantly working toward 4th/OD at 45-50 mph)

note the diff bet'n urban and hwy. this Corolla thinks it's a Prius!

We're in the market right now for a small/economical vehicle.

Right now our most fuel efficient E46 M3, and I refuse to use it as a daily driver.

I'm really leaning towards something in the small hatch category, but it needs to have a bit of 'pep' and lots of interior versatility.

'pep' is readily available with just about ANY car with a simple downshift or two.

with many engines now having VVT of some sort, not only do you get the instant torque multiplication of a lower gear set, but the 'boost' from a hotter cam.

my 1.8 toyota is rated at a mere 128 hp. i rarely find it necessary to EVER use more than 60 - 80% of the herd. YET, i generally get from any given pt A to pt B FASTER THAN 99% of competing traffic.

the trick is NOT blinding acceleration (how LONG is that ever sustained?) but GENTLY building up to higher CRUISING speeds (i'm generally 10 - 20 over the limit), and driving SMART (timing lights, gaps, etc.)

(i rarely EVER downshift because i NEED TO, but just to now and then hear the music of the hotter cam kicking in.)

No. The cost of gas does not influence my decision. I am going to buy a car I am going to drive. If a minvan got 1000 miles to the gallon, I would not buy it because it is a minivan!!! I would only consider going to diesel. Hybrid cars are for pussies!

No wouldn't call for 'no more supercars', but...

I do find it quite irresponsible of manufacturers to continue these inane horse-power wars (especially Mercedes with their ridiculous notion of placing a 6.3 liter engine in everything they make - The Compact C63's 12mpg city is atrocious!) with little thought to 'intelligent engineering' that would allow an enthusiastic driving experience coupled with much greater fuel efficiency.

BMW, taking what most Japanese manufacturers learned some 25 to 30 years ago, is making strides by utilizing forced induction to very good effct.

Other premium automakers will undoubtedly follow suit.

just a few hours ago, in interviewee on NPR mentioned what HUGE progress has been made in auto technology in just the past 10-15 years.

he also pointed out, that except in the case of some japanese companies, all the tech was applied in a HORSEPOWER race. if it had been applied to fuel efficiency instead, the prius would NOT be unique.

No. Overall, its not an impact...yet. At $5 /gallon, its going to be irritating.

Yep. I bought a Q7 3.6 instead of a 4.2. Most magazines give the 4.2 about 13mpg, but generally we get 18.9 on our 3.6. The worst has been 16.5 and the best was 23.1 on vacation to VA beach. The 4.2 is more powerfully, but it's still a pig at 7.1 sec and the 3.6 is 7.9-8.1 secs. My wife drives it 70% of the time, I wouldn't want to burden her with a 13mpg SUV. But I love the the Q7 still.

People need to get one thing in their mind: Hybrids does not mean the end of Supercars or Performance cars. And what I mean by that is, Supercars and Performance cars CAN be made of hybrid technology! It is still evolving.

I cant stand people making decisions for me let me make my own if the polar caps melt and northern united states turns into a hugh swiming pool, so be it. It will create jobs for more life guards and atlantis type construction workers lol.

it's due to idiots like you, that there are people who WISH GAS WERE $10 - 15 a gallon.

you make me want to JOIN their ranks.

Nope. I am still going to be trying gas guzzlers like the Audi S8, BMW M5, Jaguar XF SV8, Audi S5, BMW M3, etc...

But thankfully, there are companies that offer performance AND fuel efficiency in their vehicles. Cars like the BMW 335xi, upcoming Audi A4 3.0TDI, Lexus GS450h, Porsche C4S (yes, it does get good mileage!) and others give me everything in undeniably stylish, perfectly built packages. I may not be buying any of those four (the most likely are the 335xi and C4S), but I'm just glad they're there. It signifies a trend towards efficiency (low weight, good power, good mileage) rather than massive engines strapped on to tanks (Audi S8, LOL--I love it but it's true).

I just happen to like cars which are reasonable with gasoline consumption.
There are many factors which determine a car choice and gasoline is one of many issues and in some cases it may sway someone's decision .
However I do see a lot of gas guzzlers on the road and my guess is that if a person's heart is set on that vehicle --he may overlook the negative. Perhaps "love is blind" ought to be on the MSRP ?

As long as the vehicle entertains me and doesn't get 10mpg, I'll consider it.
