Toyota Motor Corp.

plans to supply BMW AG with hybrid drivetrain systems and hydrogen fuel cell technology, as the two partners deepen a green car development tie up they forged last December, media reports say.

Under the plan, Toyota would achieve greater economies of scale for its gasoline-electric hybrid systems and win a trophy customer in the form of a German luxury carmaker.

Wasn't BMW using the same BORGWARNER trasmissions as GM back in early 80s and 90s? Now they are outsourcing engines? I guess recalls will increase using TOYOTA engines. LoL!

USNA is almost right. BMW was using a 5 speed auto that was from GM for years (although GM didn't use it any vehicles at the time). They were also using a 6 speed auto as a base transmission for the 328 a few years go but I am unsure if they are using that now.

BMW also previously worked with a GM & Chrysler collaborative on the RWD hybrid system that the 2 US counterparts were using on their fullsize truck based hybrids. They may have just been getting the rights to use the patents on their vehicles but I don't think they are using this system on any of their current lineup.

No, they used the bullet proof ZF 4HP-22 and 4HP-22EH transmissions up until mid 90's where they used the GM 4L60 (which sucked by the way) and the 5 speed GM transmission introduced in the mid 90's 740 and 750.

This is a very welcome news for the consumers, for those whoever bought either brand will get the best of both worlds. However, my suspicion tells me that their partnership is much more extensive than this announcement. Look at the newly introduced Lexus GS - it just drives like a Bimmer with the Lexus sheet metal. Seriously.

...Well truth be told, It's Toyota's patent and they can sell their residual product to whom ever is smart enough to give in....If you know u cant beat'em join'em. BMW can handle it, but the BMW enthusiast are floored right now. Get over it!! Who sells the most vehicles? Their can only be one #1 folks.

If you want a hybrid then you probably don't care who builds it as long as its the best one available.
If you want a 100% BMW engine, get a gas or diesel.

I guess you won't have to worry about unintended acceleration since the Germans already have brake override.
