Audi 2009 A4 vs. 2008 A4, A Review to clear up a much needed question, Whats new!?
So the day that most audi enthusiasts have been marking their calendar for, The official press release of the Next Generation Audi A4, was today. Although Still a little unclear as to why Audi.com has not posted any information on this, The auto-blog community and forum sites, have been flooded with responses from entusiasts, and competitive auto-industry rivals.Today Audi has stole the show from any other car maker, but seems to have some people asking what exactly makes this different from the last B7 A4.

Well the answers are definately Clear. Starting from the newly enhanced body stance and length and vibrance of the stunning new A4's Front Bumper and Slighty Reduced Grill. Which adds room for the new lower trapezodial trim. To the new base line of engines and transmission variants, ranging from the 143 HP 2.0TDi to the Slight increased 3.2 FSI. The Newly bumped FSI has increased its Displacement Size from 3195 cc to 3197 cc giving the V6 a 10 HP boost. The new A4 will ride with a more driver-attention-grabbing-feel because of the elongated wheelbase at 110 inches, and a 185 inch Body. The 2009 Riding 6 inches longer at the wheelbase, and 5 inches longer than the current 2008 A4. Which allowed for a 6 inch movement of the axle giving it a more precise driveline. The Chasis and Shell of the new audi are integraded with higher quality metals which were used to save wieght, and have resulted in a safer drive and lowered the drag-coefficient from cd = 0.31, to cd = 0.27.

All in all the new A4 has remained true to its quattro form, not sticking to the current trend of a total redesign of models, and still exudes that sense of Always lead never follow with this 2009 Audi A4.

Audi 2009 A4 vs. 2008 A4, A Review to clear up a much needed question, Whats new!?

185 inch body? That's a lot of overhang for a sports car - 6'3" total. Is this a typo?

The 110.5 wheel base is about 3 inches longer than the 3 series and C class.

Nice write up. Basically everything in the chassis is new (the V6 is upgraded) It is however styled to look similar to the current B7 A4.

btw

It looks a lot like the A6 from the front and a bit like the current A4 from the rear 3/4 view.

The .27 cd is an amazing figure.

I don't care. I want the sporty look and a comfy little sedan with reasonably good handling. The only complaint I have about Audi is that it still installs inherently-out-of-balance 90-degree V-6 engines. If they can't come up with an in-line six like BMW or an H-6 like Subaru then at least they should use VW's narrow-angle V-6 which is almost as smooth as an in-line six.

I still think it looks more like a mid-cycle refresh than an actual next gen car. At least when you compare the outgoing body to the previous.

The exact same thing was said about the previous one, and the one before that.

Audi always takes a while to evolve design-wise. I can see why many people find them boring now.

It is call evolution not revolution. Once you get it right just refine each year. Just look at the 911, constant evolution. You can look at 20 year old one and recognize it instantly.

Agent 009 - just look at the Jaguar XJ, a much better vehicle than its predecessors but a sales disaster because the under-the-skin changes are much greater than the design changes, but the XJ does not project itself as a modern vehicle. Result in the US market - boredom. Jaguar gave its market to Mercedes with the CLS.

Who will take Audi's market given that the new A4 is so uninspired and almost regressive? My money is again on Mercedes with the new stylish C Class . . . and that's from a bona fide Merc Basher!

Nice front but boring back. Audi got the same problem as BMW with their 3 series sedan, the backend/ligths does not live up to the sporty/nice frontend. Boring car, and inside i find it pretty confusing with all these buttons placed low around the gearleaver.

Eh. I think the 3 Series's rear end is far less flattering than the new A4's. In fact, I disagree completely. I feel that the B8 A4 looks aggressive, from any angle.

It doesnt have to be a new radical design for it to be "next gen". The shooting horse concept or the steppenwolf were "next gen" but are now outdesigned by some current Audi's ie Q7 TDI. A5. This is Audi's new version of the B7 with not just a newer bodyline, but improved technology and creature comforts. Things you can not find in a current A4. If thats not improving the generation (next generation) i dont know what is.

The new A4 looks a lot nicer than the A5. Designer seems more confident about the move and lots of formal issues in A5 design are resolved now in new A4.

Increasing wheelbase is definitely a positive move. Although still not as spacious as G35 or as (I assumed based on AUDI history) balanced in terms of weight distribution, this car in fact has got me interested in AUDI for the first time.

SO when is RWD coming? Not everybody live in snowbelt, and the earth is getting warmer, right?

If it ever does come in RWD form then I want a Torsen LSD as optional equipment for winter traction. Better still if LSD is standard. Right now the 2008 Cadillac CTS is on my shopping list because I can get it with RWD and LSD.

If you look closely at the interior you will notice a button that says "Comfort Auto Dynamic". This could be the magnetic ride system like in the TT.

However I do think the stock A4 front bumper looks too much like the S-line. There is almost no difference.

Well I like it, but no more than I do the 3er or C-class. Guaranteed in 4 years it'll look old, if they had made it look a little more like the A5, it would have been way more interesting & possibly the best looking car in this class.

The interior however is a class leader, but unfortunately it lacks it's own personality as it closely resembles the one in the A5, A6, & Q7. In the end though I’d take a 3.2 A4 over a 328i easily, & an S4 over the 335i easily, in my eyes they’re just more ‘manly’ looking cars than the 3-series.

What I’d really consider though if I was shopping in this class would be the Caddy CTS, a little reserved on the power but a top looker inside & out.

I find the A4/A5 more attractive than the 3 Series lineup, by a long shot. I didn't think they'd be able to take down the beautiful 335i coupe, but they have. The E90 isn't hard to beat design-wise, though.

As for the C-Class... I'm unimpressed. It's a big departure from the last-gen design, but that doesn't mean it's interesting. To me, it looks like a Chinese-built mini S-Class ripoff.

PLEASE stop talking about "if this were a Japense car." I'm sick of it. I am an equal opportunities type of person, and will accept any attractive car. The new CTS. The IS350. The 335i coupe. The new A4/A5. They're all very attractive to me.

"The tail lights and the slight under curve of the headlights are derivative of BMW."

That is incorrect. This headlight style originated with the Audi Nuvolari concept in 2003, and was in fact on the last-gen A4 also. The rear lights also started with the Nuvolari, but have been carried on to the A8 (2003), A6 Avant (2005), B7 A4 (2005), Q7 (2006), A3 Sportback (2006), A5 and now this. It is an Audi trait rather than a BMW design concept. Nobody is copying anyone, however. Only the Chinese truly copy other brands.

well well, I really like Audis, I own 2, I sell them, but in a way this is very disapointing. I was expecting something more aggressive, but I guess the conservative approach won over at Ingolstadt...
It makes sense in 3 ways:
1st, the A4 is the big seller for the brand and the B7 is still selling well but the B6 had more "road presence", so this car looks more like an evolution of the B6.
2nd, while the other carmakers are going all out with aggressive designs, smoke and mirrors, plastic splitters and fenders, Audi still wants to appeal to those consumers that are traditionists and conservative. And still want a luxuxry german car.
3rd; the real revolution is under the skin, read the specs on that car and you'll see that beauty is deeper that shin deep. New transmissions, new platform, new technologies, safety, driving comfort, driving pleasure, driving dynamics, and it goes on and on, they did not leave one rock unturn.

So, like I was saying for the new Jag., it looks disapointing and boring but let's wait to see one in the street and sit in one and then we will be able to comment.

It looks great, they have continued to allow this vehicle to evolve nicely as they do most Audis. It thankfully has avoided the strange styling turn Audi took with the A5.

But what I want to know is, where is all the criticism of it growing in size? Where are words like bloated and fat asses? How big do these German compacts have to become before they are subject to the same harsh criticism as the Japanese?

"strange" styling turn? What are you talking about? The A5 has been heralded as one of the most beautiful coupes for under $100K. You haven't even seen it on the road yet, for God's sake! All of its styling cues are pure Audi, front to rear.

If we criticized this car's size, we may as well critize the G35, also, but neither is too large. The problem was, the B7 A4 was too small, with a rear seat that was possibly smaller than the A3's. This is a good thing, any way you look at it.

"185 inch body? That's a lot of overhang for a sports car - 6'3" total. Is this a typo". Over hang is not at the body overall length, but at the wheel base compared to the bumper, and the new A4's overhang has been noted to be shorter than the current A4s.
