Audi A4 1.8T wins 11 car shootout in Auto Motor und Sport
Although this article is in German, the Audi A4 1.8T just won an 11 car shootout in Auto Motor und Sport.

The car not only defeated competitors such as Opel, Chrysler, Saab, and Volkswagen, but it also took down two other German competitors in the form of BMW's 318i and Mercedes' C-class.

It look like the Audi's longer wheelbase and roomier interior is paying off big time for the A4 in the handling department. Where the previous Audi A4 would oversteer tremendously and feel nervous at the limit, this new A4 has much more neutral handling, a more balanced chassis, less understeer, and more confidence at the helm. Audi's interior is truly huge in the new B8 A4 compared to the older model. Rear occupants no longer feel cramped with their knees having little to no room to move around. Now the rear quarters are a comfortable place to be.

Audi's new A4 has been praised time and time again by the media and now we really see the changes paying off in this comparison test.

I was able to get a little paragraph of translated information regarding the A4, so for all of you that don't understand German the following paragraph will explain why the Audi A4 won:

A Auto Motor und Sport subscription is about $180. a year, here in the USA.

Below is a single paragraph translated:

The new A4 possesses a balanced weight distribution and connects neutral handling with balanced suspension comfort. The handling characteristics profit more strongly from the extended wheel base than the interior from the external length grown on 4.70 meters. It locks the tasks of the driving dynamics Parcours as the class-best. If one calculates still problem-free operability, its solid processing and the strongly beginning, economical 1,8-Liter-Direkteinspritzer, the Top placement explains itself automatically.

Cheers, MS

The following is translated from German to English
(The best I could do)

The top executives of limousines-middle class, the new Audi A4 also on the knackfrischen Renault Laguna and Mazda 6 to the best VW Passat, meet for the Master's test. Under the hood: approximately 150 horsepower gasoline engines.

About a measurement of visibility, a light test and driving tests with a focus on security - such evasive on wet or stability in fast corners. Only the price will remain because of the large fluctuations in Europe unconsidered: So costs about an Audi A4 in Switzerland 26,335 euros, in Norway, on the other hand lush 43,078 euros.

Audi A4 1.8 TFSI

The new A4 has a balanced weight distribution, and connects with neutral handling balanced suspension comfort. The ride quality benefit more from the extended wheelbase than the interior space of 4.70 metres on the growing external length. The tasks of driving dynamics course, he as class best. Kalkuliert man nor the smooth operation, his solid finish and the strong antretenden, economical 1.8-liter direct-injection, explains the top ranking by itself

VW Passat 1.8 TSI

He is no longer the youngest, in the master test but still second best. With regard to the timeless virtues of the Passat is: Üppiges space meets strong ride comfort and easy operation. Added to the new, 160 horsepower 1.8-liter engine. Enormously cultivated spontaneously appealing and powerful drawing through, delivers the turbo direct the best driving performance of the master tests and remains with the average consumption still monadic.

Mercedes C 180 K

In the light channel and the street lights on the new C-class compete vigorously in the home also other criteria approaching the Mercedes the best, although in the end it only goes to third place. So he conjures from the moderate external dimensions a decent space for passengers and enough space for luggage (475 litres). Relaxed progress is the domain of the 1.5-Tonners. Despite moves in the C 180 K for the vehicle dynamics testing quite forward and overcome them driving without special effort.

Ford Mondeo 2.0

Mondeo number three, the middle class already assembled with his physical presence to intimidate want: 4.84 meters in length and 1.89 meters width plus dynamisiertes design promise much. Nevertheless, the 1,505 kilogram heavy Mondeo is not the strappers volume model, but the talented curve Swinger. With the five-speed gearbox equipped Two litres a revision would, however, not hurt: it is noisy and slightly vibrating to the point, it must be felt with the high weight plague.

BMW 318i

The 143 horsepower two-liter 318i provides spontaneous response, high culture and run a precise six-speed gearbox for the joy of driving, passage looks cobby yet different. This is the direct very sparingly. Furthermore, the 3s if needed fast. A balanced weight distribution plus rear drive mingles with a delicious cocktail dynamics driving without a hangover risk. But the compact dimensions, and the drive concept with Längsmotor require compromises at the venue. It is the front while the back as satisfactory, but not as long as in the airy beleibteren competition.

Renault Laguna 2.0
Renault wants with the new Laguna is not only to seek court deer, but also hit land. Nearly all the testers complained about the high position deep behind the wheel and on the short seats. From the back seat of protest because of low bone area and moderate head freedom. Nevertheless, the hisses tightly tuned 1.4-ton fastest in the slalom hat. In certain situations, such as quick lane changes or in the irrigated circular orbit, pushing the Renault already vorwitziger then with the rear. Still convinced of the two-litre engine in practice with his cultured nature and a pleasantly balanced force development.

Mazda 6 2.0
The new 6 is lighter than its predecessor, but no other Mittelklässler spring and dampens as tightly as he. Agil, neutral and low-side tilt happens only 1,358 kilograms heavy, clearly designed sedan curves of each type of slalom Gezacke to long-bend highway. The drehfreudige engine together with the fun-crunchy on short routes operating Six gearbox supports dynamic ambitions. Spritsparende less, with 10.2 litres/100 km ranked only the Mazda 6 in the rear middle of the field - just as in the end result.

Opel Vectra 2.2
The Opel Mittelklässler can restart tolerated. Even if he does not in any discipline through, but he consistently ranks in the rear part of the field, except for the space and space feeling. His somewhat poltrige, stuckerige suspension is short bumps. Neatly, the cultured, 2.2-litre direct go. He uses his capacity advantage, and offers even at low speeds useful boost. Although the body after being clearly, the Vectra remains good-natured and easy to manage. When brakes disappoint pedal feel and delay. Miserabel is also the panoramic view.

Saab 9-3 1.8t
After the facelift of the 9-3, the Swede holds fahrdynamisch genteel. As the clear Untersteuerer insists it only in extreme cases gently with the rear. Otherwise, the Saab 9-3 Scandinavian Gentleman, its occupants on wohnzimmertauglich embeds comfortable front seats and turbo power by pushing their destination. 1.8 liter large and gently charged through the 150 hp four-cylinder speed the band without significant mood swings

Last two cars in the test. They don't like the Sebring.

Peugeot 407 140
Despite the gluttonous acting Kühlermauls lands of the 407 only on the penultimate place. For one coupéhafte affects the shape of space and inventory, on the other hand, can the chassis interpretation between comfort and dynamism. This works only be an average of two liters committed to brüllig and vibrationsfreudig, snaps the five gear to doughy, howls of the drive train to the contraflow annoying. Together with the worst light in comparison leads to a disappointing placement.

Chrysler Sebring 2.0
Where the Sebring is back. Each chapter lost at the end so that even the 300-point mark misses: The 4.85-meter-long Chrysler cashes in Master Klatsche a test. Okay, it is not unsafe car. But no good. The Americans create it on the outside length of a Mercedes E-class is scarce room feeling a 3-BMW, and the smallest suitcase quarters. Under the bonnet crows only a 156 hp strong two-litre four-cylinder. Exceptionally about it is exceeding its strong Durchzugsschwäche. Similar sad shape, the testing for driving safety: Whether slalom, ISO Wedel test or double lane change wet. But in life off the pylons patzt of confusing, not even particularly cheap Sebring.

I've said it before, and I will say it again. The new B8 Audi A4 may not look much different than the previous model and it may not drive completely different than the old model in terms of acceleration but it has three advantages that truly set it apart from the old model. They are:

1. Hugely Improved Handling - the handling is improved to the point where the new A4 is a true driver's car. Maybe not to the extent of the BMW 3-series, but the A4 offers extreme grip, much better balance than the old A4, a much better chassis than the old A4, very neutral (not as nose heavy) as the previous model. This creates a car that is fun

2. Larger interior - The A4 always lost points due to interior space. Sure, the A4 has always had an excellent interior, but the space simply was not adequate for two adults in the rear. What does Audi do? They extend the car a huge amount, thereby increasing the interior legroom significantly and improving the handling.

3. Features not found in other models in this class - Examples are climate controlled front seats with ventillation, which is a first for this cass. Audi Lane Assist warning system that warns the driver if a car is in the next lane during a change. Audi Blindspot warning system - which indicates cars in the blindspot and a back up camera.

ONLY IF AUDI DECIDED TO CREATE A 330 horsepower engine for the U.S. Bound A4 3.2 V6 would their plan be complete.

This strategy would be in line because Audi could have increased the horsepower of the S4 to something around 400 and the RS4 to near 480.

That was one mistake, but then again when China is going to become the world's largest car market in 5 years and you are number one in that market currently and doing very well in Europe, perhaps the U.S. isn't such a concern after all.

@Rosko2

You are wrong actually.

At the moment only the 3.0 TDI and the 3.2 FSI are available with quattro.
The 120hp and 160hp 1.8 TFSI, the 2.0 TDI and the 2.7 TDI are at the moment available as FWD only.

AmazinIdiot, HAHAHAHA......your BMW 318i got SLAPPED in the face by an Audi!!!!!!!

BMW 318i piece of shit. It only offers driver enjoyment, but little else. Not as roomy as the Audi A4, not as many advanced options as the Audi A4, not as comfortable on a daily basis as the Audi A4, and now.....only a slight advantage in driver enjoyment.

Look at this shitty showing by BMW.
