Audi A4 3.0 TDI earns huge praise from Autoexpress
Audi's new A4 in 3.0TDI trim has earned huge praise from Autoexpress. In fact, Autoexpress liked the car so much that they gave it 5 stars. We all know how incredibly tough it is to earn 5 stars from Autoexpress. The only cars that come to mind are the Porsche 911 GT2 and GT3, the Audi R8 and a few other models that really set new standards for either performance, practicality or both.

The new A4 3.0 TDI offers a powerful V6 engine, which is enough to propel the car from 0-60 mph in 6.1 seconds. Although not faster than the BMW 335i, the Audi offers comfort and new features which the BMW does not.

The redesigned A4 has much better handling due to the lengthened wheelbase. The A4 is now larger than both the BMW 3-series and Mercedes C-class and roomier on the inside.

The A4 has extreme levels of grip thank to Audi's Quattro AWD and where the previous A4 would have been in a ditch, this new A4 has vastly improved composure and handling at the limit. The car is more engaging than the previous version and when you push it hard the car is actually fun to drive.

Most importantly, Audi offers a whole bunch of extras which are usually not found in this class. To name a few are ventilated seats, Audi's Lane Assist Warning System, BlindSpot indicater warning system and a backup camera for the tight corners.

With excellent fuel efficiency, extreme grip, hugely improved handling, much roomier interior and options that set it apart from some other models in this class...Audi's A4 3.0 TDI is a real winner.

Also, it is highly likely that this car will make it stateside to the U.S.

Audi needed to really improve the A4 if their plan to sell 1.5 million units by 2015 is a reality. After all, the A4 is the largest selling Audi model. It looks like Audi has done just that.

Well...I hate to do this but amazingidiot might be right, although he probably didn't know it because he's an idiot.

Anyway, the 330d goes 0-60 in 6s, top speed is 155mph and combined gas mileage is 44mpg(~36mpg US) according to C/D in '06. Of course, the better gas mileage is probably due to less weight and it may also have the old standards applied to it. In any case they're both quite close in comparison. Personally, I hate the interior and the rear of the 3 sedan, so it's the A4 for me.

It was tough for me to find, but there are some specs out there for the C320 Bluetec (CDI). In the wagon form, it goes 0-60 in 7.8s and has a combined fuel economy of 33.1 mpg (~28mpg? - too lazy to find a calculator). Clearly, MB has some work to do.

Audi's AWD system with the Torsen center differential is supreme. Both Audi and Mercedes use inherently-out-of-balance 90-degree V6 engine designs. Lexus ES is FWD and is not even available with AWD. Lexus is overpriced Toyota for too many models.

I dont know why it was so hard to find specs for the C320 CDI... Looks to me like it's been tested 0-60 in 6.9 with combined fuel economy of 38.7

Official manufacturers claims are

Mercedes C320 CDI
0-62 - 7.7 sec
combined milage - 6.9L/100km > 34 US MPG

Audi A4 3.0 TDI quattro
0-62 - 6.1 sec
combined milage - 6.9L/100km > 34 US MPG

BMW 330d
0-62 - 6.7 sec
comibned milage - 6.2L/100km > 38 US MPG

the a4's longer wheelbase only gives it an edge over its competitors in terms of roominess and stablility at high speeds, not handling. that's why it's still not as "engaging" as a 3-series.

I'm fairly certain it will come right after the Q7 3.0TDI, to be their second diesel in the US lineup.

The A5 and A6 may come later...

You'd think putting a TDI in the A3 would be a key introduction as well...yet I haven't heard of any news on that front.

I love it, amazinIdiot only uses subjective data to support his claim.

What happens if I think that the A4 3.0 TDI is not a shit car compared to the BMW 330d?

Yes, fastonekiller, the A4 3.0 TDI should come to the U.S. around this time next year.

Audi sure needs this engine in the US. Audis engine line-up in the US for its regular cars is pathetic. Audi needs to be more than pretty interiors.

Turns out that almost all Audi's are rated higher by the press then their BMW counterparts.

Excuse you amazinIdiot? 420 horsepower naturally-aspirated V8 sucks????

580 horsepower twin-turbo V10 sucks????

510 horsepower Naturally-aspirated V10 sucks???

People who fundamentally cannot afford BMWs?

How so?...After all the Audi RS4, RS6 and R8 do all cost more than their BMW M counterparts.

The forthcoming Audi TT-RS is surely going to be more expensive than a BMW Z4M Coupe or Roadster.

Also even though these cars are limited edition models: Audi owners on average have higher incomes than their BMW owning counterparts.

Perhaps it is the administrative assistants, and fresh out of college grads who buy BMWs to "look cool" even though their monthly lease payment for their car is more than their monthly rent payment for their apartment....

:)

Any more subjective comments out of you amazinIdiot??

I think that the FWD platform is actually excellent engineering. I think that Audis are very highly engineered cars overall.

As for the fundamentally cannot afford BMWs part, well I addressed that with factual evidence courtesy of the Forbes article that was posted on here a few months back.

Your a complete joke.....all opinions and no facts

I love the immature nature of some of the people who posts on these threads. how often do you use 0-60 in real life, and what does it matter, if you are also throwing in fuel economy? if you consistantly do 0-60,0-60,0-60, your mpg is not going to be 34-38mpg. Thats a fact. Get a life people. Praise things for what they are, and you don't always have to compare it to "something better"!

Rosko,
There you go again, shooting your mouth off thinking no one will call your bluff (or stupidity).

Let's see, Audi's best 3.0 TDI gets 40mpg combined and 183g/km at 6.1sec.
The half-assed Lexus IS220d gets 44mpg at 163g/km but is signiicantly slower at 8.9sec.
This looks bad until you compare it to the A4 2.0 TDI which gets 46mpg at 167g/km and a lightning fast 10.2 seconds.
Just for kicks, the A4 2.7TDI is 41mpg, 179g/km and 8.6sec. Wow, they sure showed Lexus.

The Germans must pray to the gods everynight thanking them for Lexus not wanting to waste its time with dead technology, meaning they only have to compete against an engine Toyota grabbed out of their discarded parts bin.

Your such a joke.

I do love Audi's "Audi's Lane Assist Warning System", I wish all cars had this.
