Audi A4 B8 - The First Official Information
The official announcement for the new Audi A4 is expected some time today (august 28th). In the meantime, in an announcement about "efficient drive systems", Audi has released some interesting tidbits that help us put the new A4 (B8) in perspective with the previous two generations (B6 and B7).
In the chart above (click on the image for a higher resolution version) you can see a comparison of technical data between B6, B7 and B8 for an A4 1.8T. A first thing to be noted is the very small difference in weight, with the B8 25 kg heavier than the B6 (from 1,370 to 1,395 kg).
Another interesting thing is the passage from the old 1.8T to the new 1.8 TFSI. Power output has risen from 150 to 170 ps, torque from 210 to 250 Nm (passing through the 163 ps/225 Nm for the A4 B7), while fuel consumption is down 15% from 8.3 to 7.1 liters per 100 km. CO2 emissions are down 15% too, from 199 to 169 g/km. Performance should be sensibly better, with a 0-100 km/h time that should be down from 8.9 to 8.4 seconds.

Gee, Audi is going to get obliterated in the performance stakes yet again. Courtesy of BMWs 335i.
The A4 V6 is only going to have 265 horsepower, with even more weight.

and its odd people/mags keep comparing the 335i to the s5, instead of the a5, with the 265hp engine. when that is the car that was created to go against the 335i, if the 335i is running with the s5, performance wise, the a5/a4(top engine) have no chance

The A4 3.2 was not created to go against the 335i.
The 330i was created to go against the A4 3.2. In Europe the 330i is still sold.

328i < A4/A5 < 335i < S4/S5 < M3 < RS4/RS5
I can't believe you BMW fanboys haven't realized that, but this is how Audi works. They cover BMW on all counts. All of their models are "in between," none competing directly. I like that about them.
And who says BMW makes the template? Why isn't it BMW that's the "in between" one?

for one what the hell is a fanboy that sounds sweet. not one of those. let me break down for you VW FANS
1.328i----replaced 325i
2.335i----replaced 335i
3.M3
ok thats it in the engines department for the 3 series. make all the excuses you vw people need. but the top engine in the A4 competes with the 335i hence there being a lowere engine to compete with the 328i. They make an excuse as to why Audi cant best BMW, including making things up. when there was a 328i as the top choice it didn't compete with the s4, the 330i didnt either, the 335i successor to both of those cars, which means the top engine in the A4 competes with the 335i. the 330i "again" is not for sale, it was replaced. the 335i beat audis performance V8 model that for years has competed with the M3 knowing that the AUDI "fanboys"(that fits) know the A5 would obviously lose to the 335i as would the top engine in the A4. "AND FOR CLARITY IN EUROPE ALOT OF TIMES MANUFACTURERS STILL PRODUCE THE PREVIOUS GENERATION CAR AND USE SOMETIME OF SUFFIX IN REALITY, THE DIFFERENCE IN PRICE BETWEEN THE 330I AND 335I FOR US IS NO MORE THAN A COUPLE THOUSAND. 335i---unstoppable. LOL ANY EXCUSE THOUGH RIGHT

Don't you know that more weight gives you a better ride GermanNut? The trick to as good ride is to have more sprung weight and less unsprung weight -- preferably both. This Audi has more than adequate power to propel a slightly heavier body.

If Audi wanted to win the performance stakes they should have made at least 340 horsepower to compensate for the added weight of Quattro AWD.

THANK GOD!!!! EVILHOMER, I'VE BEEN WAITING TO HEAR THAT!!!
I had an A6 2.7T quattro- it was a great sedan. Then I drove the new-for-2004 A6 4.2 quattro, and was disappointed by the car's less-than-sporting demeanor. That's what brought me to the S4, which I'm happy about.
However, they desperately need a better V6. I don't care if it makes the V8 obsolete in the A6. The mojo of the 2.7T should be resurrected, but with at least 60 more horsepower.

GermanNut, that is stupid. It would make the 354hp S4 obsolete. I need the S4 to stay alive.

maybe their whole intent of their non-perfomance division is to provide sufficient power to the vehicle.
in the end if its hp they want, they'd buy the s4/rs4

Or the apparently 610hp RS6. I don't think Audi is lacking from a performance standpoint.
No, I'm sure of it.

People, seriously you're looking at the wrong engines! You're comparing BMW's top engine in the 3-series with Audi's smallest engine. This would be something to compare to the 318i which has 129PS/95kW (can someone translate those numbers).
The A4 line will have the larger engines, including V6, diesel and V8 variants.

Follow up to mine. the BMW 1.8 engine (which is actually closer to 2.0L) produces 127 HP. Now compare that to Audi's 170.

The engine in the 318i is actually a 2.0 litre.
The B7 A4 also had a 2.0 inline 4 with 130hp.

Never ceases to amaze me how often I get modded down for factual comments on this site. The opinions and rants, fine, but factual comments are just that. Fact. Modding me down won't make them change or go away.

bmwdrvr,
That's because the S5 goes against the 335i and the RS5 will go against the M3. A4's go against all other 3 series variants.

I see it this way:
A4 2.0T > 328i > A4 3.2 > 335i > S5 > M3 > RS5

In Europe it is like this with the B7.
A4 1.6 < 318i < A4 2.0 < 320i < A4 1.8T < A4 2.0TFSI < 325i < A4 2.0 TFSI DTM < A4 3.2 = 330i < 335i < S4 < M3 < RS4

thats not true......ok turbos aside, the 335i only has 45 more hp than the 330i it replaces. you mean to tell me, that 45hp, put the 335i in a different segment yeah right. it only costs about 2 grand more than the 335i. every mag for years has compared the s4, to the m3, the m3 and s4 are in the same price brackett, and are the performance variants of the cars they are based on. the rs4 was priced above, and had stats that put it above the m3, like the rs6. the rs models are always more expensive, than the mercedes, and bmw top performance models by a few thousand. so this s4, competes with the 335i is just an excuse. the 335i isnt even a performance model, it is a regular 3 series model, and again it has 45 more horses than the 330i, compare that to the difference between the a5 and s5. the 3 series comes 3 trims, the 328i, 335i, and m3....so your saying that the 2 a4 models both compete with the low end 328i? thats bs,
