Audi is extending its A4 Cabriolet range to include a fourth and, once
again, emphatically sporty version. The 1.8-litre inline four-cylinder unit
with turbocharging develops an output of 120 kW (163 bhp). This version too –
like the six-cylinder 2.4, 3.0 and 2.5 TDI – can be combined either with the
continuously variable multitronic automatic transmission or the standard-fit
manual gearbox.



 


The engine output
and a powerful torque of 225 Newton-metres between 1,950 and 4,700 rpm ensure
fast sprints and ample pulling power from all speed ranges. The version with
manual gearbox accelerates from a standstill to 100 km/h in just 9.4 seconds.
The multitronic version even reaches this speed 0.1 seconds faster. The top
speed of the A4 Cabriolet 1.8T is 226 km/h (5-speed) or 219 km/h (with
multitronic).


 


Equally
impressive are the combination of thrust characteristic of turbocharged
engines, exemplary free-revving and spontaneous response even at the slightest
movement of the accelerator pedal – the prerequisite for distinctive handling
characteristics.


 


The Audi A4 Cabriolet introduces a dimension to transmission technology
that is unique in the convertible segment – the combination of turbo engine and
continuously variable multitronic. This transmission offers the dynamic
qualities of a manual gearbox and surpasses the comfort of a conventional

It is therefore possible for drivers to cruise along smoothly without
hectic use of the pedals – a manner of driving preferred by drivers of
convertibles – or to adopt a distinctly dynamic style.


 


The A4 Cabriolet 1.8T demonstrates its sporting character, however, by
no means in the discipline of driveline only. The aluminium, lightweight
chassis with independent suspension also guarantees agility and a high level of
steering precision. Four-link front suspension and trapezoidal-link rear
suspension provide the perfect basis for the impressive dynamic handling of the
A4 Cabriolet.


 


At the same time, the 1.8T is distinctly modest in its
fuel consumption: only 8.5 litres of Super petrol per 100 kilometres (overall
according to EC) flow from the 70-litre tank, independent of the choice of
gearbox.


 


Prices for the
Audi A4 Cabriolet 1.8T in Germany will start at € 32,450. The new version can
be ordered straight away; delivery of the first models will take place at the
start of 2003.
