Audi A5 3.0 TDI V6 averages 37 mpg in test!
The folks at MSN Cars UK got a chance to drive the Audi A5 3.0 TDI and supposedly averaged an amazing fuel-economy. Even if it’s a diesel car, who would think that the 3.0 liter TDI V6 turbo-engine that produces 240 horsepower would get good fuel-economy.

Well the MSN guys averaged and outstanding 37 mpg with the A5 3.0 TDI and with aggressive driving those figures came down to...

"While we won’t be getting this variant in the U.S., the 3.0 liter TDI V6 will be available for us in the new Touareg and the new sexy Audi A4 in 2008."

Why? Why? Why??? Is everyone just waiting for one person to make the first move and then we'll see a flood of diesels, or are they just so "once bitten, twice shy" about the diesel backlash of the 70s/80s.

They really are spending too much time putting a toe in the water rather than jumping it. (Okay, that was one too many cliches)

The 70's/80's diesels you refer to are strictly a GM fiasco. GM dieselized engines that were originally designed as gas engines instead of designing a proper diesel engine from scratch. Furthermore, diesels of that era did not benefit from today's high pressure common rail injection and other recent improvements aimed at cleaning up the exhaust and improving efficiency.
My guess is that, if Mercedes started selling its Vision C220 Bluetech in North America today, they could get full MSRP for every one of them for the first year or two.

Does diesel still emit black smoke from the exhaust? I always see diesels with charcoal all over the rear bumper from the exhaust. That alone would keep me from getting one, too much maintenance IMHO.

WHAT?!? Too much maintenance?! Black smoke?! CHARCOAL?! WTF!? Are you still living in the 80's?! That is just silly! New diesels fitted with PM-filters(which this car has) emmit less particulate than any gasoline car, it does far more miles, and because the engines pack more torque, they don't need to do as many revs as gasoline engines meaning that it is more reliable and in many cases require LESS maintenance than its gasoline sibling! Welcome to the 21st century and the world of modern technology!

Buddy relax, there are only a handful of diesels out on the road in the US, and the ones I STILL see TODAY have that issue which is why I asked. My neighbor has a diesel Passat (not that old) and there's crap on the bumper by the exhaust.

But please, continue to have a heart attack on a public forum.

TheSailor makes sense. I have a gasoline engine with coil over plug ignition and I had two ignition coils crap out in as many weeks -- this would have been impossible with a diesel.

This engine will be available in the states in the following vehicles:

Q7 (first)
A4 (second)
A5
Q5
A6

Don't expect them all at the same time but should be in that order.

Audi would definitely get a repeat order from me if the A5 arrives with a diesel by next spring.

congrats to Audi...germans do know their motors when it comes to diesels. No one one has answer tot hem on that aspect.

Hopefully they dont tarnish the appeal of the A5 by offering crappy options with this technology.

i think there's a hidden rule somewhere that says diesels can't be well-equipped. SUX!

What? What are you talking about? It will have all the same features as the A5 3.2 quattro.

But it's slower. The 335d, which this car competes with, gets slightly lower mileage. They have very similar performance, but I can't remember the exact times.

Oh and BTW, for anyone who's wondering, the article clarifies that these are US figures. That's incredible. I would buy this over an S5 any day of the week.

Well... maybe not quite. But I would *probably* buy it over the S5.

Yet another diesel that's too dirty to come across the pond except in SUV form.

I noticed they didn't even bother to make the A5 a Bluemotion. Why raise productions costs to make a cleaner engine when Europe happily lowers the standards for you.

They're not calling it Bluemotion--that's VW. But anyway, the Bluetec Audis will probably be developed for coming generations or mid-cycle updates.

What's the beef? Why do you have to be down on diesels when they're so obviously superior to gasoline engines? All it takes is a particulate filter.

I saw the Touareg with the 3.0TDI today.
(as well as the Dakar TDI and a new Jetta with the Passat's 2.0 TDI that's coming to the US soon)
My wife wants to replace her A6 wagon with one.
Maybe.
I want an A6 with the V6 TDI, but I guess that's not coming..........
