Audi A5 gets new FSI engine
The first four-cylinder engine to power the all-new Audi A5 coupé joins the UK range this week, and fittingly it too is also a completely new design. The advanced, directly injected successor to the familiar 1.8-litre Turbo petrol unit that has powered A3, A4, A6 and TT models in the past creates the A5 1.8 TFSI, which is available to order now for an OTR price of £26,190. First UK deliveries are expected in late November.

Performance-enhancing turbo charging and fuel-rationing FSI direct petrol injection combine in the new unit to deliver 170PS at 4,800rpm and a healthy 250Nm torque peak that remains available from 1,500rpm through to 4,800rpm. As a result, the front-wheel-driven A5 1.8 TFSI with six-speed manual transmission passes the 62mph yardstick 8.4 seconds after take off, and can continue to a top speed of 140mph, all the while demonstrating a healthy dislike for petrol, with up to 39.8mpg possible according to the combined cycle test.

Didn't Audi have an 1.8 liter turbo that produced 180HP? Why this one produces less at 170HP?

Three reasons: less turbo lag, more torque across the power spectrum, better fuel economy

Contrary to popular misconception, most drivers vastly prefer to drive a high-torque engine over one that maximizes peak horsepower. So Audi chose to keep economy and torque high. Another great engine builder, Honda, generally takes the approach of low torque, high economy. Very different driving experiences, but both get the job done.

Don't focus on peak HP unless you're intending to race. For a road car, many, many other factors come into play.

A5 looks like a Huyndai Sonata from the front.

Not nearly as much as the Lexus IS does from the rear!

Hyundai openly admitted that they copied the Audi A6's headlamps for the Sonata.

Yes yes yes... A 1.8T is all very nice, but what we all want to see is whether they are going to offer a 3.2TFSI! Now that would be a real seller!

1.8l, is that it?

No, in more serious tone however I would like Audi to produce a car that competes with the BMW 3, Lexus IS, and Infinti G in terms of power with a V6. Their 3.2 unit is underpowered compared to this and I believe edmunds.com also mentioned this by saying that the chassis dynamics are greatly improved but the engine is behind. I know that there is an S4, but an M3 hasn't stopped BMW from building a 335. Audi seriously needs to get its power up to 300 so they can compete with BMW more evenly. I can't believe that companies don't do this before, it is so obvious.

I agree. They've taken a strange approach with the new B8 A4/A5. The A4/A5 2.0T is supposed to compete with lower-level 3 Series models in Europe, the A4/A5 3.2 models are above the 328i but below the 335i and the S4/S5 will be above the 335i and below the M3. Then there's the RS5...

But I still just think it would make more sense for Audi to compete directly. I don't know where the S4/S5 would fit into the lineup, though, and I definitely don't want those two to go away.

IS's rear looks like Hyundai Sonata's is the worst observation i have heard in a long time.

IS rear looks just like it's elder sibling GS, only shortned and it's one of the most beautiful.

but A5 does look like Hyundai Sonata from front and a BMW from behind.Only the S5 or A5 with S-Line kit looks good.

and btw Hyundai Sonata's rear end was a rip-off of the current pre-facelifted Accord (2003-2005).

HYUNDAI OPENLY ADMITTED THAT THE SONATA COPIES THE A6'S HEADLAMPS, AND THEY DREW INSPIRATION FROM AUDI.

There.
