Audi A5 with new 2.7L TDI faster and gets better mileage than the Camry hybrid?
In Europe, the Audi A5 now comes with a 2.7L diesel engine making 190 bhp and it reaches 100 km/h in just 7.6 seconds and reportedly gets an average of 35 miles per US gallon. In the recent Edmunds hybrid comparison test, the Camry hybrid went 0 to 60 mph (96 km/h) in 8.4 seconds and got an observed mileage of 32.6 mpg.

I know, the Camry has that big plastic beak front end :(

But there are folks like me that want and need 4 doors.

You see I'm a real estate agent and I don't want my clients climbing into the back seat and banging their heads.

Why even bother comparing it to anything from Toyota? To amuse your small brains for the rest of the day? Or was it to start a war? HMmm...I wonder what will happen next...

"Why even bother comparing it to anything from Toyota? To amuse your small brains for the rest of the day?"

That has to be the most amusing thing I have read in a while! Thanks Will!

Let me guess, the A5 is less expensive too? Umm, no.

These comparison come from out of the blue! It really makes me wonder how some of these people afford the cars that they drool over, consdering the fact that most of them couldn't form a coherent thought based on comparisons if their life depended on it.

Audi is a much nicer car, of course. It is supposed to be so, it is a luxury car, the Camry is not. I would drive the Audi any day over the Camry.

However, according to the article, the Audi is PREDICTED (not tested) at 6.7L/100km, the Camry is now rated at newly revised 6.9L/100km, and probably pollutes much less.

Again shows the stupidity of Autospies editors comparing Apple and Oranges just to incite a flame war and keep on repeating the same old crap again - Hybrid vs Diesel. Edmunds tested the Camry hybrid at 44.5mpg in the city, which is the strength of the Hybrid. Diesel have great highway because they run very efficiently. Once again both techs have their merits but diesel are a great disadvantage in the US because of higher pricings and less pumps = more wait time and less availability.

Maybe if you look at the articles you might want to rethink the "stupid" comment. Because if you indeed read it close enough you might find it was an independent source.

Plus right now at least in the southern states diesel has a slight price advantage to regular gasoline.

Sport, you can quote as many sources as you want claiming the "hybrid hype" is over, but month after month, sales continue to rise.

Maybe the with a (finally) clean diesel will temporarily and barely best a larger, heavier, 4 door, mid-sized sedan. But this is only Gen 2 of the hybrid powertrain. It's taken a century to have diesels finaly be able to combine power, eficiency and cleanliness. And it's still not even available yet.

So go ahead, just keep waiting for these clean, powerful diesels. Nothing wrong with waiting another year or two, you've already waited 100 years. In the meantime, I'll wait for gen 3 hybrid synergy drive, which should be out around the same time.

toyotamarc, I'm not even going to begin. You are hopelessly biased and your logic is flawed. I would have no trouble going through the "sales-don't-make-the-car-better" argument, but I just don't feel like it, it's so drawn-out.

Mercedes Benz will be making a diesel hybrid by at least 2010, perhaps 2009.

Just to say, the Passat 2.0 tdi 170 hp gets over 38 US combined, and 45 mpg on the highway, and does 0-60 in about 8.4 (0-62 in 8.6).
It has CO2 emissions of 160g/km, probably about the same as the Camry Hybrid.

If you really want economy you can get a 1.9 tdi with 105 hp, gets 50 mpg on the highway and 42 combined, but is rather slow (0-60 in 11.9). Co2 emissions are 148g/km, which is excellent.

Class leader is the BMW 320d with 160 hp, 0-60 in 8.1, and 42 combined, and 51 on the highway. Co2 emissions of 153g/km.

The Camry hybrid has been beaten for rather a long time.

This 2.7 tdi engine in the A5 is old, and not as advance as newer ones. The Passat 2.0 tdi is only down 20 hp on it despite the smaller capacity.

Except the IS220d. A very clean diesel, probably the cleanest and most refined diesel in the world.

The ugly Audi A5 should be compared to the Toyota Solara. The Toyota Solara owns the Audi in everything too. And the Camry is one of the cleanest and most stylistically attractive and groundbreaking designs out there in my opinion. The Audi A5 is bland as hell.

Toyotas aren't even in the same class as Audi's or other premium German brands. Toyota is a piece of junk.

The Solara is a lame attempt by Toyota to have a "classy" car in their lineup - and it fails miserably. The Audi A5 is a stunning car with typical Teutonic design cues and futuristic elegance characteristic of late Audi designs. Don't even compare the two because they're in a different class and the A5 simply makes the Solara look what it looks like: BORING.

When you have driven a diesel, there isn't anything better, and the fuel consumption is awesome.

These 2 vehicles are not in the same class, so a comparison test between them is not justified.

Rupert, the point is, they would NEVER, EVER, EVER be cross-shopped. The A5 2.7TDI's closest competitor would be some form of E92 diesel, no?

Diesels rule. They are all over europe, that's for sure. Amazing fuel economy, good performance, and way cheaper than hybrids. Given the choice of the two, I can't see why anyone whould choose a hybrid. Especially since most hybrids are predicted to have lives of 100k miles vs at least twice that for diesels.

I would be embarrassed if it wasn't as quick as the Camry hybrid. That's not actually the performance benchmark, is it?

However, my pick of the A5 bunch would be the 3.0TDI. Packs extra grunt without sacrificing much in terms of efficiency.

Many want to make comments about diesels being dirty, but the only category in which diesels now trail is NOx. Diesel tech. reduced PM by 90% in just one year, coming on par with gassers in a hurry!

Diesels naturally emit less CO, total HCs, and virtually no VOCs; so--no--they're not too dirty; just dirty to our anti-diesel-biased EPA who developed regulations based on the capabilities and the incapabilities of the gas-powered engines, and this explains why the limit on CO has not been reduced since 1989. Diesels could come in way below the limit on CO, but are having touble reducing NOx, 90% in just four years, which is the requirement of our EPA.
