Audi A7 Convertible in the works
It seems like four-door coupes are a mandatory model for all German luxury auto makers. Mercedes started it all with its successful CLS; Porsche is putting the finishing touches on its Panamera; BMW is reported to be working on a four-door sports sedan based on the BMW CS Concept; and its no secret that Audi has been working on its own four-door coupe dubbed as the A7.

While Audi has remained pretty hush-hush on progress of the A7, the company is already reported to be planning another variant of the model. According to Auto Motor Sport, a convertible variant is being discussed for the Audi A7 as an answer to the Mercedes-Benz Ocean Drive Concept.

The report said that if the US market shows reasonable interest in such a model, the Audi A7 convertible may become a reality.

Will it be built on the new modular platform?

Anyway, Audi did a stunning job with the new S6 and S8 (WOW); we can safely expect this car to be a stunner as well.

"if the US market shows reasonable interest in such a model, the Audi A7 convertible may become a reality"

More proof that it's American taste that dictates when many of the car makers
best models get produced. It is a shame Audi lags so far behind the big 3 (Lexus, BMW and Mercedes) in North America.

Audi might be behind Lexus, BMW and MBZ for now, but with a major change in advertising direction and a major product onslaught in many segments that Audi currently does not play in, that should start changing things quickly.

Don't be too down on the US, though you're right. The Citroen C6, Peugeot 607, Alfa 159, Skoda Superb, Fiat Croma, Renault Laguna, entire Lancia line, Seat Toledo, Mercedes A-Class, BMW 1-series and the Smart cars are but a few of the cars developed exclusively for the US/Canadian market with no thought to anyone else. You poor, poor foreigners. Just face it. We own you and you love it.

Please!

You can't be serious. Let me guess, you think Chris Bangle is some kind of design god?

Audi's top designers come from Italy, most recently from Alpha Romeo. If I ever see a Bangle butt on an Audi I'll disown the brand!

It's true however that most of the engineers that work for Audi, BMW, Porsche, VW and Mercedes all went to similar if not the same schools, usually have worked for one of the others before joining the company they are currently with, and use many parts supplied for all five brands by the same few domestic companies such as Bosche and Siemans. That power window regulater in your VW is probably the same one used in a C class etc.

amazinBimmer, Audi rewrote the book of car design in 1983 with the introduction of the Audi 5000. It revolutionized the industry, as it was the first car to incorporate "aero-smooth" design features. While all other cars had cladding, blocky mirrors and other nonsense, the 5000 woke everyone up with its sleek, fresh design and without it, today's vehicles wouldn't be the same. BMW hasn't changed car design at all... they've just come up with an odd-looking trunk.

Yes this does look ugly like a BMW. Thankfully, this is only a photoshop.

And lol at S4cabrio. If my memory serves me correctly, which it does, he is always the main pundit of BMW's "revolutionary design" in any post about Lexus.

The A7 convertible has been in the works for some time now. Please note, this will not be a performance car. The type of sophisticated structural engineering needed to do a 4 door convertible will not only be expensive, but also extreemly heavy. This will be something for an owner to "arrive" in or be "seen" driving. There was even rumor at one point of "butterfly" suicide doors. Think RR Phantom combined with a McLaren SLR and you kind of get the idea. I guess if the car is going to be heavy to begin with, who cares if the doors weigh a ton too.

Oh well, the things been redesigned a half dozen times since the project started and will probably be redone a dozen more before it ever releases for sale. By then, the suicide doors will probably be history anyway. The whole car is kind of a cool idea though. I can just picture Paris flashing her ying yang to a National Inquirer Photog getting out of her Audi A7 instead of the usual Bentley or Ferrari which, of course is exactly what Audi is hoping for.

I am an Audi fan - but I hope they don't build this. I would prefer them to build something to compete with the CL not the CLS. Something between the sport of a BMW 6 and the luxury status of a CL. The CLS was a hot niche vehicle - but all these companies are going to flood the market. Is it just me or does a four-door coupe sound like an oxymoron?

Mr. Alwasyfollow. Please dont put audi and VW in the same breath. by mental midget like you continually doing that, it does not validate the shitty, 2nd (audi) and third tier (VW) brand.
and yes, Chris bangle is a god.... jeez just look at the 3, 6 X5. bold and industry changing. Not always following

S4.. you are not a euro fan. You are a guy who compromises. look at your revved up VW. That pos was probably made in the Czech republic.. Jeez.. I keep saying.. you should have shelled out the cash...the s4 is just such a bland looking poor performer that is taken down by a regular 3 series.

Uhuh, you're so right. That's why I'm going ot get a 328i for my next car :-P

No, I'm probably getting a 911 C4S. Which, by your standards, is also a re-badged VW.

Oh and, you're also right about how I didn't spend enough money. It was only $65K, which is a pathetic 20X more expensive than your 1992 BMW 318i.

AmazingBimmer I'm curious to hear what you think about Audi's RS line?

Are they overpriced cars that can take down BMWs M lineup of cars that lose their value like crazy even though we know the previous RS6 held its value better than the E39 M5 and the current RS4 is holding its value better than a BMW M3.
