In November AUDI AG delivered around 82,750 cars to customers – 8.9 percent more than in the preceding month (2008: 75,965). Between January and November Audi sold some 870,600 cars worldwide (2008: 920,689). The distance behind the record year of 2008 thus shrunk to 5.4 percent. Besides high growth rates in the Asia-Pacific region, sales figures in the United States and in other American markets also contributed to the good monthly results.
“We’ve already exceeded this year’s target for China in November,” says Peter Schwarzenbauer, Member of the Board of Management for Marketing and Sales at AUDI AG. “Our leadership position there is strengthening us. But sales figures in the Americas and Europe are also developing very
well. Worldwide, we’ve exceeded the preceding year’s figures in 42 markets in November.”
In China (including Hong Kong) sales figures for Audi climbed in November by 101.9 percent to
16,503 premium cars (2008: 8,173). A cumulative total of 139,872 cars for the year adds up to
growth of 28.6 percent (2008: 108,737). In the entire Asia-Pacific region the brand recorded an
increase of 85.6 percent to around 20,000 cars last month (2008: 10,783). The first eleven months exhibited a growth rate of some 25 percent, with 176,400 cars sold (2008: 141,148). Audi achieved a significant increase in sales in Australia, South Korea, India and Singapore, among other countries.
November sales figures in the United States remained similar to last year, with 6,810 cars sold
(2008: 6,788). Between January and November, unit sales were only 7.9 percent below the preceding year’s level, with 73,686 cars sold (2008: 80,048). Thanks to this strong result compared with the competition, the company was able to further increase its share in the premium market – to
8.3 percent over the first eleven months (2008: 7.0 percent). In other important American markets the number of premium cars sold by Audi increased significantly – in Canada, for example, and in the growth market of Brazil.
In Europe the distance behind the record month of the preceding year shrunk in November to
4.4 percent, with around 51,800 cars sold (2008: 54,204). In Great Britain, the second-largest market outside Germany for the Ingolstadt company, sales figures climbed in November by 14.2 percent to 6,698 cars (2008: 5,866). And Audi again recorded a significant increase in November in other large markets like France and Austria. Over the first eleven months the distance behind 2008 decreased to 11.9 percent for Europe, with around 574,900 cars delivered (2008: 652,521). In Germany AUDI AG
sold 21,836 cars in November (2008: 22,178) – a slight decline of 1.5 percent compared with the preceding year. Profits for the first eleven months thus remained 9.1 percent behind the record
value of the preceding year (2008: 232,444).
Compared with November of the preceding year, the Audi Q5, introduced a year ago, showed the
biggest growth with around 9,550 units sold, followed by the Audi A5 family, with 7,650 units sold in
the past month. The A3 Sportback recorded an increase of 4.2 percent to around 13,100 units. Audi remained the leader worldwide in its segment between January and November thanks to the A6,
which contributed to growth especially in China.
AUDI AG sold a total of 1,003,469 cars in 2008 and thus achieved its 13th consecutive record year. The Company posted new record figures with revenue of €34.2 billion and profit before tax of €3.2 billion. Audi produces vehicles in Ingolstadt and Neckarsulm (Germany), Györ (Hungary), Changchun (China) and Brussels (Belgium). Aurangabad in India saw the start of CKD production of the Audi A6 at the end of 2007 and of the Audi A4 in early October 2008. The Company is active in more than 100 markets worldwide. AUDI AG’s wholly owned subsidiaries include Automobili Lamborghini Holding S.p.A. in Sant’Agata Bolognese (Italy) and quattro GmbH in Neckarsulm. Audi currently employs around 58,000 people worldwide, including 46,500 in Germany. The brand with the four rings invests around €2 billion each year in order to sustain the company’s technological lead embodied in its “Vorsprung durch Technik” slogan. Audi plans to significantly increase the number of models in its portfolio by 2015 to 42. Audi celebrates its 100th birthday this year. The company was founded by August Horch in Zwickau on July 16, 1909; he named it AUDI after the Latin translation of his surname (“hark!”).
