Audi Powers On With Details About The 2009 RS6
580 hp and 479 lb-ft of torque - with its twin-turbo V10 and quattro permanent all-wheel drive, the Audi RS 6 is a car without equal. Following on the heels of the RS 6 Avant, Audi now presents the sedan. It drives like a supercar thanks to its superior performance and thrilling dynamics, yet offers all of the everyday utility of a large business sedan.

The engine of the new Audi RS 6 is a high-tech work of art. The 4,991 cc V10 bundles a number of Audi's race-winning technologies - FSI direct fuel injection, dry-sump lubrication and two turbochargers. With up to 1.6 bar of boost pressure, these provide smooth, powerful thrust and an incomparable power band: The peak torque of 650 Nm (479.42 lb-ft) is available from 1,500 to 6,250 rpm and thus nearly over the entire rev range. Peak power of 426 kW (580 hp) is generated between 6,250 rpm and the maximum figure of 6,700 rpm.

With a power-to-weight ratio of 3.4 kilograms per hp, the Audi RS 6 performs like a supercar. It catapults to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in 4.5 seconds on its way to an electronically-limited top speed of 250 km/h (155.34 mph), which can be optionally raised to 280 km/h (173.98 mph). The V10 responds immediately and spontaneously to the throttle, and is very smooth while accelerating with a powerful roar.

The engine's power flows through the six-speed tiptronic, one of a new, dynamic generation of Audi automatic transmissions. Its reaction time has been reduced to one tenth of a second, shift time has been halved compared to units used in other models and transmission ratios are short. The driver can also manually change gears either using the shift lever or the paddles on the steering wheel. The tiptronic transmission transfers the power to an extremely sporty, rear-weighted quattro drive train.

Precision high-tech suspension

The technology bundled into the suspension of the Audi RS 6 guarantees an amazing performance experience. The front axle features four lightweight aluminum control arms per wheel, whose elastokinematics have been designed for particularly sporty performance. The characteristics of the speed-dependent servotronic power steering were retuned and the steering gear ratio is a direct 12.5:1. The rear suspension kinematics have also been modified.

The development engineers have also deployed an exclusive damping technology: Dynamic Ride Control DRC reduces pitch and roll using purely mechanical means. Hydraulic lines and valves connect diagonally opposed pairs of shock absorbers. When cornering, the flow of fluid to the damper of the compressing outside front wheel increases, providing firmer support and reducing roll. When combined with the sports suspension plus, DRC offers a choice of three selectable damper settings - sport, dynamic and comfort - which can be activated via the MMI.

The electronic stabilization system ESP offers maximum driving fun with uncompromised safety. Its relatively high activation threshold encourages a dynamic driving style. It offers a Sport mode and can also be deactivated entirely.

The new Audi RS 6 rolls on 19-inch alloy wheels shod with 255/40 tires. Up front, six-piston fixed aluminum calipers - painted black and decorated with RS badges - clamp down on 390 millimeter brake disks. The rear brake disks measure 365 millimeters in diameter. The rear axle features single-piston floating brake calipers. The floating steel disks feature large cooling ducts and axial perforations for enhanced performance and less weight.

9.5J x 20-inch wheels are offered as an option. These allow the use of a ceramic brake system. The 420 (front) and 356 (rear) millimeter disks weigh a total of 12.2 kilograms (26.90 lb) less than the steel disks. The calipers - up front with eight pistons - are painted anthracite and labeled "Audi ceramic."

The body of the 4.93 meter (16.17 ft) RS 6 also sports a number of distinctive features that immediately identify it as a dynamic, top-of-the-line model. These include the single-frame grill, the air intakes, the headlights featuring xenon plus, adaptive light and RS 6-specific LED daytime running lights, the flared fenders and deep side skirts, the rear diffuser, the spoiler integrated into the trunk lid and the two large oval exhaust pipes.

The finest of materials and uncompromised quality

Like all Audi RS models developed and built by quattro GmbH in cooperation with AUDI AG, the RS 6 is the embodiment of power, elegance, exclusivity and perfection. The interior is adorned with the finest of materials such as carbon fiber, aluminum, piano lacquer, leather and Alcantara in tried-and-tested Audi quality.

The deeply sculpted sports seats provide optimal support and firm hold. The power-adjustable seats are upholstered in Silk Nappa leather, with leather/Alcantara and Valcona leather available as options. Bucket seats with an even more sporty emphasis are also offered for both driver and front passenger. Standard equipment includes the dual-zone deluxe automatic air conditioning plus, a parking assistant at front and rear, an RS leather multifunction sports steering wheel with flat-bottomed rim and a Bose surround sound system. A boost pressure indicator for the two turbochargers in the driver information system rounds out the instrumentation.

The options are also pure hi-tech: Audi lane assist helps to keep the car in its lane, adaptive cruise control maintains a constant distance to the car ahead and Audi side assist helps the driver change lane safely. The Audi Bluetooth car phone integrates perfectly with the driver's cell phone to make even using the phone a luxurious experience. It is integrated into the standard MMI operating system, a new generation of which is making its debut in the Audi RS 6.

The Audi RS 6 will be launched on the market in mid-October. The starting price in Germany including VAT is 105,550 euros.

For $157,000 this is a joke. Just off the bat you could get an SL600, CL550 (with money left over), Nissan GTR V-Spec (coming out), a Porsche 911 Turbo. The 4 door Porsche Panamera turbo is going to be priced around that price and at least that's going to really perform. Sorry Audi, but there is no version of an A6 that's worth $157,000. My Jeep SRT8 does thye 0-6 in 4.5 seconds so the performance #'s aren't even there. It may have 580hp, but they should have tuned it to do 0-60 in 3.9 seconds to somewhat justify this price. Sometimes I think the Audi people think they're the Porsche division.

You cannot compare European prices to US prices. The Euro is over 1.5 to the $, their prices include VAT and US prices are lower anyway. If you did this exercise with a Golf GTI it would be well into the $30's so it is meaningless.

This is from article on revised A6...."The facelifted Audi A6 will be available in European showrooms this October and will start at €34,200 (approximately $51,020) for the 2.0L TFSI sedan."

As we know the 2.0 A6 will not be sold in the USA, and the A6 will actualy start in the lower $40's for a FWD version with a larger engine than the 2.0.

All of the vehicles you mentioned are fine cars. However, the SL600 and CL600 have 510hp V12s, not as powerful as the 580-hp RS6. (The Audi has more torque as well.) You would have to get the S65 or CL65 AMG models to get more power in a Benz, and they cost well over $200,000 (tax not included). The Nissan GT-R V-Spec and Porsche 911 Turbo are 2+2 coupes, not comparable to a large sedan like the RS6. (You can also get the Audi in a wagon as well as a sedan, but I digress.) On paper the Panamera looks like it would compete with the RS6, but the car isn't in production yet.

Your Jeep SRT8 might match the RS6 in acceleration, but I don't think it can corner or break as well. Besides, the SRT8 is a SUV, not a refined luxury sedan like the RS6.

In summary, don't compare apples with oranges.

But these will be sold at lower prices in the States. Audi doesn't charge Euro-for-dollar equivalents on its imports to the USA.

Schwitz, if you subtract the VAT (Value Added Tax) which is a 16% tax added to pretty much everything sold in Germany, the RS6 is a little cheaper than $157,000...I like the RS6, but doesn't the M3, IS350/IS-F, and others have similar performance numbers with significantly fewer horses?

The M3, IS350/IS-F are much smaller cars. The RS4 competes with them directly.

I wonder why Audi chose a V10 if BMW will soon downgrade the V10 in the M5 to an 8 and downgrade the M3's V8 to a 6.

amazonPrinceIS350,

In light of escalating fuel prices, I think ALL manufacturers are downsizing their engines.

For instance, Audi decided to use a supercharged 3.0-liter V6 in their upcoming B8-body S4 rather than the normally aspirated 4.2-liter V8 that was used in the previous B7-body S4. They figured they could get equivalent power out of the smaller engine by supercharging, and get better gas mileage as well.

Another example - Cadillac will not be developinig a successor to its NorthStar V8. They will use their 3.6-liter direct-injection V6 for most Cadillacs. That engine cranks out 306 hp, only 14 less horsepower than the hottest version of the NorthStar, yet still runs on regular fuel. If they need a really big, powerful engine for ultra-high-performance models (like the CTS-V), they can use the Corvette's pushrod V8.

lets get off of audi because its not an audi RS6 its a Volkswagen RS6 they have to borrow engines from VW. BMW is independent they borrow anyones engine they make the best sports sedans. audi is taking lambo engines to make their cars faster bmw has to make theirs from scratch in which it beats out VW anyday of the week.

Your comment would be true if VW had a V10 in there individual arsenal. If you had took the time to think before you commented, as well as perform a little research prior to just spewing out misconceptions, you would know that Lambo is under the Audi division and that Audi developed the V10 for Lambo amongst other things. In addition, the 2.0 engine was developed by Audi & Borg, ALL FROM SCRATCH. It was the first engine to use direct injection & turbocharging. I applaud them for making their engines available accross the group since it benefits the company financially as well as the consumer. Times are a changing buddy, for companies to survive and be profitable, they find ways to spread costs, hence the rumors of BMW & Diamler possibly working together.

Vw bought Audi originally for their water-cooled engine technology., remember VW made air-cooled engines before? This V10 is loosely based of the Gallardo V10, which if you had any knowledge you would know is based off the AUDI 4.2 V8.

i meant they dont borrow anyones engine.

If you want your car in the shop because of blown turbos buy an RS6. If you want to enjoy a quality sports sedan buy a M5

what does that mean when bmw is putting twin turbos in all of their cars? 1 series, 3 series, 5 series, x6 and the new 7 series. oh wait, i read somewhere that the new m5 will use a twin turbo v8 as well. damn, audi did that already. what's next? bmw is going to start using supercharged 6 cylinder engines? come on dude, face the facts, bmw copies audi. remember the mmi came out before the idrive?

thats true but lets see 2 or 3 years down the line how well their turbos hold up compared to audi. and who came out with 10 cyclinder first BMW and audi was behind again. Audi had a 10 cyclinder in the lambo gallardo but they didnt put it in the audi until later down after BMW

VW is way behind BMW in technological advances as far as engines go. the only thing i think they do better than BMW's is their interior and thats about it. the overall package goes to BMW's hands down and if you are a BMW owner and all that converted from audi to BMW (and that makes 2 of my friends 3 family members) knows that bmw surpasses audi in all aspects except interior design. you show me one naturally aspirated (OH YEAH NO TURBOS IF YOU DONT UNDERSTAND NATURALLY ASPIRATED)car that audi made that will match up with bmw please let me know because they cant beat out BMW unless they have turbos right or wrong

The 4.2 V8 from the RS4/R8 is superior to any n/a BMW engine save the 4.0 from the M3. And 4.0 from the M3 came 3 years after the 4.2 from the RS4.
Not to mention the new Audi developed 5.2 V10 from the Gallardo LP560 which is superior to any n/a BMW production engine.

actually, the 335 and the S5 match up pretty well. the S5's naturally aspirated engine can smoke the bmw 335's turbocharged engine if driven correctly. wait, did i say that bmw had a turbocharged engine? wow audi has been doing that for years. you are starting to make me seem like the biggest audi fan with all this bmw crap. i like them both but damn dude, your facts are backwards.

Audiphile, I was looking at what you can get for the same price value. Yes, comparing a 2+2 to a four door sport sedan is very different, but was just making a point on how many other vehicles there are with better performance for a lot less money.
I would definitely argue braking point on an SRT8. It has 4 hole aluminum brembo brakes that can stop that truck on a dime and you would be quite surprised.
If you want to compare Apples to apples, then take the E63, M5, Upcoming Porsche Panamera, even an M3 sedan as someone else pointed out. And none are as expensive as this car.
I guess Lamborghini overcharged their own business partners for the engine to get to this selling price. Now we know why they just hit record profits this year!!!!

For reference, an M5 cost 92.5K in germany. Does an M5 cost 140k dollars in the US? I thought not.
