Now Audi is pushing the laser-lit envelope. R&D chief Ulrich Hackenberg has announced that Audi will be the first company to bring laser headlights onto the road. “We will be the first car brand to put laser light into production,” he said at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. The brand’s laser-diode technology is being showcased on the Sport Quattro Laser Light concept, which was revealed last week.

“The future—and that’s what we talk about at CES—is in laser light,” Hackenberg said. “Laser light is even sharper, safer, and more efficient. These headlamps are three times stronger than LEDs.” Hackenberg also reaffirmed that Audi’s R18 e-tron Quattro that will contest this year’s 24 Hours of Le Mans will be fitted with the lighting kit.
