Audi R8 receives 2008 World Car Design of the Year award
Audi made it a big double when the R8 was declared the 2008 World Car Design of the Year. Cars eligible for the 2008 World Car Design of the Year award are taken from the list of thirty-nine (39) World Car candidates nominated by forty-seven (47) World Car jurors from twenty-four (24) countries throughout the world.

A design panel consisting of four highly respected world design experts asked to first review each candidate, and then establish a short-list of recommendations for the jurors. Jurors then voted on the expert’s recommendations. The top three design finalists were, in alphabetical order, the Audi R8, the Mazda2 / Mazda Demio and the Volvo C30.

The jury didn't care about "heritage", they just based it on excellence of design. The R8 won hands down.

Audi is a separate company from Volkswagen, as you well know. It might currently be 99% owned by the Volkswagen Group, but Audi has a heritage that predates Volkswagen's existence. Remember the Auto Union Grand Prix cars of the 1930's?

As for Lexus - I'd rather have the Camry in my family tree than the Isetta!

By the way, BMW didn't even create the Isetta hemselves - they bought the licensing rights from the Italians. BMW had a very checkered automotive history up until the late 1960's, when it began to challenge Mercedes-Benz.

" heritage matters and the beetle and camry dont inspire any passion or excellence". What an idiot. Talking about heritage not many car makers come even close to audi, not even your beloved BMW. Read some book!

I don't think this article mentioned it but Audi's R8 has been named World Performance Car AND World Car Design of the Year.

Audi also swept the same two awards a year ago, when the new TT was named 2007 World Car Design of the Year and the RS4 honored as World Performance Car. This year, the new S5 was also among the finalists for World Performance Car.

The awards were announced by the World Car of the Year jury, which is a group of 47 journalists representing 24 countries.

The jurists noted that the R8 has "solid credentials on paper thanks to its mid-mounted 420-horsepower V8 engine and aluminum construction. But where it excels is in the exceptional balance, refinement and control that grant the driver the confidence to push to the limit. It has astonishing precision for a car of its size category."

nothing against R8, but how could it win 2008 world car design of the year when we just barely step into year 2008? the same organization might as well just award R8 for 2009,2010 and so on.

Probably the R8 won a 2008 award because, even though we are still in early 2008, all of the 2008 models have already been introduced. Six months from now a lot of 2009 models will have already made their debut.

And this is relevant because.....

I don't think their car of choice will change the fact that you don't have a clue what you are talking about.

Dear amazinBimmer - perhaps you should change your handle to cluelessamazinBimmer! Touche, Matthew1 !

If you must know, the cars I have owned are, in descending chronological order of ownership, as follows:
2006 Audi A8L
2001 Mercedes-Benz CLK 320
1997 BMW 328i
1993 BMW 325i
1990 Nissan 240SX
1984 Honda Accord
1975 Plymouth Valiant
1976 Volkswagen Rabbit

Thus I have driven both American, German and Japanese cars. If anything this diversity of ownership makes me a lot more objective than a rabid BMW fanboy with a vendetta against Audi and the entire Volkswagen Group.

I've hesitated to list what I drive because I consider it a private matter to a certain degree, and I really do not want to respond to someone with such little credibility as amazing idiot. However, I will actually list for you what I currently owne and what I have owned. Whether this is relevant, I do not think so. I will preface by saying that I hold nothing against any carmaker as long as the comments are fair and objective, otherwise I react to the comment and not the carmaker: Also, amazing idiot, I would be curious to know what your line of profession is? Your previous list of the cars you own were not exactly substantial as far as I am concerned:

Current:

Audi A8L W12, Audi S6, Audi A6 4.2 S-Line, Audi A3 2.0T S-Line (Son): Audi S4 - just purchased for him.

On Order; RS6 Sedan if arrives in US, otherwise an R8 will be ordered (waiting for V10)
Previous:

Audis: A6 4.2 (2), A8L (2), S4, A4 Avant, A6 Avant
BMW: 745iL
MB: E320, S-Class, (190E - Still in the family -love it!)
VW: Passat, Jetta
Toyota: Cressida, Corona MK II
Hyundai; Sonata (2)
Alfa Romero: Alfetta (2)
Jaguar XJ12L (Still in the family from my dad)
Jensen Interceptor - handed down from my father, but sold many years ago unfortunately.
AMC Javelin - first car. What a beast that was.

I am enthusiast of cars. My preference is clearly Audi, but it doesn't stop me for appreciating other great cars and makes. Some of my comments may be off sometimes, but they are reaction to some very bias comments at times.

Very impressive list of cars, by the way - excepting the Javelin, of course! :-)
