Audi RS5 Scoop
Audi is busy prepping three new versions of its new A5 coupe – headlined by this blistering 450bhp RS5 that arrives early next year to take on its new BMW M3 and Mercedes C63 rivals. Like all R models, the topdog A5 has been fully developed by Quattro, Audi’s in-house go-fast engineering team.

As our impressions show, the RS5 will get the full Quattro treatment. The glorious high-revving 4.2-litre V8 that powers the RS4 gets plumbed into the RS5’s nose, complete with two small and highly responsive turbochargers that will take peak power up to the 450bhp. That’s not a great deal more than the S5’s 354bhp, but the RS5 searing pace will come from its phenomenal blower-enhanced torque – expect at least 500lb ft of twist action to plateau across the rev range.

You betcha. With its quattro all-paw grip, the RS5 should scrabble to 60mph in four and a half seconds and hit an easy 155mph before the electronics call it a day. Like the S5, the hot RS5 will exploit the new A5 chassis layout, which has shifted the front axle 120mm further forward for a better 55:45 front-rear balance. But don't think that the RS5 will be a mere point-and-shoot speed weapon – Quattro waved it magic wand over the RS4, and the RS5 is expected to be just as pin-sharp to drive.

To this end, the RS5’s rear-biased quattro system will give the big coupe a more neutral handling balance. To keep the RS4 on the straight and narrow and keep a tight rein on body control, it will be fitted with carbon ceramic brakes lifted from the R8, 19inch alloys, as well as modified magnetic ride dampers borrowed from the TT. All this technology and pace will come at a price – expect the RS5 to wade in with a £53,000 price tag, in line with BMW’s £50,625 M3.

The Sportback will be the first Audi to feature QTV - quattro torque vectoring. By upgrading its quattro system with additional electromagnetic clutches, QTV will work in conjunction with braking sensors to monitor steering angle, yaw rates, road speed and torque levels. It will then apportion torque not only between front and rear axle but also between left and right wheels.

Operating both under load and during throttle lift-off – arguably when the car is at its most unstable – QTV results in a more neutral cornering stance by dialing out excess over or understeer, as well as even more effective levels of traction and agility. Other packaging highlights include a multi-functional luggage cover, which also serves as wind and sun shade and a power-operated tailgate.

WOW... The rendering looks REALLY good... Not sure about the wheels, but the rest looks AWESOME!

Must be pretty annoying being BMW with their new 420 hp M3, and then along comes Audi with a 450 hp coupe less than a year after...

But lets wait and see until Audi reveals some factory specs...

So what if it is Turbo charged? Audi build some of the best turbocharged engines out there... very wide and flat torque band... And I really don't understand why people have something against turbo engines... I can understand it if the engine is "laggy" but that is not the case with Audi engines.

And the A5 3.2FSI is actually, despite the quattro lighter than the BMW 335Ci. So that argument doesn't hold water either...

Also, Audi have already proven that they can make a car with fantastic handling!

J328Coupe, the RS4's engine isn't blown, and it makes the same power as the new M3. They're just putting in small turbochargers to keep the RS5 ahead of the pack.

Just like the 335i right? Which by chance is also blown to keep ahead of the competition.

I for one doubt it will be turbocharged.

I agree with Heyhuub- it seems very unlike Audi to turbocharge an engine, only to produce 30 more horsepower than what they got in a naturally-aspirated version. They could milk 450hp out of this engine, N/A, easily. They somehow never reach a wall with the 4.2L V8.

Exactly Bi-turbo which means it will be an incredible car. Just imagine an aftermarket chip on a car that already drops down 500ft/lbs torque... 550bhp/700ft/lbs? AWESOME!

Gotta agree with the dissenters. This article is pretty false. Better predictions:

1. RS5 and the RS4 will share the same engine/hp #'s
2. It will have nowhere near 500lb/ft of torque
3. It will not have carbon ceramic breaks

I think the magazine is a bit optimistic

Shouldn't the question be why the other two germans doesn't have something to compete with the S? Because the S sells very well. I think it is a very clever line up. It is actually a better even spread of the line up. The gap from the 335 to the M3 is quite big and for people who want something faster than the 335i but without the hardcore incar soundtrack and suspension there is no BMW alternative to the S4.

The S-series is Audi's top-of-the line while the RS are Quattro Gmbh's. Audi does not even manufacture RS-cars, Quattro Gmbh makes them in their own factory.

An RS car is way different than S. I've driven the latest RS4 and I can tell you that it's not at all the same car as S4, it just shares the same silhouette and therefore looks a lot similar to an S4.

Because BMW's lower 3series car: the 328 competes with the higher end Audi A4 (3.2) - the BMW is actually faster. The 335 competes with Audi S4 - the BMW is faster. The M3 competes with the Audi RS4 - test figures to come.

BMW doesn't need to use 2 performance letter series cars. Their 'regular' 335 already outperforms Audi's S4

One word brotha - Marketing. They staggered their line-up to offer more choices for us. What's wrong with that?

The only problem I have is after deciding on the 335, the S5 comes out, so I decide on that. Now the M3 comes out so its all M3. Now the RS5 is in the works- WTF! Audi and BMW are driving me nuts! I want that RS5!!!

go test drive an RS4 if you haven't and you'll see why the RS5 is going to be oober sexy. The RS4 is a pure driving machine and is also more than comfortable enough to drive around daily.

To the retard that made a comment about MPG for a car like this, you are completely missing the point of this car. Gas mileage is not the point. Luxury and super high performance sport is the point. If you want mpg, get a car that's built for better MPG. Or, get a lesser sport car, like a 335i coupe (a very sexy coupe as well, but not in the same class as an RS5 or M3).

S4cabriofoxone why do you keep saying Audi didn't make it? The RS4 isn't a completely different chassis using completely different parts? Well yes it has the hopped up engine, different fender, hood and bumpers, but the majority of the parts are still sourced from the same suppliers as all other Audis. It's just assembled in Quattro GMBH's factory but it is still an arm of Audi. Audi's sport division - this is not a bad thing.

i think with the rs5, is-f , c63 the m3 is no longer the king. the good thing for bmw is that people love the m3 so much that even if it isnt the fastest anymore it will still be the one to beat in terms of image and desireability not performace because with rs5, it seems m3 is already beat.
the competition is great though, let all the manufacturers battle it out and we the consumers win.
if we get annoyed at one dealership we can always get the alternative vehicle and since they are all great cars we got nothing to lose.....

Exactly. And, to add, the M3 has never really been the fastest- it's all about the handling. The C AMG was always quicker, but the M3 handled better, and the S4 was a combination of both; the RS4 kind of wiped all of them out. All four manufacturers are bringing a lot more to the table this time, though.

henbmw - The clk was timed @4.2 sec to 60 and the RS4 @ 4.3, I wouldn't count that as smoking someone, and the RS4 is quicker around the track also.

On top of that the CLK63 AMG starts at 23k more then the RS4.

NOTE- i am talking about the CLK 63 AMG , not the New CLK 63 Black, which is twice as much as the RS4.

Can't disagree with the fact that a B7 RS4 can outperform an e46 m3, but there is an age disparity. The e46 M3 came out in 2000, the RS4, 2006. Maybe wait for the new 2007/8 M3 before making statements like that.

the RS4 platform came out in 2001 as a 2002 model. The RS4 is the last of the old platform. The Rs5 will be the new tech. one year older not 6

Except you are completely wrong. He is referring to the B7 RS4, not the B5 which came out in 2001 with a twin-turbo v6. When he says "the RS4 is better than the M3?", he is obviously referring to the 2006 B7 V8 RS4, not the 6 year old 2001 B5 RS4. And this comparison, as I will say once again, is unfair. The B7 platform was introduced in the end of 2005 as a 2005.5 model for the A4. Please don't respond with false information. Thanks

BMW8ter, have you read anything about the A5/S5? The weight distribution of the new 5 series is completely different and it's even visible in the design (notice how the nose doesn't have nearly as much overhang as previous generation Audi's). More weight is behind the front tires and less in front of them. This car will be amazing. The RS4 destroyed everything in its class, but M5 got the respect only because it's BMW. The RS5 will more than likely destroy everything again, but the M3 will win because of "image". I'll say it again, but BMW is really lucky that Audi doesn't YET have the recognition that BMW does, but frankly, Audi's are just as nice (and in some cases, better) than BMW's.

jmr-

The 4.2 you used is how fast a clk 63 CABRIOLET (that means convertible) goes to 60. So we know that coupes are faster because of weight savings, probably looking at a 4.1 or 4.0, which is indeed significant for only 0-60. The quarter mile, with its huge torque advantage , the clk63 would in fact smoke the rs4. Oh and the Black series (with a modest 25hp gain over the base) did a trial lap of the Nurburgring for Car and driver in a healthy 7:45. The RS4 could only muster a 7:58. Oh and finally, the I don't know where you got the price difference because Mercedes hasn't released pricing of the clk63 COUPE, however the difference between the two is estimated at less than 20k.
