For sure. Porsche had bad reliability last year. Almost no improvement this year. It is quick but not reliable. No wonder they aren't going to Le Mans.

Probably not, but it can win the most prestigeous of motorraces! I'd like to see the hybrid that does that! The only of the prestige series where Toyota competes is Formula 1... And that is definately not anything to be proud of!

Quality u say ? The Audi brand is more about quality than MB and BMW any time. And performance too, if you look at the cars designed for performance (R8, RS6, RS4). Besides that, you don't pay that much for an Audi like for an MB or BMW, so it is supposed to fall with 2-3% overall .. but, hey, you talk about quality in the other two when Audi won for a few good years in a row not only the LeMans but also the BEST INTERIOR (as design and QUALITY). Other than this, nobody show the other two more reliable than Audi, so give me a break, will you? If you'd say something else but quality?

Nahh... The competition is just weak! Don't get me wrong. The R10 is a fantastic racing car, but there is no competition anymore! It's easy to become the king of the hill when there is no competition! Le Mans used to be the event to win, but then F1 sort of sneaked in and took the spot! All of the big teams... BMW, Mercedes, Toyota, Jaguar, Nissan and Honda all withdrew their teams within 2-3 years to concentrate their efforts on F1 and suddenly, rookie team Audi who had invested huge sums in two different cars (R8C and R8R) and refused to follow the others, loosing a lot of money and suddenly they found themselves on top of the hill without any real competition! In the "old" days a race car wouldn't have been able to go for that long without major modifications and still win! Only when the Bentley (built by R8 engineers to promote the brand) arrived, the Audi was beat. Strangely enough, the Bentley disappeared after winning a single race leaving Audi to retake their spot!
Only now is another factory backed LMP team (Peugeot) aiming their cannons right up Audi's privater parts! And unless the Audi engineers stop resting on their Laurels (like they did with the R8) and start improving their cars from season to season, they will soon be defeated!
F1 is where the real competition is. Audi just doesn't have the guts to get in the competition because they know that it won't be a walk over like LM!

What i'm trying to say here is that if suddenly BMW and Mercedes (etc.) were to reenter Le Mans and ALMS, you can be damn sure that Audi would get a run for their money!

I love Le Mans, but I don't watch it for the LMP900 class! That is boring as hell! It is the LMP600, GT1 and GT2 where the real race happens!

Whats a pity is that BMW and MB doesn't match Audi in reliability. Look at all the past reports as MB and BMW have continued to decline over the years while Audi continues to move forward.

Lexusmanica- don't talk about racing when you know nothing.

The R8 race car developed several things for current Audis. A good example is FSI. The TDI R10 is the start of TDI road cars. Give Audi credit when they do well and I will give Toyota credit if they ever win a race.

You know less about F1 than you think! Toyota has been in F1 for years with their current team. Last year was the very first for the BMW-sauber team! It takes some years to suceed in F1 (look at Renault) but for some reason, Toyota need more than some years apparently! Mentioning that BMW beat Toyota was a stupid move! A new team beats an established one! embarrasing!

LexusMoron...

Le Mans is probably the biggest single motor race event around! Toyota used to be a dominant team there (never the dominant team though)...
I consider myself a "petrol head" and watch as much racing as I can... I've visited both Hong Kong and Macau (just around the bend of HK) but I've never heard of either nor any of the other "important" races you've mentioned! You mentioned those because Toyota is there, right? Toyota is the big joke of the F1 series! Rumors are that the team has the largest of budgets in the series and yet they are only a mediocre team! BMW beat them in their first attempt as an independant team!

Stop fooling around trying to sound grown up and important! Don't comment if you don't know what you talk about! You'll just be humiliated!

People will have much more respect for you if you just shut up!

The LMP2 rule changes have made them faster than before. It is possible the LMP2 may actually be faster than LMP1 if the continue to handicap the R10.

Car Features
Auto Union Type D Christie's Auction Update
By Source: Christie's
Mar 4, 2007, 20:24

In a joint effort with Audi Tradition over the past three weeks, we have completed considerable additional research on the race history of the 1939 Auto Union D Type V12 Grand Prix Racing car originally scheduled for sale at Retromobile in Paris on February 17. Our joint research confirms that the car's chassis is frame 19, and not 21, the chassis of the 1939 French Grand Prix winner.

Regarding racing history, Audi has confirmed that chassis 19 is a genuine 1939 D Type chassis and that it was first raced by Rudolf Hasse in the Eifelrennen on the 20th May 1939 at the Nurburgring, in which Hasse finished in 5th place. It was next raced at the 1939 French Grand Prix in the hands of legendary Auto Union pilot Hans Stuck, who brought the car home in 6th place, behind the company's 1st and 2nd finishers. Audi has kindly been able to support these race results with extensive documentation.

During our now completed verification process, no alteration has been made to the car itself which we believe to be the only Auto Union to which Grand Prix racing results can be attributed.

Christie's was delighted at the response and interest that the car received in the run up to and while on view at its highly successful Eu7.2m auction in Paris. Based on our now completed research, we are accepting sealed tender bids for a period of one week today and invite prospective bidders to contact Christie's London office directly to receive applications for this tender.

I hate amazinidiot as well... But BMW didn't leave because of Audi, they left the year before the R8 first raced at Le Mans! Audi only started winning after all the other factory backed teams disappeared! They even stole their car design directly from BMW! Go look it up!
I'm not trying to bash the R8, I think it's achievements are nothing short of spectacular, but get your facts right! I am so sick and tired of people claiming that everybody ran because they were too affraid to compete with Audi! They left because of lack of interest!

The R8 and the BMW V12 LMR Only went head to head at Le Mans once! In 1999 the V12 LMR won the Le Mans ahead of Toyota in second (the Lexus fans are gonna love that) and the two Audis, the 1998 BMW V12 LM was entered by David Price Racing and came in 5. Afterwards the team was closed due to the lack of publicity and interest surrounding Le Mans. The cars was taken over by AC Schnitzer and driven as the V12 LMR at the 12 hrs at Sebring where it also went head to head with the R8... Do I need to mention who won? (Hint: it wasn't the Audi)
But due to lack of funds, the team was shut down before being able to repeat the success. The rest, as they say, is history!

sailor- th R8 in 99 was not the same as the one in 2000, after Audi lost in 99 they made a new R8, thats the one that won in 2000,2001,2002,2004, and 2005. Not sure if thats what you were saying but wanted to point that out.

Nope... I'm not going to give Audi props for something they didn't do! They win because of lack of competition! That is like the guy who did 3. grade 7 times... Ofcause he'll be the king of the playground!

Why should they be affraid of a car that lost to them?! Had BMW bothered to continue their Le Mans effort, things would look a whole lot different! But Le Mans is not the same as it used to be when it comes to publicity! That was the reason for not continueing! I even remember reading a press release around the end of 1998 stating that they wouldn't continue their LM efforts after 1999 but they still went on to win the LM that year!
It doesn't have anything to do with Audi! If you really think that, you either have your head stuck too far up Audis tail pipe or you are simply stupid... Ohh... Wait... You shouldn't by any chance work for Audi?

BTW: Why doesn't Audi enter F1 so they can scare BMW away from that again? Are they scared of BMW and Mercedes? Silly, childish argumentation!

Audi races to build better cars F1 dosen't do anything for that.

i am sure if Audi enters F1 we will hear about F1 being a washed up race.

For years I heard BMW fans say Quattro and Turbos are not for real sports cars now BMW has AWD and turbo cars they are the greatest cars.

BMW Audi is waiting for you to compete in ALMS or France where are you?

Sailor,
Oh please, last year was BMW's first year with Sauber. BMW has never been in F1 before? Did BMW team up with someone else this year to retain their rookie status? What a sorry excuse.

News to you, the TDI is already on the market. Your FSI argument is more legit.

I didn't say that they didn't have any previous F1 experience, but their only experience was with building engines! Last year they bought the mediocre Sauber team (simply because it was in F1 already) and started from scratch! And they still beat Toyota... But don't take my word for it! Instead, let's wait until the end of this season and then we can see how the score is then! If Melbourne was any kind of pointer, it doesn't look that good for Toyota... Again!

All racing is tough - who are you kidding - especially endurance racing. If BMW or Toyota were in LeMans and dominating you wouldn't see any controversy with it. The truth is that others have competed but just haven't stayed. In F1 Ferrari runs the show even though they are much smaller than the others - so what does that say??? If LeMans wasn't useful to BMW before - they sure learn from it even though they don't race. Just recently we have seen that TFSI of the previous R8 race car made it into production Audi's. All of a sudden every manufacturer wants to have direct injection engines. Yet and still only BMW could DUPLICATE AUDI by putting turbo with the direct injection in (335 and 535 came well after the 2.0TFSI). Funny how BMW used to say turbos were no good. It seems that just because they left LeMans it doesn't mean they weren't watching it. Now after the R10 I'm willing say that in the next few years - mainly outside the U.S. you will see high performance diesel cars - of course after Audi produces the first ones.

Ironically, the Toyota F1 team is German, even moreso than the Mercedes McLaren team being British. Its a big Toyota budget, but not really a big Toyota effort. (Similar with the Williams Toyota team.)

This German - Japanese thing is a little eschew.

Mr. Sailor - I posted this in another forum to a BMW booster (which by the way is my third favorite car company). Please respond intelligently sir:

Audi must be learning something in racing because the M5 has been beaten by the S6/RS4 in every comparison I've seen so far (Motor Trend-Car and Drvier-Edmunds) and now comes a daily drivers log (as opposed to track testing where the S6 again compares favorably to the M5. So what's the answer to this (after you read the link?)

Hmm... That people like the S6 better?

I'm no "BMW booster", but when people claim that Audi scared BMW away from the Le Mans i get pissed off. It just isn't true! What is true though, is that Audi stole their design for the R8R from the V12 LMR (And the R8C from Toyota)!
Had they said that they had scared off Mercedes or Toyota I would have reacted in a similar way.
The same thing applies to my posts about F1... For some reason an enormous group of people here has something against BMW... Why not mention how bad soe of the (established) teams were?! Nope, they had to go directly after BMW, even though they beat Toyota in their first season!

You also seem to be an "Audi booster" from the above post! The BMW 3.0 TT engine has nothing to do with the R8. The technology might be derived from racing, but it was Audi who started using it in cars (actually it was Mitsubishi but who cares) and BMW saw the great advantages from the STREET cars, not the raing cars. If BMW would have gotten the idea from the R8 (race car), why didn't they introduce the engine shortly after the 2000 LM?!

BTW: I have never owned a BMW, my next car might be one, unless someone else brings out a proper competitor! Actually, I would much rather have an A5... But as it looks now, they don't offer an engine that I want! The S5 will be too expensive and the 3.2FSI engine is nothing short of the worst Audi engine ever!

Now how about you? Would you ever consider a BMW or are you to stuck to that quality interior?

I like the M5 better btw. Simply because it sounds better... I have never driven either my self, so i can't say anything about their performance, but nothing can beat the sound of a V10 revving to 8000+ rpm!

Mr. Sailor - BMW is actually my third favorite car company after Porsche and Audi. My favorite car is actually the last generation 5 series. I tend to stick up for Audi the most because they are the underdogs. I agree that it is ridiculous that Audi scared off BMW - but I equally think its ridiculous to say that Audi stole the R8 design from anyone. In case no one noticed in this industry all car companies learn from one another whether they admit it or not. Audi had to have studied the competion in LeMans before they entered - that is call "having sense" - and likewise BMW learned from Audi's 2.0TFSI how to develop their own 3.0L direction. As I said in another post - you could say the same thing about the new M3 engine compared with the RS4 (high-rev concept).
