Audi launches 7-speed dsg
Audi has finally announced the launch of its version of VW Group’s new seven-speed dual clutch transmission, which will be used to replace the current six-speed units over the next 12 months. The new gearbox, dubbed S-tronic in Audi-speak, is designed to work with longitudinally installed engines and quattro all-wheel drive, plus it can handle torque figures of up to 550Nm and engine speeds of 9,000rpm.

One of the primary limitations of the older six-speed gearbox was the inability to handle torque figures higher than 320Nm, however Audi has solved the problem with the latest model.

Yeeha! I pray that this new 7-speed DSG is available on the S4 sedan when it makes its U.S. debut this fall. If my head doesn't hit the ceiling on the new S4, and this DGS is available, my car-shopping after my lease expires will be unbelievably easy!

I'm definitely eying the new S4 as well...with 550Nm capable, it ought to have DSG! Hoping for a 3.2T as well =)

Dual-clutch is a technology Mercedes should be rushing. Even its SLR supercar has a ho-hum 5sp auto. Ok, Merc doesn't want manuals but its about time they upgraded to dual-clutch.

Their 7 speed auto is very good, they still use the 5 speed auto because no other gearbox can handle the insane torque of the SL/CL 600/65 and SLR.

Yeah, even Jag's turbo V8's had to use MB automatics because their trannies couldn't handle the torque that the MB 5-spd can.

How much does it weigh compared to the DGS it's replacing?

It's not replacing a DSG, since it's for longitudinally based engines.

Audi will probably screw it up by offering DSG only on the A3 and S/RS cars.

And Oh yeah... So called enthusiasts will never give up the clutch pedal. They feel as though the entire driving experience is defined by pressing a pedal with their left foot. I'm of the opinion that manually operated clutch pedals are archaic devices

That's why Audi still offers a manual on every model except the S6/RS6 and A/S8.

And you know that the whole point of this transmission is so that it can be fitted to more than just the A3/TT. It will be introduced on the Q5 and fitted to the A4 (and hopefully S4!) shortly after.

I caught how the Nm was emphasized as well and made the same assumption.

good catch

Porsche should put a version of this in their GT3.

For the ones that didn't read the article, this will be used all across the line up except for a few exceptions such as the Q7 V12 TDI and the A8 limo, do to high torque figures or smoother shiftings.

So you can expect this to be used in almost all of their cars. And that's great news since the 6 speed gear box was very limited as it could only withstand 320 NM of torque.

This makes pretty much every upcoming Audi product that much better, way to go.

Yeah if this isn't the best transmission on the market then I don't know what is.

Has to be, givin the innovation & relatively large number vehicle to be produced utilzing it. I loved it the first time I drove the original TT 3.2...can't wait for A4/A5/S4/S5

Attach this transmission to some more competitive engines and Audi may get in the game. This is a start but team it with the 2.0T or 3.2 V6 or 4.2 V8 and yawn.

The 2.0T with DSG is fantastic--take it from me, I have one.

"may get in the game?" As if they're not already in it? The 3.2 is a snoozefest of an engine, but the 2.0T and 4.2 are masterpieces and continue to win awards.

I drove an A4 convertible "S-Line" and it drove less than stellar. I dont know if it comes with the DSG or not but I wasnt to say the least a bit impressed.

lyonboy, can you elaborate? What's not competitive about Audi engines? They each are very impressive in their own market spaces.

w209w114, if you don't even know if it had DSG, then you're the last person I'd trust for an honest car review.

VW/Audi has more engines in Ward's "top 10 engines" list than any other auto-maker. Some recent years, 3 of 10 engines are VW/Audi.

Moto, It was my friend's car and it didnt seem at all like it had a DSG (i could be wrong?) Im not an Audiphile so correct me if Im wrong, you know youre more than welcomed to. It felt more like a slushbox than anything else.

The only Audis that currently offer DSG are the A3 and TT because they are the only models with tranverse engines. This is a completely new transmission. Anyone that's driven a current A4/S4 automatic has driven the 6-speed slushbox auto.
