Audi, more than any other auto maker of the last 20 years, has been the avatar of advanced engine technologies later adopted for mainstream application
No better case makes the point than the FSI 2.0L DOHC I-4, winning a 10 Best Engines award for the third consecutive year since its launch in 2006. The power-dense, fuel-sipping FSI 2.0L – which Audi has had in production since 2004 and couldn’t be righter for the times – is the engine many auto makers only now say they’re gearing up to emulate.
Audi says it was the first to combine gasoline direct-injection technology (Fuel Straight Injection, or FSI, to Audi and parent Volkswagen AG) with turbocharging for a volume-production engine.

It's the write-up for the VW/Audi 2.0T FSI motor from Ward’s 2008 10 Best Engines list. VW has been the leader in small displacement turbocharged and direct injected motors. They came out with their direct injected motors in 2000 three years before BMW came out with one and I believe most of Porsche's new models still don't have it. Ferrari is also studying Audi's FSI system.
Tuesday, September 25, 2007
"Screaming performance and Government demands for low emissions will force Ferrari to phase in direct fuel injection within two years.
"The injection system will debut on a significant upgrade for the F430 coupe in 2009 before being grafted on to the 612 Scaglietti and then the 599 GTB Fiorano.
"The Italian supercar maker is working closely on the system with Bosch, the German supplier deeply involved in developing Audi’s sophisticated FSI direct-fuel injection system.
"Admitting it has torn down Audi’s fuel injection system to understand its possibilities, Ferrari insiders suggest that its new engine technology will allow for a 10 per cent improvement in horsepower more and at least a 40 percent reduction in emissions."

If this article were true it would make Audi's struggle to increase sales and market share (especially in the US) even more of a disappointment.

Struggle to increase sales? No matter how slowly, they are steadily gaining in the US, month by month. Expect six-figure sales this year.

They've improved every year for the last 15-ish years.

I really like the FSI 2.0L motor. It's fun to drive, plenty powerful and very economical.

what can I say.
Audi TDI has been ruling the racetrack, much like quattro did before it was outlawed. Ive been driving porsche for several years now, but i miss my S4 and will probably get an RS5.
