audi has diffrent engines for diffrent markets
they might have a 4 cyl in europe or china now

taxes in china are much higher if you have an engine over a 2.0

in Germany they have 10 engines for the A8 where we only have the V8, the W12 and the S8 V10

wait so you are saying Audi is making a 4 cyl to catch up with the LS?

Even if they were planing this engine they would never bring it to the USA They have a 2.8 in Germany and that car would never make it here

This is great, but the luxury buyers of America cannot stop associating luxury with more cylinders and more horsepower. Maybe a slightly positive result of this mess that the economy is in will be Americans rethinking their notions. Then all I need for Audi and Mercedes to do is import the 4- and 6-cylinder A8 and S-Class to America!

If they can make it 230+ hp then it wouldn't be such a big deal. But if they get lousy and offer a weaker engine than that, the car will be too slow for anyone to buy it! It's a good idea though since not everyone wants to go fast in their luxury car, but it will be a nightmare to drive on U-turns, Round-a-bouts, and so on because of the weak engine.

Has anyone here ever examined the facts? Most people opting to buy a luxury vehicle in this class are more interested in creature comforts rather than sheer performance. These cars, be it an S550 or A8 W12 are hardly ever driven to their limits. A 4-cylinder A8 is a good idea (as long as it isn't underpowered) for those who care about gas mileage and not performance while still wanting to enjoy a fullsize luxury vehicle. The A8 is also "light" thanks to its aluminum body and Audi can take measures to lighten the 4-cylinder A8 some more.

4 cylinder A8 is crazy. Even the A8 3.2 we get here in middle east is very weak. A car that can hold 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 cylinders, surely there will be many compromises.
