Audi's Entry Level A3 Out Classes The Lexus LS Self Park Feature

A clever new option on the Audi A3 Cabriolet should make parking a breeze. Not only does the Parallel Parking Assist software inform the driver if a space is suitable, it then manoeuvres the car into it automatically for you.

At speeds of up to 19mph, the A3 can scan a row of parked cars and emit an audible beep when a big enough gap is found. Once one has been selected, the system takes over full steering control of the vehicle, leaving the driver to make any final adjustments after the hands-free manoeuvre has been completed.

The Lexus LS parking feature is a gimmick. I spoke with other fellow LS owners and they said they didn't bother learning how to use it and they park faster than the system can do it. I myself, a LS owner, have never bothered with it because I trust my own parking better than a system.

I've owned the previous generation S430 so I'm used to the length and my 07 S550 is no exception either. It's also a boat of a car. So the question is do I need a parking system? no. Will this A3 need it? NO.

You have to be kidding me Agent63. You claim to have all these cars. You don't have an LS anymore than I drive an GS-F. You look like you're 23 years old in your picture.

Agent63, in addition to it being a gimmick it is a safety hazard because cars are not built to aerospace reliability standards. I hate gimicks and that is why I would also never buy a BMW with the dreaded iDrive.

Globebuena,

Like I've said countless times before. I don't have to prove to anyone online. It is after all just the internet.

I've also said what my job is. I'm into stocks and investments as well as I do RE. By the way that photo is me two years ago. I'm actually 25. Is there something wrong with me being young and doing well for myself?

At least I'm not like MT who is full of baseless information.

And by the way, because a friend of mine who owns SR Auto in the Vancouver, BC, Canada area he has taken photos of my S for portfolio purposes. http://www.srautogroup.com/technik.php?cmd=gallery&sub=473a556a2c6c4. Do I need to take a photo of myself and the car together? :D Please. I've been on this site more than you have and who are you?. Welcome to Autospies.com

Just curious, why would you get an S-class and an LS? Why not an S550 and an IS-F, or LS and an M3, or SL550 and an LS? I mean if its preference its a whole different thing, but I myself would rather have some variety. Or do you have a third car that is different?

Yes I have an 2008 R8 so it is there if I want a quick fix of speed. There aren't a lot of roads where I can enjoy it except on a local track. I've racked up around 7000km's the last time I checked so I have driven it quite often (mainly in the city though).

I have intentions of getting rid of the LS in a year or two and pickup the upcoming Jaguar XF-R but we'll see how that goes. The LS has done the job of a luxury car very well and I am at ease every morning I go to work. However, I have my S because I like to drive at night and there is no luxury car in this particular market that relaxes me this much after a hard days work. I have also thought about sacrificing the LS for a cheaper S5 as well. I test drove one a couple weeks ago and it was lively for sure and the interior bits were put together very well. With that said it doesn't mean I won't pickup another Lexus in the future. But for excitement reasons Lexus just doesn't cut it in that department yet.

So stupid. No way you have an LS and an S. Try saving up for retirement or buying your mom something nice instead of trying to show off and make up for your shortcommings.

No way I have an S and LS? I've been making serious cash since I was 22 after I received my realtor license and from there I opened other pathways such as trading stocks. Like I said I don't have to prove to anyone on this site but I contribute my thoughts and comments so we can all enjoy AutoSpies.com.

You've obviously spent your time trying to prove me wrong and for what? stop hating on someone that has nice cars. I feel very lucky to have what I have and don't take it for granted. I'm not arrogant like some out there. So as for shortcomings I'm fortunate I don't have any.

Anyways this is more about my personal life than about cars now so if you want to criticize me about my personal life pay me a visit to either Arizona or Canada where I call home :)

People that spend $73,000 on a car don't need that feature, they can afford to valet.

The feature itself isn't meant to be a selling point, it is more of a conversation features... "look what my car can do and yours can't". It really don't have much of a real-world purpose.

With the exception of the "Hold" button, most of the LS' high end features you will probably never use.

Considering the size of the Audi A3, I dont think it even needs it, but about informing the driver about a parking space, well done Audi. It is afterall a nice gimmick.

very nice feature i seen and heard the lexus self park feature needs some work ,aybe they can learn from AUDI with that.....but on the flip side if you know you cant park a car by backing up into a space why bother having a computer do it for you...just pull in normally just another costly unecessary otpion if you ask me.

The crazy part is that from what I read of this (similar to VW's system), the driver does not need to be in the car. The car can be controlled via the key. It can even pull out of a parking space by itself and the driver can then get in the car.

All Audi's self parking feature has to do to be better than Lexus is work more than 30% of the time. The option that Lexus salespeople hate most.

Ummm, the A3 is also about 1/2 the size of an LS. Give me a SMART and 17ft of space and I'll park it using just my feet (I know you'll ask, you don't need the shifter button to switch from D to N to R and back).

Would've been more impressive if VW came out with this before Lexus.

So let’s get this clear, Audi steels Lexus's idea and adds the space calculation feature to it, and we call this "out class"?

Even though the LS460 is not hard to park and the feature is just a step into introducing future technology of self drive, yet it makes sense to have it installed in a big sedan; but what idiot would not be able to part an A3?
