Audi to offer electric cars in 5-10 years
Audi, the luxury unit of Volkswagen (VOWG.DE), sees great opportunities in electric cars and will offer automobiles with no exhaust emissions within ten years, its top executive told a German weekly.

Rupert Stadler told Welt am Sonntag in an interview published on Sunday that he expects diesel and battery technology to dominate in the coming five to ten years.

"By then we will offer cars without exhaust emissions," Stadler said.

Asked if Audi was not lagging domestic rivals Mercedes (DAIGn.DE) and BMW (BMWG.DE) in the development of lithium-ion batteries that are more powerful than batteries used now in hybrids, Stadler said Audi's research capacities were larger than those of its German competitors.

"Electric cars offer great opportunities, which we have already seized on," Stadler said without elaborating.

Developing fuel-saving technology tops the agenda of Germany's car industry in an effort to fulfill stricter emission regulations and conserve fuel.

BMW has said it would decide this year whether to build an electric vehicle, while U.S. carmaker General Motors (GM.N) plans to roll out its Chevrolet Volt plug-in electric car in 2010.

Audi is just one of the many divisons of Volkswagen, and Electric Golf/Rabbit/A3 should be here in 10 years. Audi is to Volkswagen as Buick to GM. Soon there will be Volkswagen verison of the R8/Gallardo. If Audi real competition for BMW/Mercedes then they would not depend front wheel drive platforms from its Volkswagen Daddy, and cash from Porsche.

Audi is closer in worldwide annual sales to Mercedes-Benz than it is to Lexus, Infiniti, Acura, etc..

Audi is growing at double the rate of Mercedes-Benz globally and is leading the market in China by a 2 to 1 margin over BMW and even more over Mercedes-Benz. If Audi continues to price cars that undercut the competition by 5-10% while offering excellent performance, design, and craftsmanship they will grow. China will beomce the largest car market in the world in 5 years.

Audi has had higher sales in each of the last 12 years and soon to be 13th. Profits for Audi are soaring.

We will not let sick amazinbimmer and Larry hurt Audi's image.
