AutoCar Test Drives The New Almost 40mpg Audi A5
What is it?

Audi's new four-seat coupe, this time with 3.0-litre of turbodiesel V6 up front. It goes on sale in the UK in July.

What's it like?

Torquey. Sometimes, Newton metres of torque sound better than your familiar pounds feet. Like when you have a fat 500 of them under your right foot. That’s what the newly bolstered V6 turbodiesel generates in the A5 3.0 TDI, along with 236bhp.

Those 500Nm equate to 369lb ft of twist action from 1500rpm through to 3000rpm, which is usefully more torque than even the 349bhp S5 quattro V8 can unleash.

The ES is a little old ladies car.

The A5 is a chick magnet.

Right on. 6 second performance and 40mpg COMBINED? Imagine if they combined that with a hybrid system. 6s performance with 60-70 mpg.

Let's keep in mind Autocar is a Brit mag so a 'gallon' refers to an Imperial Gallon which is 1.25 US Gallons.

So change 40mpg to 32mpg for Stateside readers.

Still good but not as good as 40.

the A4 currently gets 32 mpg so I am sure the coupe TDI will be 40 mpg or better

and 40 mpg combined is close to 50 highway

If 1 imperial gallon equals 1.25 us gallon, and the data is for 40mpg (imperial gallon) Then 1 us gallon would give 50mpg.

40 UK mpg is 33 US mpg.
So expect around 45 US mpg highway.

331 that is 10 year old Audi tech? why would you like to buy 10 year old audi tech?

the V6 bi-turbo was always talked down by BMW fans "real sports cars don't use turbos" now BMW copies the A6 2.7T and old body S4 2.7T and they are so cool

service is not free it is included in the price. If it was free Will could take his Lexus into the BMW showroom to get the free service. The service is included in the price (you pay for it)

Yup, the 335 is an awesome piece of kit. Add the (almost customary) $ 1300 PROcede and it is also very seriously fast.

Almost 40? In pounds for what I paid for my car in dollars? To get to 62 half a second sooner and have a slightly more solid dashboard? I've gotten 35-36 mpg many times in my 9-3 (turbo without diesel) going 80-85 on the 401 and I-75. Typically I get 28-32 including my urban rush hour commute. And I'm not using Imperial gallons, like this article cites. I'm using US gallons which are 4/5 of an Imperial gallon. So they're talking about getting the same mileage I get. Wow! Those Germans are amazing!

Don't compare the UK price to a US price, they're very different. Things are a lot more expensive in the UK.

Oh and the A4 is is just brimming with style?

The A4 is a genuinely nice car, but then so is the 9-3, just with a little less of the quality.

Get off the high horse S4, the A4 isn't that interesting. It lacks a certain flair, especially when minus the S-Line styling package.

Hey, I owned an '80s 900 Turbo and have a huge soft spot for Saab. I just don't think they've done a very good job with their recent products- and I can't blame them. It's GM's fault.

Can't get the diesel here so what's the point? I had to trade my Audi in for the MB 320 Bluetec because I can't get an Audi diesel.
