Autobild Klassik: 1968: Audi 100 vs BMW 2000 vs Mercedes-Benz 200
I translated this from Autobild. A nostalgic comparison between three German classics from the 1960s (1970s). For more pictures and the English translation please visit the link to Carspin. :-)

The Mercedes 200 is actually a W115 because it is a 4-cylinder. W114's was the code for 6-cylinders.

Absolutely right. I should know better having one (1973 280) Although the 5 cylinder diesels were also classified W115s.

Agreed. The W114 is a classic.
And GoObama, the LS600h is overrated junk.
Real-world tests have proven that its gas mileage is no where near what Lexus claims.
And I'm pretty sure in 1968, NO automaker had the technology to make cars that are as advanced as models from today.

That must of neen one sick BMW 2000 because back in the day neither the Mercedes(any model) or 100LS could touch the BMW as far as US models are concerned.

Comments like these should call for your immediate removal from this forum. Navigation systems on a 67 Model? When was your lobotomy done?
Members of autospies join me in deboosting GoObama. Maybe if he gets into the -20s a light bulb will go off in the head of the Agents.

This further proves that GoObama is a useless troll. Who else would like for him to be banned?

Great historical review. Thanks for the article! It is nice to see these classics and to realize how the car has progressed since the. What is interesting in this article is that one can ascertain a historical perspective of these marquees. I love these old German classics (simple and plain), and they are only from the sixties! Whoa, I guess we are getting old.

no BMw has or shoudl ever lose to a POS VW. different league. badge engineering at its worst, and crappy FWD wannabe cars, that even then were slab sided and heavier. could never match the grace of a bimmer or the class of a MB..

MB 95 HP 0-50 in 4.8s

The Audi had the least horsepower, yet it was the fastest. Why? Because it was very light.
You should read before you judge. Stereotyping things is just plain ignorant.

Wow! Do you have this phrase copied, and then everytime an Audi article comes up you just paste? Your addition to the topic is absolutely worthless as are the majority of your posts.

According to Road and Track magazines from the 60's those acceleration numbers are way off.
1968 MB 250 0-60 13.8 automatic
1968 BMW 2000 0-60 10.7 manual
1969 Audi 100 0-60 13.6 manual
I drove all those cars back then and the BMW was by far and away the best except for ride which the Mercedes was best and the Audi was the roomiest and most modern looking to me. Mercedes engines that were not fuel injected had awful driveabilty, Audi passable and BMW ran fine.

Thanks for that post, Wimmer. I still love the old classics like these, although generally prefer the next generation up, when they got a bit more sophisticated but had not yet become super-complicated and technology-laden. I've never driven any of these, but would really love to see what it's like.
Right now, I'm sort of borrowing a friend's 1985 BMW 735i for a few weeks. That's a late model of the first 7 Series, and it's amazing how relatively simple it is. It's a bit up there in miles at 165K, condition is good, but it doesn't drive quite as beautifully as I expected. Fantastic engine and nice firm steering (although getting a bit shaky), but I think the springs need work and the driver's seat is a bit shot (springs too, I'd guess), so it compromises the drive.
As for Goobama, I think he's got to be putting us on. Just cannot be real.

My preference was BMW, MB then Audi. Road and Track went MB, BMW and then Audi. Of the cars I drove back then the BMW had the smoothest engine with the best response, I have never heard anyone say the 2002 was rough or course. The fuel injected MB had great driveabilty. I own a 1970 280SL that runs strong and smooth so I do not get what you are talking about. Audis had bad driveability until the got EFI in 1975.

GoObama, go sit in a corner somewhere and shut up. If I were Barack Obama I would be supremely embarrassed that someone like you was showing support for my political campaign through their screenname on a blogsite of any sort. Lexus is not the greatest thing on Earth and you yourself seem like the kind of person who couldnt even afford a lexus better yet know what the hell you are talking about when you make comments about them. Either leave or keep your baseless rediculous comments to yourself and family.
