Autocar reports BMW 335i coupe still more fun to drive than Audi S5
Autocar has just driven the Audi S5. They were happy with interior layout and ergonomics (which is to be expected when reviewing an Audi for interior execution). The car is supposed to be far sportier than the Audi S4 thanks to a front axle setup that is more forward caused by a new suspension, all-new steering and rearward torque bias Quattro system,
The S5 is powered by the same 4.2 liter V8 found in the S4 and has gobs of grip and traction for tight turns. The Quattro adds stability and the V8 sings a beautiful melody.
The S5 has a classy exterior and interior design along with quick acceleration, a wonderful exhaust note and Quattro for added stability and grip. This seems like a great car
Unfortunately, the car drives more like an S4 than the awe-inspiring RS4.
How does it stack up against the BMW 335i coupe? Not well.
The Audi S5 is going to be at least $10K more than the BMW 335i for msrp. The 335i is almost as fast as the S5, more practical and STILL better to drive than the Audi.
Audi has a major problem on its hands if the upcoming all-new A4 is to be based on the A5 coupe.
Unless Audi can manage to successfully change the S5 into a dynamic high-powered monster RS5 in the same way they changed the Audi S4 into the brilliant RS4 the upcoming BMW M3 will still prove more fun to drive.

I'm willing to bet that the RS5 will be better than the RS4. I'm curious if they're going to build the RS6 as well, especially if they build the RS5. If I'm not mistaken, the A6 is still on the old platform...so that means they'd be working off a chassis that doesn't handle as well as the new one.
Anyway, as much as I'd like to see a RS6, I think the A6 looks a bit too elegant to turn it into a RS6...but that's just my opinion.

Audi is already in the process of testing the upcoming RS6 on the Nurburgring. pictures have been circulating all over the internet.
The car will feature a 540+ horsepower twin-turbo V10. Bye-Bye BMW M5 in the straights.

Actually the most recent news is talking 650bhp out of the blown V10. Audi is just out of control!!! Hope it comes state-side, but expect close to 6 figures for all that power.

Both the 335i and S5 are probably worlds more fun to drive than the IS-F...

One thing for sure is that the Is-F will need every thing magic trick it can pull, because the look alone already did it wrong. Man! this car is ugly for a luxury sport sedan.

hey, please everyone stop responding to lexusking when he talks BS like that, for he will either get bored and leave us alone or get himself some common sense and start discussing things more seriously... I mean even my 14y old brother has a more elaborate opinion...
All of us could make assumptions, like the fact that the M3 and RS4/RS5 will destroy the IS-F, which is less far fetched given the history, and the actual performance of the 335i/IS 350, and the RS4... But we hold these thoughts to ourselves, or at least express them as such, for logic and argument's sake!

Very interesting. BMW did a great job with the 335i and so did audi with their S5, but I guess the 335i is the winner here...

There is little doubt the S5 will be nicer aesthetically, on both the interior and exterior, compared to the 335i. BUT, it is not contest in terms of which car is more fun to drive. The BMW 335i is the clear winner. While the S5 might be a hair faster, stock, the BMW, with the most minor modifications (chip tuning) will allow it to be much faster than the S5, both from 0-60 and in the upper speed range.

And i guess the Audi A6 has some sort of device that prevents it from being modified as well ??
I do not get your post.
335i is Twin Turboed and can be chipped
S5 is NA and can be Chipped also
335i is slightly smaller than S5 and is slightly slower and yet the reviewer states "the 335i is more practical" ??
Ill beg to differ.

I95SPEEDINGTICKETS - yes you can chip a N/A engine like the S4/S5, but you might get an extra 10-15 HP, while chipping a twin turbo like the 335i could get you around 50+ HP. Plus the increase in torque for the Twin turbo could be 70-80lbs more

I agree. S5 looks like a gem, but 3 Series, with its genuine RWD chasis and brand-new engine, drives better. However, I'd say it's fairly close-matched- both are beautiful on the outside (inside is a bit different), and both have exhilirating performance.

CommonSense, you have a Vishnu 335i? Nice! I like Vishnu's work because it looks completely unassuming from the outside... and it also appears that you got some great numbers out of it. I would be surprised if a 380hp, 3500lb BMW coupe WASN'T faster than my car!

You should be that far ahead, with 40Hp more and over 100lbs tq more you should kill the S4.
1800 is alot for a chip, my friend has a B5 S4 2.7TT, his chip was only around 600 from APR, and gave hime around 60Hp more, not sure about the torque, but it was alot. He's pushing around 500Hp now, with all the other mods he has, thing is a beast.

I would jusy buy the 335i over the M3 and chip it, put a new exhaust and maybe a testpipe , with that your probaly pushing 380HP to 400Hp and alot more torque then the New M3, probaly over 400lb feet of torque and you would be saving 15k+ after mods.

Going to have to buy an aftermarket LSD though. I seriously considered the 335 Coupe (and chipping immediately)as my next car but after seeing that it does one wheel burnouts and has zero traction with the traction control off and struggles with traction with it on, I can't see myself getting to into it.
One thing I will bring up is that BMW appears to be folloing Audi nowadays. First they dumped a twin-turbo 6cyl when Audi had that back in 2000, now the new M3 has a V8 when Audi had that back in 2004. EH who cares though, both brands are my favorite. If I don't go for the New M3, I'm getting that RS5 with the bi-turbo V8. Can you say 500ft/lbs torque and 450bhp!!!

...but it will have a much better seats (can you say Recaro?), an overall interior befitting of a 50K price tag (imagine that), more room in the back judging by the photos, AWD for (practical) corner sticking in any weather, a dual clutch option, probably a better sound system... what else... oh, and a NORMALLY ASPIRATED V8! The "fun to drive factor" will be close enough; and I beg to know the BMW’s edge in "practicality." They’re both coupes. Drivers looking for practicality need not apply anyway. I still love the 335, and even think it still has a slight edge in exterior sexiness; but all things considered, gimme the S5.

I agree. I don't see what the point of them saying the 335 was more practical. How??? As you said - no one buys a coupe for practicality. I am interested to see what the price will be between the two though. I am also interested to see how much faster the M3 will actually be... Sidenote - I think Nissan/Infiniti cheapens what it means to drive a 300hp car by giving the G37 330hp in a car that is under $40k. What next is the question. The Lamborghini president is in this month's Automobile Magazine and he is quoted as saying that the future in performance cars is not going to be about horsepower - but bringing down the weight of the vehicles etc.

I don't think the A4 has had any trouble selling in the past. The fact that the A5 is new and improved over the sedan means it will only sell more. As much as we argue over them, I doubt fickle car buyers would be swayed by what the magazines say.

i was under the impression that the a5 was to be a 6 series competitor, since its bigger than the a4 (and the 3 series) and its built using a6 components. a gallardo v10 in the rs5 would be a nice competitor to the m6.

no its a 3 series competitor. The S5 is bigger then the current A4, but not by much. The New A4 will be on the same platform as the A5. The New A4 will be the same size as the A5, it has nothing to do with the 6 series at all, its not its competition.

Pretty much it. They used stock photos. Any one that actually drove a new vehicle would put up some unique photos. And as I said before, no othere media person has driven the A5/S5 yet. It look like this review consists of some press release specs and some made up bs. First real drives will begin in May. I will post up the real articles when they come out.

I wouldn't take too much from this mini article to be honest. In the UK Autocar is well know for being VERY biased towards BMW. A few people on a forum (tyresmoke.net) I look at in the UK have sat in the A/S5 at Geneva and had no problem sitting in the car in the front and back without moving the seat so on the space comment alone thats a bit false to say the least.
The S5 is very light almost as light as the new M3 with the carbon fibre roof so I doubt its going to be a handling disaster, only time will tell. I'd wait until EVO a very well respected magazine in the UK has reviewed it first. Autoexpress have got a first drive in as well if you have a look. However in saying all that the engine in the 335i is something else and light with it.

First of all non of you have driven it yet and the one that was tested was a pre production model so lets not assume anything yet. The styling on the Audi hands down is much nicer than the BMW. Sorry BMW you have lost me as a fan. The AUdi is roomier and the SEATS BLOW BMW AWAY. The Recaro's rock!!!! Remember it also has awd that means I can drive it in the snow. Can't say that with a 335i coupe. Bottom line for me is I will test drive it the day it hits the dealership. It looks like the real deal!!

have any of you sat in the back of the 3-series coupe? I am 6'2" and my friends fit comfortably behind me and he is 5'10" ... Actually, the 3-series coupe is bigger in the back seat than my 2006 330xi. Compared to the Audi/ A4 ( my brother had a 2006 A4 ) the BMW is alot larger in the rear seats. I havent sat in the A5, yet but I find it hard to believe that it is going to be any larger inside than the BMW. I love my 335 coupe and it is hands down the best looking coupe on the road. I have the sports package and loaded ... Exterior wise, at least from the pictures, BMW is better looking with much better continuity from front to rear than the A5. Interior, edge goes to Audi cause it is a more luxurious interior. Overall, I would say BMW 335 is the winner. Performance, value, style, appeal and cost make it a sure winner. I am surprised that the S5 will be as much as it will be ...

I'd like to see a thorough comparison test. I ordered the 335i and am definitely concerened about the reliability issues, e.g fuel pump etc (many owners take their cars into the shop on a monthly basis). Never had a problem with my Audi...but then again the Audi is much less exciting to drive...

as beautiful as the S5 is inside and out, i'd still take the 335i.
also, has anyone else pointed out how illogical this comparison is....the A5 should compete with the 335i (and it clearly doesn't in performance terms) while the S5 should compete with the M3 (and i'm not holding my breath for the outcome of that comparison!).
so even though it's very good looking, i don't see the new 5s posing a major threat to the 335i or the M3.

Hmm.
I have replies.
In the past, there has been a LOT of confusion over the placement of "S" cars. They have never quite matched up with M/AMG, but "RS" seemed to leapfrog them both.
In this case, the S5 has a true target. It's not an "in-between" any more. The A5 3.2 will compete with the 328i, the S5 will compete with the 335i and the RS5 will compete with the M3.
And, not a major threat? I'd judge by the RS version. In terms of performance, the A4 wasn't a "major" threat until they somehow turned the RS4 into a Porsche-slayer. I'd bet my bonus that the RS5, being a swifter, lighter, two-door version, will be even better. Don't you worry-- M3 will get a good fight from these cars. It would be too hard to choose between them!

Audi's quattro subsidiary needs to offer its RS variants in a full model cycle (4 to 5 years) to be considered a true M3 competitor. As long as Quattro Gmbh puts out a RS model in limited quantities and only at the end of a model cycle the 'S' cars will be seen by the public as Audi's answer to the BMW 'M' cars.

The S5 is better looking and the interior is much better design wise (and probably also quality wise), but I would be surprised if it was better handling than a 335Ci... The BMW is made with handling as the main goal, the Audi will probably offer a little more comfort at the expence of a little of the handling. I don't care... I'd still rather have the A5... Yes. Autobild actually drove the car. They have real pictures. The Autocar article just has some stock pr photos and some bs. This is the quote from the German Autobild publications (no bias here I am pretty sure)
"With a completely new propulsion principle, which we find in the future with all AUDI with longitudinal engine, the A5 is to move yardsticks in things driving dynamics. Freely translates: BMW can pack up."
Funny stuff happens when you actually drive the car and don't make up some bs.

4Car did a review on the A5 and it was very dissapointing. They did not like the styling saying it was a clash between Audi's usual calculated proportions and Italian exotic mixed in one.
The engine was still nose heavy.
Looks like Autocar and 4car have had quite negative reviews of the car.
The 335i has not had a single negative review about it.

Did they drive, or use stock photos again. Check out the A5 reviews with actual photos, very positive reviews there.

AmazinBimmer, excuse you on your comment. The Audi R8 is more fun to drive than any BMW out there.
This includes the trademark M3 as well as BMW's M5 and M6.
I'm sorry, but there is absolutely no way a 420 hp V8 mid-engined car that can get from 0-60 in 4 seconds flat is less fun to drive than a front-engined sedan with 500 horsepower or a front-engined coupe with 500 horsepower or a 414 hp sedan again with a front-engine.
Audi simply has BMW beat in the fun to drive factor with the R8.
Read the reviews, the Audi is nail-nightingly close to the iconic Porsche 911 for capability and feedback.

CLK is a 6 series competiter not 335 or a5 ,S5 is audi sport's model(not audi gmbh) 335i is BMW normal road car. What size engine is in the new 328?Here we go from 325i(2,5) to 330i(3,0) and now 335i.

What they took from Lamgorghini(sorry learned) they put into the R8.They messed around with the gallardo to help with sales of the R8.Watched Tiff take one on the road at launch and was dissapointed with it(Lamborghini) and would rather have a f360, Jason plato took an Lambor SE on track and said he wouldn't spend his own money on it(gallardo SE). I would rather have GT3 than a R8.

Just because it's mid engined doesn't mean it will be more fun than a f/r car, it could have too much oversteer or too much understeer and just be scary.

Pricing wise I'd say the A5 3.2 competes with the 335i & not the S5. The S5 will probbably be priced 8 to 5 grand cheaper than the M3 with the RS5 coming in at 8 to 10 grand more than the M3.

AUDI RS5. 450bhp Bi-Turbo and 500ft/lbs torque! After seeing this, I no longer think I will be getting the New M3, much less the one wheel burnout 335i. INCREDIBLE!!!
