Autoweek drives the new A4. Verdict: Audi greatly improves the dynamics
Here is a write-up about a first drive by Autoweek in the new, B8 Audi A4. Autoweek clearly mentions, like Autocar, that Audi has created a hugely improved A4 due to massive improvements in four distinct areas

First the exterior looks more sporting than the current A4. The 12 LED lights really attract attention to the car and help people identify the car as an Audi, day or night. New aggressive rims make the car feel much sportier than the B7 version.

Second the interior is a huge improvement over the B7 A4. For those of you that are wondering how Audi could improve on an already class leading interior, well the answer is they took the interior from the A6 and A5 and placed it into the A4. The interior has typical first-rate Audi materials, ergonomics, feel and layout.

Third the car has grown by 6 inches in length. This makes the interior much larger than the current A4 and occupants will clearly notice the difference in size, especially rear passengers who often complained about the small leg and headroom in the B7 A4.

Lastly, Audi's number one goal in designing the new A4 was to improve the dynamics of the car. They hit the mark, dead on with this new B8 version. The car has much better ride quality, is more balanced, has a huge resistance to understeer and is just a better driver's car than the car it replaces.

Looks like another review confirms that Audi has created a spectacular car with the new A4 and the future looks even brighter for a brand on the move.

The lease on my A8L expires in December 2008. I don't need that big a car anymore, so I'm seriously considering the Audi S5 or A5. However, if I can't fit in that coupe (I'm a bit on the tall side), this new A4 will be my fallback preference. This review is most encouraging.

Based on looks alone:

A4 sedan > C-class sedan > 3 series sedan

meh I think it depends on individual's taste.
I really like the C-class exterior but not the interior.

I thought the C was the best-looking car in its class- but not anymore, not now that I've seen real pictures (in the AUTOCAR article). The A4 is beautiful. The current model is fine, though it's slightly bland in non S-Line trim, but the B8 is easily the best-looking in class, IMO. C-Class and IS round out the top three...

For anyone who had doubts:

"As for the interior, well, it’s just fantastic. The comfort level is incredible, and the quality of the materials appears top-shelf. It has a more expensive look than a car at this price, and the sensation of touch is reminiscent of uber-high-quality features. We can unequivocally say that Audi’s string of gorgeous interiors continues unbroken."

The European A6 looks exactly the same as the American one.
Slightly larger number plate holder, but that's it.

I don't know if I found the shot you were looking at, bulldogz, but I saw this:

http://www.audiusa.com/audi/us/en2/new_cars/Audi_A6/A6/media_gallery.0004.html

It is a shot of the A6 Avant's left rear taillight. That's the only part of it that looks similar to the A4--the Avant got horizontal lamps, while the sedans' are more like the last-gen A6's.

The A6 Avant is the sexiest wagon on the market, especially in S6/RS6 guise. I highly recommend it. As for the A6 sedan? Well, let's just say I wouldn't buy one- but I love the S6/RS6. I think the normal A6 deserves better engines, though I was surprised when I had the A6 3.2 quattro in Los Angeles. It pulled better than I expected. The interior, of course, is gorgeous.

I must say i think it looks boring in pics, may change when i see it irl.
The interior if as like the a6 it will be a step back, the new a6 has a cheaper interior than the model it replaced.

No, it does not. Have you read a single review? They may not look amazing in pictures, but when you actually sit in these cars, the interiors are beautiful. I owned a last-gen A6, and I have driven the new A6, and it is much better.

"New aggressive rims make the car feel much sportier than the B7 version." This is somewhat misleading. The B7 was offered with 235/40-R18 summer performance tires if you chose the sport option. The superb suspension and quattro awd made it a very impressive vehicle in its day, despite the classic Audi understeer. What DOES make the A4/B8 more sporting is not the wheel package, but the improved balance. I strongly disagree that they hit the mark "dead on" (that is the R8 model!), but among compact touring sedans, the new A4 is better than ever. For all practical purposes on public roads, it is completely equivalent to the sporty handling of a BMW. On a dry track, an expert driver might prefer the BMW 3-series or, yes, even an IS. But the handling limits of the B8 are greater than any A4 to date, and of course the quattro awd system continues to make it the best all-season car in its class, bar none.

Yes, the interior really is that good. Nobody executes a vehicle interior any better at this price.

I LOVE Audi's and have been waiting patiently for the new A4 however the rear end seems so bland. Lets face it, the 3 series, C Class and the new A4 are a letdown from behind. I just hope it looks better in person.

Very nice car that has a weak engine. 265Hp? Audi always finds a way to make their non-s and non-rs cars the weakest cars in their class. Is350=306hp, 335=300hp, G35=300hp. How the heck can Audi compete when the competition has much more powerful engines? I'm tired of Audi making nice cars with great interiors, only to be let down by having an engine that is the weakest in its class. Nice work Audi. I think I'll get an Evo 10 instead.

THe A4 3.2 competes with the 330i and C350

theres no 330i, at least in the US.

It's above the 328i and below the 335i. Its closest US competition is probably the C350.

The US is not the world. Europeans are getting the 330i, and that's where the A4 and 3 Series sell the most.

However, a new bi-turbo V6 is apparently in the works. I was dumbfounded when they dropped the 2.7T; I hope it has at least 300hp.

no matter how you look at it the non turbo engines are must more reliable

I am sure that has something to do with it
