BMW 118d: One Clean, Green Driving Machine
If BMW's new 1-series is anything to go by, the future's very bright indeed. Not only does it produce minimal CO2, it handles like a dream, says John Simister.

By the end of the decade, new cars must produce, on average, no more than 130g/km of CO2. Currently most cars emit rather more than this, to the joy of plant life across the world, and some will still do so even after the EU-mandated target is met (assuming it is).

I never thought this car would look so classy in white. This is simply beautiful and stunning - even though the 1-Series doesn't do much for me from a design perspective. It does look great in white.

The U.S desperately needs cars like these here. I wonder why they don't get diesels here...the EPA be damned.

It isn't the EPA. It's your fellow Americans. No one will buy diesels here. VW and Mercedes can sell a few. Ford, GM, Chrysler, the Japanese all tried in 1981-1984 (when adjusted for inflation prices were similar to now) and couldn't get anyone to go for it. Part of the reason is that GM rushed it's diesel to market (surprise) and it was plagued with problems (shocked yet?). They had the problems fixed relatively quickly, but not in time to reverse the image of diesels as being unreliable. The reason GM's problem became the industry's problem is because GM was still selling close to half of all cars sold in the US & Canada at that time. Jeep just tried again and after an abysmal year called it quits.

That white with those wheels actually do wonders for this car. I'll admit that.

so here's the choice.
need a greener people mover: buy a prius.
want a fun to drive car that's environmentally sound: buy a 118.

to each his own.

give credit where credit is due xero.

Listing CO2 emission only for a diesel engine is seriously misleading. How about its toxic Particulate Matter emission?

It has a standard particulate filter, reducing particulate matter to very low levels (apparently cleaner than the air it takes in).

How can you drive this thing guilt free when a Prius only puts out 104g/km?

The UK should ban any advertising for this car if it so much as mentions emissions.

how can you drive an RXh 'guilt free' when most people are getting mid-20s mileage?

the only guilt free thing to do is walk or ride a bike. everything motorized burns petrol.

this car will never make it to california. and remind me how this thing can be fun. lets stop pretending theres a car that can do it all. if you want a fun car, get a petrol 2 door sports car. save gas? get the slowest, lightest barge possible.

why won't it make it to california? the much larger bluetec mercedes GL, E, ML and C are coming to california in '08 and '09.

and some people want to have a little fun, not spend a fortune AND get good gas mileage. there are a number of cars that do this. so why can't BMW?

simple. because you KNOW this bmw cant be had for cheap. plenty of 2 door roadsters with gas engines that are faster and just as fun and...cheaper. if you must have the best fuel economy bmw though, i guess this is your answer. but let me warn, a diesel is not what its cracked up to be. the 3.0 twin turbo diesel, yes. 118d? no.

Have you driven the 118d? Because all I hear from european magazines is how good it is and that it feels much more powerful than it is and how good value for money it is, considering that this is a BMW!

But you are probably right, it won't make it to california... Simply because it is one of those globe killing diesels!

gsh:

the 118 can't be more than mid-20s in the US market as the 328i starts at $32,000. that's not expensive. a fun little mazda speed3 starts at $22,900...so your argument about better cars for less doesn't hold water. you just hate BMW so much that you can't admit they do anything right. thankfully, 1.2 million buyers a year disagree with you.

This car will be overpriced simply because its BMW. This pricing strategy has worked in the past, it will work in the future. There's no shortage of Euro-wannabes who will overpay for anything that has the right name.

I just noticed the headline states "CLEAN", not cleanest. Atleast the title is accurate for once.

As opposed to the artificially under-priced/incetive japanese cars, thanks to the curency manipulation of the central bank of Japan ?!

How about Toyota/Japan switching to the Euro as their curency ?!
