BMW 3 Series Facelift in Cold Weather Testing!

In order to meet the competition of the new Audi A4 and Mercedes C-Class, BMW are working on a facelift for their bestseller, the 3-Series.  It’s important to keep the 3 series looking fresh for some more years to come before the all new 3 series will arrive.  With the facelift the front and rear bumpers will change, and also the front lights and the rear lights. The engine hood is also disguised so it is probably also going to get a new shape.  Also the side mirrors are different.

This exterior changes together with some news inside, both technical and cosmetically, will try to keep the 3 series still running well against its competitors.

I really hope they give it an all new dash design. Especially the non iDrive version. I think that iDrive version isn't much better. They both need an update.

This would be the first refresh for the E9x - First year was 2006.

I wish the taillights were more like the coupe's, but if they maybe get rid of the cheesy white portion it will look much better IMHO.

Completely agree. Without that white portion it would have a nice L shape to it like the old ones did. Color the top part of the outer portion white...what an improvement that would be

are these changes going to be applied to the M3 sedan as well?

I doubt it, because most of the differences are in the front fascia, and the M3 sedan is completely different in the front from the normal E90.

youre right S4, the refreshed 3 series sedan will probably be a toned down version of the M3 sedan, so this makes me think the tailights will stay the same, even though BMW has gotten negative remarks concerning their look.

My guess is they will take the lipstick off the front grill of the sedan and make it look like the coupe as well as the headlights. Other than that, not much else will change. I doubt the interior will look different too, maybe just new trims and colors. However BMW really did a fantastic job on the refreshed 5-series interior.

I hear what youre saying, but I like the current 3-series mirrors as they remind me of the oval shaped mirrors on the previous M-cars. This is why they changed the new "M3" mirrors to that wing design.

And the X-Type is some superlative example of best in this class right Jag xfr? Who buys an X-type yet alone a Jag unless you are totally ignorant of cars.

Scrap this front-end completely and put the front fascia of the 3-Series coupe onto the entire 3-Series range, please BMW!

They will most probably do that. Look at the E90 M3.

I agree with BullDogz. BMW needs to change the tailights of the 3 series sedan. The tailights make the sedan look more like a toyota, but the coupe looks like a beast. The overall design of the 3 coupe is just sexy. It makes the car so much better looking.

Well, I'm not sure these are facelifts. The front clip is only very slightly different to the current E90 and I see no change in the rear.

The current belief is that the sedan will get the coupe's front end in 2009.

Pllleeeeease change the rear end of the sedan.. Seriously detracts from the looks of the entire car in my opinion. The rear of the coup is absolutely beautiful.. just copy that.

it needs a buttlift. 3 series sedan got one of the ugliest rear end. Front end is fine.

same is true for the 1 series coupe. I know it's brand new but that thing desperately needs a new rear end.

Looks like they've definitely changed the kidney grill to be like the coupe's, which is a good thing in my opinion. You can see the change in the third photo where the cladding doesn't completly cover the top of the grill.

They should work on reliability. I could care less about a new face-lift....just give me a reliable BMW/German car that spends less time in the shop.

They are reliable, and they're continually working on improving their quality. There's no perfect car though.
