BMW 335d and X5 Diesel to be launched in mid October
We have just received official confirmation that the most awaited BMW 3 series diesel and the X5d will be available to us in the States in mid October. The BMW 335d and the X5 xDrive35d are getting BMW's dual turbocharged 3.0L inline six diesel starting this fall. The 265-hp, 425-lb.ft. torque monster will make these vehicles among the most fuel-efficient and best performing vehicles in their class.
So, for those of you waiting to take advantage of the diesel torque, the wait is almost over and soon enough you'll have the chance to purchase one. I was also hoping that we will have some news on the 535d which we have already seen being tested in Michigan last year.
No pricing has been released yet, but we were told that we should get some more information in the next couple of months.

BMW began producing diesel engines back in 1983. Today, around 67% of bimmers sold in Europe are powered by a diesel engine. The 3.0 liter diesel has been a raging success in Europe with its 265 hp and 425 lb-ft of torque available at just 1,750 rpm and has won the
Engine of the Year award multiple times.

Audi also has diesels coming. The 500 h.p. Q7 V12 TDI will be an unbeatable combination of power, fuel economy and practicality.
I hate the wasteful shipping of our surplus diesel fuel to Europe while they ship their surplus gasoline to us in North America. The refining process produces both fuels so our cars in North America should be diesel versions in proportion to the type of fuels produced locally instead of wasting additional energy shipping the stuff across an ocean.

I know all the germans make great diesels in Europe and have for years. I was disappointed with Audi since they seem to want to try to pioneer diesel in the US, but BMW is going to not only beat them, but offer it in the 3 series as well.

Let us not forget the 2-liter twin-turbo diesel, BMW has housed in the 123d boasting a power output of 204bhp which is the first all-aluminum diesel engine in the world with more than 100 hp output per liter.

Audi will eventually be the number one desired luxury German brand. BMW cars are overpriced and get door dings in parking lots because they lack strategically positioned protective side molding. Audi has more comfortable seats, better interiors and a superior Quattro AWD system with a TorsenĀ® center differential.

Audi has more comfortable seats and a better interior? Yeah right. Audi isn't comfortable at all, especially compared to BMW. Audis have weird ergonomics. Plus, the interior isn't laid out symmetrically and it isn't user friendly. BMW is much better than Audi.

Audi's diesels are smoother and quieter than BMW's.
The A4 3.0 tdi is faster than even the 335d, despite the fact the BMW is more powerful and has twin turbos, rather than the Audi's single. Where does all that power go?

You are correct, this site is full of mindlss haters, but let me take a stab at why rupert ws deboosted. "The A4 3.0 tdi is faster than even the 335d" What does he mean by faster? Engine output at the wheels or actual real word accelration, because the 335d trumps it in both. In more than one test the 335d pulls a 0-60 of 5.5 to 5.7(much faster then bmws own conservative time of 6.2, but thats normal for them, the 335i is rated at 5.3 and insideline got 4.8 with an auto) In Autocars test of the 335d, a 400hp+ vauxhall (0-60 5.0 seconds), Subaru STI ( 0-to 60 4.8s), Audi S5 (0-60 5.0) and a supercharchared 420hp jag s type, The 335d destroyed everysingle one of those cars to 100, except the petrol S5. Only after 120, was vauxhall able to catch up and pass the 335d, which lagged a car length to the audi S5. The fastest time to 60 i was able to find for audi a4 3.0 tide was 6.1, and thats with and dont forget thats audis all wheel drive system which oes wonders for the 0-60 times but saps querter mile tomimes. So to say that the a4 3.0tdi is faster than a 335d is pretty subjective and not based on facts.

I mean faster in terms of given 0-60 times. BMW claims 6.1 for the 335d, Audi claims 5.9.

I love this concept. The more diesels the merrier. A 335d would absoultly be my next car. I used to own a 3 series an I miss them quite a bit. And to have it with diesel power and cost savings would just put it over the top. I have heard from a local Audi dealership, that Audi is bringing the diesel over in the A5 (which I really like)and I'm assuming it would be comprable. So my heart would be torn between the two.
Really tough decision to make : )
....On a side note I do find it funny that only 2 of the 3 german brands are being compared here. Have to have one person mention mercedes. Especially since MB released last week that it will be producing a comprable 4cyl turbo diesel for its C class that will make it over to the states.

Here is one little caveat in all of this. That is the price of produced diesel fuel in the US. It's currently over $4.00 a gallon and likely to go higher. In fact the spread over regular gas is app 60 cents a gallon.($15.00 on a 25 gallon tank)Further when you factor that the average cost of the vehicle over it's gasoline counterpart is roughly $1500 to $2000 diesel all of a sudden is starting to look less attractive.

The spread over premium gas is quite a bit less. I just filled my car with $3.759 premium while diesel was $4.019.
Besides that, I've always said that there is more to diesel than fuel and costs savings. It may be a benefit but it's not the end-all-be-all of the diesel equation. Some people like me just prefer them given their driving characteristics. I'm willing to bet many Americans would love them for the same reason as me if they just gave them a chance.

commonsense. many boosts for you. I have never seen a comparable (if you can ever call it that!!!) Audi beat its BMW counterpart. they are heavier, nose heavy pigs that have to use AWD to overcaome fwd architecture (NO THEY DONT COME IN RWD FORM, BUT MOST COME IN FWD GARB). Poorer engine technology (usually a generation older) doesnt help the equation. they then launch RS models when the BMW equivalents are out of cylce and call them "limited editions" when there is nothing limited about them, other than the fact that diehards (losers) woudl buy them. Given significant power and dynamic gaps (i.e a6 4.2 vs 550i or a4 3.2 vs. 335i) in most of the range, they then elect to launch a "s" version which gets handily beat by the normally positoned appropriate BMW.
They they shy away from Formula1, where big boys compete and go to Leman, where they dominate but only becasue BMW and MB left the series in 1999.
then there is the Phaeton, which was stillborn Wreck, but shortly, they cut corners and use the platform in the Bentley, an aging brand where they got outsmated by BMW during the sale from Rolls royce (BMW picked up the marquee brand for next to nothing).
No, dont mind the midgets.. revel that they exist.. it provides jobs for good looking, Ivy league educated people like me.

I have to agree with you on the launch cycle of the cars, definetly seems out of place and time. and must agree on the S cars not beating out their "normal rivals". I wouldnt go as so far as to call them pigs and so on, they are good cars, but I could just never justify buying one, NEVER. I believe every car has their purpose and Audi makes solid cars, with interiors that poeple claim look great ( i personally dont like em much, they seem boring to me, but thats with most german interiors, but the quality is TOP NOTCH). ALthough i do belive quality interior is important, TO ME its all about the drive. Every car that i leased in the last 5 years has been a very objective process, I test drive non-stop., I test drove the a4, girl friend had the A6, the a8 and NONE of them came close for me even to consider them over a 335i or a 750li, not even over Japanese competition, especially the a4 or the a6 over the g35 and m45. But the thing that throwes me off is there price!!! I live in New York and its a pretty big market but they still offer the worst lease deals ever. My girlfriend leased her semi loaded a6 V6 for close to 700 dollars a month, in 2005. For that price the car was Garbage, forget about a 535i, it couldnt touch a g35 in tems of handling, accelration, brakes and interior technology, the only thing the Audi had over it was a tad better interior to the feel, not the eye. They need to figure out the pricing thing, In New York a fully loaded S8 cost close to 100 thousand U.S.D including taxes. The new 09 7 series will be about 70 thousand dollars, and will kill the Audi in Terms of perforance, and the Audi is supposed to an "S".

Im not disputing that the Audi a4 is fast and in general a great car but you can never go by manufacter claims. BMW ALWAYS under estimates. Audi usually keeps their numbers on point, except for the A6 v6, (my girlfriend owned an 05 and it couldnt keep up with an my previous Fx35, while it was rated a bit faster). BMW always under estimates. Prior to installing a ECU piggy back in my 335i, i presonally raced cars which were always rated faster by their repsective manufacter but in the end i took them aesily (Charger SRT8, mercedes c55 amg, pontiac gto 6.0 liter, Audi s4 and so on. My point is the 335d is nowhere near 6 seconds if it can pull ahead of a Vauxhall VR8, a 420hp s type, just check out the auto car video, you will be shocked. And you have to remember that these twin turbos offer cheap hp, wheres as there are barely companies in the U.S that even touch audi, you are able to get an extra 80hp and 110+ lb feet of torque for less then 1000 U.S Dollars.

Why is BMW waiting until October to pollute our skies? It's not as though this is new technology that need to be refined (rebranded perhaps). If anything, the X5-WD40plusMturboHeavyDutyi should've been on sale last year, it alteast makes a little sense.
These cars should be a hit when diesel is 50% more than gasoline. Oh well, stupid people need to spend their money on something, so why not dinosaurs.

I was going to say the same thing...who the hell wants a diesel now? diesel fuel is damn near $1 more per gallon in the US versus regular gas.
now if you plan on brewing your own biodiesel (which I doubt) that's a different story!
I hope at least these are clean diesels - like MB BLU's.

This obsession with the short-term premium price for diesel fuel is unfounded. If someone buys a car that uses a different fuel, I would think they would look a the fuel prices over time; not over the last two months. The average premium for diesel fuel over regular unleaded is $.30 over the last few years. Compared to premium gas, it is about the same.
Fuel suppliers and wholesalers are making almost nothing on gasoline right now because supply is too high against slumping demand in the face of super-high raw material prices (i.e. crude oil). Eventually fuel suppliers will lower there supplies of gasoline and increase output of diesel fuel (where they can make a profit) and both fuels will settle back at their natural price levels.
Last spring and summer diesel averaged $.30 less than regular. Using the logic on this board, we should have all bought diesels back then just because the fuel had a short-term price advantage. Give me a break. Look at the long term picture, unless one wants to purchase his or her car for only three months at a time.
Actually, BMW will beat Audi to the punch with the I-6 model, however, Audi's sister, VW, will beat everyone to market with two T2B5 diesels in the VW Jetta TDI and Jetta SportWagen TDI in September. It's just that Audi doesn't want to use the four cylinder in the American lineup and is waiting on emission certification of the V-6. Audi and VW use the same engines, save the V-12. BMW does not plan for a four cylinder diesel in North America at this time.
And for Huu76. Diesels are not more polluting than gas cars that meet T2B5. In fact, as I've stated before, the average, comparable diesel emits fewer levels of HCs, CO, CO2, and VOCs. The diesel has now come on par with gas cars with respect to PM (90% reduction in one year), and has now reduced NOx down 70% to meet an emissions standard designed to make it easy for gas cars to pass, and you still call them dirty. Please try to use statements based on fact, because a 90% cleaner-burning diesel is not a heavy polluter compared to gas cars in which it can be compared against. And every diesel can use any blend of three different renewable fuels to lower emissions even more, and they do this without modification or loss in fuel economy. But if you insist that gas-electric hybrid technologies are the only way to lower consumption of oil and lower your environmental impact, then buy and drive a hybrid and leave the rest of us alone. Go after large SUV owners or some other polluters. Clean diesel is not a target you should be wasting your time on.
