BMW 335i - BMW's untouchable magic card
With the BMW 335i, BMW not only releases a great looking coupe but it is BMW's ace to kill the competition.

Look at how BMW raises the bar:

1. A manual transmission which Lexus does not offer on the IS350

2. How about 0-60 in 5.1 and a 1/4 mile in 13.6 @ 104 mph.

3. Best in-class acceleration along with the IS350 but the only one with a manual

4. Best in-class handling

5. 300 horsepower and 300 lb. ft of torque

6. BARGAIN STARTING PRICE OF JUST OVER $41,000

Well Audi, Lexus, Mercedes-Benz time to play what you have always played:

CATCH UP!

335i my next car and BMW's grand slam.

Hopefully the the IS350 coupe will get a manual transmission and some more horse power. Right now the current IS350 has 306 hp; it would be nice if the coupe has 350 hp.

Lexus, 350hp out of the 3.5 V6? That has to be tuned up to get that much, and will raise the price of the coupe higher than the BMW. I agree that the IS sedan is much better car than the sedan 3xx, and comparing a coupe to a sedan is not right, the coupe is heavier than the sedan that's why has few milliseconds faster from 0-60.
I would love to see the new IS coupe convertable, and I think Toyota is giving up on the Supra because of the IS's success. Too bad for the Supra though, that car was one of the best!!

Well, considering that it is the newest car out, it better be better than the competition. Audi will introduce its competitor the A5 in about a year.

Will......keep in mind, the 335i is going to have more torgue than the IS, which has more to do with acceleration than HP. Either way they are gonna be head to head on acceleration times, I don't think .1 seconds 0-60 is going to sway anybodys decision one way or another.

2007 BMW 335i Dynamometer Run:

Interesting, visit: http://www.automobilemag.com/features/news/0609_2007_bmw_335i_dynamometer/

Car and Driver times are historically lower than all other magazines...I don't doubt they will be able to run 0-60 times in the high 4's once C&D delivers the results for 335i coupe.

We know, but the 335i was tested by automobile, Car and Driver will probably shave a tenth or so from that time as they are usually more agressive. The Lexus numbers are from CD.

Will,
Actually, the base IS350 costs more than the 330i, and loaded the BMW only costs $300 more (in Canada).

I think its funny that no one mentions that this is a turbo. Technically, it should be in a seperate category. But hey, if a naturally aspirated IS can keep up, all the better.

You're right about BMW guys not caring. Check out these two morons in this other forum. They pull tantrums when they're proven wrong.

More torque maybe, but German cars tend to have lead in their doors. Ever notice they're usually always heavier?

I have defended Lexus' right to exist on this site more than once, so I'm not against them. But I don't see the IS350 a worthy comparison to a BMW 335i.

The IS350 is not a driver's car. It's riddled with electronic restraints, the paddle-tranny lags between gears. 306 hp, sure. It's a nice cruiser, no question.

This 335i is going to use its 300 hp to the fullest. BMW has married lots of power (not just "BMW" power) to a beautiful design. FINALLY.

At 300 hp vs. 306 hp, Lexus is look weak on driving dynamics. They need to get past the luxury crutch, which is the thing holding back the IS from greatness.

Yes, BMW doors (and body panels) are VERY solidly constructed. I can tell by looking at Toyota/Lexus/Honda/Acura doors that they look thin and light.

And the 3 Series and IS are both fast, so who really cares about .4 of a second? Maybe that car had more fuel in the tank, making it heavier, or driver was heavier. I can agree that BMW's ride DIFFERENTLY than Lexus's, (I have a BMW). I would take a 3 Series (coupe or sedan) over the IS. I would take a BMW over a Lexus. But some people are different.

EvilHomer, it does indeed make my day to post something interesting and also controversial. The best part about it is the brand wars you guys bring up EVERY time.

It's true BMW is the best, why do you think I'm leaving the so called rising Audi camp?

I think Audi is the best actually.

You know on second thought I don't know which is better, instead I'll let you enlighten me with your brand wars.....

Welcome to 1999 BMW, meaning the year Audi released the twin-turbo V6 S4.

When was the last time BMW had a turbo engine? It's going to be interesting to see how reliable their TT engine is.

I think Toyota is holding back on their Toyota Supra to see what the Nissan and Acura bring out first. They probably want to see how the new Nissan Skyline and Acura NSX perform first. Hopefully they bring it back soon, I'm definitely are going to get one for sure.

Well Audi, Lexus, Mercedes-Benz time to play what you have always played:

CATCH UP!
------------------------------------------

I don't think Lexus or Mercedes have ever really tried to topple the 3-series. Both these companies are biased towards comfort and cruising, with minimal sport in their cars. The Lexus ads might want to tell buyers that the IS350 was designed to topple the 3-series, but IMO, it's not really a sports sedan but more of a sporty comfortable cruiser, just like the C-Class.

Audi too seems to focus more on delivering a reasonably sporty ride, but not a car to beat the 3er.

Audi does their things, BMW theirs, Lexus theirs etc.

Phantom, "head to head on acceleration times, I don't think .1 seconds 0-60 is going to sway anybodys decision one way or another". Are you kidding me? Have you read the posts on this site and others? People are sheep and will base their decisions upon fractions of a second so they can say they have the faster car. Although most will never be able to obtain the full potential on the machinery.

Foxy,
IS350 = 1567kg, 330i = 1565kg (auto). Doesn't make much of a difference in reality, but considering the IS has a bigger engine.

335i only beats the IS by 27ft/lb of torque. That isn't exactly huge since the IS beats the 330i by 50ft/lbs. Using last years weight, the coupe will probably only weigh about 100lbs less.

We'll just have to wait and see. Wonder if this means the end of the 330Ci?

5 point anything is fast.

oh, the days when ferraris did it it 6 and had 250 bhp, and that was fast...
now it's all 400 bhp and 0-60 in 3.5
for crying out loud a 2 tonne technological tour-de-force (an S-550) can do it in 5.8!
the 80s brought us the original hot hatch and perhaps the most reliable car in the world (a w-124 e class)
the 80s were good.
not that i was alive.

While some of you prefer to come here and argue about who makes the better car you seem to lose sight of some very important facts:

1) It really does not matter what a car can do on paper. But what it can do in the hands of a skilled driver that counts. There are too many arrogant minded people out there who assume purchasing a vehicle that they perceive to be superior to another brand, automatically elevates them to the status of 'better driver'. This is truly a sad sight to see, as a true automotive enthusiast appreciates a vehicle for what it is and not what it represents.

2) On any given day any vehicle in the hands of the right driver can out perform another with a less skilled individual at the wheel. Speaking from experience, I can tell you there have been days when I have defeated many seemingly superior vehicles in any of the toys in my garage. Which includes an S4, M3, IS350 and a Celica GTS. The latter having won more that it's share of contests to many a BMW including 330ci's. I consider myself a very good driver and spend a lot of my spare time honing my skills at the local track. But despite the constant practice and preparation, I also have been defeated by vehicles that on paper would seem 'inferior' to my own. The point is there are too many variables that come into play when two vehicles are competing and simply assuming one will beat another based on numbers (some of which are made up) is just ridiculous.

3) No matter how much many time you chose to have the Audi/BMW/Mercedes/Lexus argument it changes nothing. They will still continue to make cars, which people will continue to purchase. And they will still continue to make money none of which goes into your pockets. So can the childish pissing matches and lets talk about real issues concerning vehicles not subjective opinions that do nothing but fuel pointless grandstanding.

I normally visited this site just to read up on whats new... but lately things have taken a turn for the worse

Would it still drive the same if one of the propellors fell off? The handling might only be half as good then.

mpwr,
Spoken like a true BMW blowhard. Can't win the numbers game anymore, so we'll rely on the subjective stuff that can't be measured. All this "handling" must be reserved for the higher end cars because their poser mobiles are slow and mushy as hell.

Hey momar,
Can you go through your stack of car brochures and let us know. Thanks kid.
