BMW 335i Coupe & Cabriolet Get M3’s 7-Speed Double-Clutch Gearbox
Parallel to the market launch of the facelifted 3 Series sedan and touring models, BMW announced the availability of its new 7-speed semi-automatic gearbox with double-clutch for the 335i Coupe and 335i Convertible models. Named DKG, the new double-clutch transmission was introduced for the first time on the M3 Sedan. It offers the driver the choice of controlling the gearbox changes through a shift lever on the centere console or via paddles on the steering wheel.

Equipped with this gearbox, the 335i Coupe with the 306Hp twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter straight six completes the sprint from 0 to 100 km/h (62mph) in 5.4 sec or 0.1 sec faster than the model fitted with the 6-speed manual transmission and 0.3 seconds faster than the 335i Coupe with the previously available 6-speed automatic. -Continued

Furthermore, the double-clutch gearbox helps drop consumption in both the 335i Coupe and Cabriolet by up to 5% compared to the equivalent models with 6-speed manual or automatic transmissions. In particular, the 335i Coupe & Convertible models with the DKG achieve an average fuel consumption in the combined EU test cycle of 8.8lt /100km (26.7 mpg) and 9.1lt/100km (25.9 mpg) respectively.

Unfortunately this is Europe only -- BMW is not doing this for the U.S., at least not for the time being.

That's not a photo of the DKG. The DKG does not have paddles that push forward, they only pull backwards.

It is the correct photo. 335i is not getting the M3 shift paddles. Its getting the same paddles as the step tranny.

"BMW is not doing this for the U.S., at least not for the time being."

That doesn't make any sense, because the M3 already has it.

However, it's like what Audi is doing--Europe is getting the option of a seven-speed DSG in the Q5 and S5, but we aren't... yet. That transmission should be making its US debut in the new S4.

The S4 is faster.

BTW what makes you say that?

'Furthermore, the new 3.0 TFSI achieves exemplary fuel efficiency. On average, the sedan uses 9.7 liters of fuel per 100 km (24.25 US mpg), and the Avant 9.9 liters per 100 km (23.76 US mpg) – an improvement of 3.4 liters (26 percent) compared with its predecessor.' -Audi press release.

Which one is faster hasn't been determined yet, they have not been in a comparison test together.

If you look at the S5 and 335 coupe, they are almost identical, with the 3 series being more fun to drive and just as fast around a track.

What I find impressive is how BMW constantly uses less Hp and achieves the same performance as more powerful audis.

I think the latest M3 was a statement by BMW that its not going overboard with the hp war like Audi and merc. They made the new M3 have the same hp as the old rs4 and used a smaller engine, less torque, and the new M3 is still a couple seconds a lap faster then the rs4 around a track(top gear video). When BMW could have easily put a much more powerful engine in the car to up the bar. but yet they raised the bar with less hp.

The S4 is completely different from the S5. One has a 4.2L 354hp V8, and one has a 333hp 3.0L supercharged V6. You can't go by S5 tests to judge the S4.

I'm sure you were EXACTLY the kind of person who was bashing Audi when the new S4 came out. It has 333hp as opposed to 344 with the old one. It's significantly quicker but gets much better gas mileage. They also didn't go overboard with the S3/TT, which both use 270hp 2.0T four-bangers.

So, you fail.

Not to mention... you act as if BMW actually made the M3 less powerful, like Audi did with the S4. BMW still stuck in a V8 instead of a six and the horsepower went up by nearly 90. I adore the E90/E92 M3 but what you're saying isn't true. The new RS4, on the other hand, will probably not be any more powerful than the B7.

Great that the 335 DCT gets better MPG, though. I would love a 335xi DCT.

what about the 580hp rs6, or the fact the new rs4/5 is rumored to have 450-470(thats almost in m5 territory thats crazy)?

yeah but i doubt audi is going to make the one faster then the other...if anything they would have made the s5 the faster car.

the s3/tt are vw golf based vehicles...theres not to much they could do there. Yes the new S4 is more efficient then the old one, but when you compare it to the competition the 335, the s4 is less efficient.

BMW had to use a V8 if they didn't want to use forced induction...the merc has a 6.2 liter! BMW went about it in a smarter and more efficient way though.

Have you driven the new PDK (dual clutch) from Porsche? That's the smoothest performance dual clutch in a non-Ferrari set-up so far.

I'm well aware that the DKG is the latest technology and is actually quicker than the traditional manual, but BMW manuals are great. There is nothing I like better than the feel of the gearlever moving from one gate to another -- when I want it to. And I love matching revs during downshifts. I know the DKG does it for you, but I want to do it myself. I'll get a DKG when my left leg develops arthritis or something.

I hear you gooch, I was lucky to test drive a manual M3 sedan and the clutch and shifter feel so nice, Id think I would miss that connection to the car too.
