Special thanks to reader 007vehispy1 for the tip on this promotional video showing the new BMW 7-Series.  If perspective is everything, than this video does a good job of showcasing the new 7 from every angle including some interior footage.

As excited as most of us are to get behind the wheel and actually drive the new 7, for now we will have to settle for pictures and videos, and as always the Spies will keep you up to date as new information comes forth.

Has BMW gone nuts? I see Lexus LS styling cues front and back. And in case anyone needs reminding, the latest generation of LS has lost most every magazine comparo that it's been in!

One more time for the slow guy.

1) BMW has clearly copied some styling features of the Lexus LS.

2) The Lexus LS has lost pretty much every major car magazine comparison that it's been in in the last couple of years.

3) It's nuts to take styling cues from a competitor that makes an inferior and bland product (see point #2).

You know, in order to really assess if a car has presence, you have to have acutally been in its presence. Have you?

I am not saying it doesn't - I don't have enough experience with it to know.

Thats true, but this car in specific looks "big" and very luxurious even in that video. It's probably because of the new subtle tasteful design. Plus I compared photos of this and the current one, which also has road presence. The new one destroys the old one. It looks upmarket.

the front looks like the current 5 series.

rear looks a lot like Lexus LS (especially in this video). if not because of the very tiny nuances in the curve of the rare lights, i would say they are quite identical.

interior is like current 7 series with the additional 30+ buttons.

IMO, this car has no more road presence than current 5 series. what a let down. the last gen 7 catches everyone's attention, and this one is just too boring.

Actually if anything I would say the rear end has a tiny resemblance to the Nissan Maxima, but what do I know.

This 7-Series in real life will have road presence and resonance!

i guess if EL34 agreed with me, then i would be in a deeper trouble.

part of what i said above is pure speculation, which is why i said IMO.

parts that are not my speculation (i.e. 30+ buttons that defy the ORIGINAL purpose of I-drive, rear exhaust bumper, LS like rear lights) are known facts in this video.

EL34, did you even bother to watch the video? or you just jumped to the comment section like you used to?

seeing how the LS used the side profile and rear end from the current 5-series, how can anyone say that this car's tail lights look like the LS? It's a very BMW rear-end.

I'm so sick of hearing people say "BMW copied Lexus' rear" because of the integrated exhausts. Most don't realize that manufacturers use suppliers. Most of the time, the same suppliers! It just so happens that the thermoplastic forming unit Lexus used to create the "exhaust in the rear valance look" was developed by VW (and their supplier) for the Veyrons centrally mounted heat cannon. Once a company invests the money to create a new technology (usually for their "halo" product), other manufacturers benefit 10-fold because the price per-unit in their applications is so much cheaper, considering they don't have to include all the research & development costs. BMW has done a remarkable job with this chassis. Electronically, this is a much larger step for the industry than the styling on the E65 was in 2002. BMW is using the fastest in-vehicle network ever created. Ever! On top of that, they reversed the valve positions in the V8 to place the turbos in the engine valley and the intake system on the sides; and made it work! The 8 series, or whatever they call it, will be a phenomenal product if BMW uses this platform and sculpts it into a production CS.

W10....

I agree with your comments on the technological merits of this vehicle

I also agree that only people with nothing constructive to say waste their time and ours with comments on how this vehicle took styling cues from another.

However the BMW 7-series from 2 gen ago was Sleek and the Current Gen was Burly {Both were packed to the rafters with tech for their time}

The Vehicle in the Video above is...., Well is....., Just Bland

Kinda like the Maybach Effect. Packed full of Wonderful Technology but so lacking inCharacter few would like to own one.

W140Fan: wth? sure you may know a lot about BMW, sure most of what you said maybe true, but that doesn't make the car in the video look different than LS.

sure lexus may have taken the advantage of VW's technology, but this gen LS was the first massive produced luxury car (not counting brands that are too rare) with the integrated pipes, just like how BMW had I-drive in the first place , and people call those massive integration "i-drive-ish".

and did i say thing about engine? in car network? what's the point of busting out those stuff? i am getting an impression that you just happen to copy and paste.

W140FanW140Fan - 7/7/2008 3:39:01 AM
+6 BoostDrop the Boost Up the Boost
I95, I agree wholeheartedly that this generation 7 is the most conservative I've seen, and more conservative than I anticipated. After the E65, an "evolution" was required more than a "revolution". The E65 was definitely a revolution. If BMW had no plans of offering a CS, I bet this 7 would be more visually "dynamic". However, thats what the coupe is for now...and I cant wait to see it!

Ghosthunter, the point of my entire spiel was that manufacturers all have the same technical dilemmas and since they use the same batch of suppliers, they get the same technical solutions. The so called high trunked "bangle-butt" on the rear of the E65 is a modern fuel economy trick to help the air in the slipstream above the car disconnect from the body more efficiently at speed. If you noticed, the W221 S-class and F4 LS both feature this exact same design principle. Is everyone copying BMW because they're the best? NO, fuel economy standards and consumer awareness are changing so competing manufacturers often engineer the same technical solutions, because it's the best solution. As production increases, the price for the thermoplastic that makes the exhaust on the latest crop of premium luxury cars so special will drop dramatically. Your next Accord will probably use it, then the Civic! Will they look like LS's too? iDrive was an almost-great solution to a problem that BMW realized would only grow with time. All those buttons! (go sit in a new LS) Other manufacturers came to the same conclusion.
I spoke on the specifics of the V8 and FlexRay integration to give BMW credit where it is due. Good engineering is good engineering. As far as my writing? I'll take your "copy and paste" statement as a compliment. I'd rather people hate then me sound like an ill-informed dumb a**!

W140Fan - you are seriously high:

so we are ill infomed becase the new 7 has the intergared pipes that the LS used for few years. and we are wrong for pointing the new 7 uses the same technique that has been done in the LS because that design is simply better.

intergrated pipes: when LS uses it, it all for the fasion. when BMW uses it, it is all for the best solution and bring down the cost for the customer. and we are prohibited of saying the new 7 pipe looks like the one that was on the LS becuase Mr W140Fan will bring out all the reasons: from engine to suspension to in car network to idrive to Merc to fuul Economy to production technique to Accord to civic and so on and so forth
now do we have an agreement?

oh, and i have no problem seeing it used on a accord or civic, just like we have no problem seeing F1 style steer wheel mounted shifters on economic cars. all i will say it, it is a designed that first used on the LS, and then flow down to civic and accord.

Ghosthunter, It seems you are stumbling over your ego. I don't understand how you have come to the conclusions you stated, I said nothing even similar to that.
To clarify: Lexus and BMW use the thermoplastic for the same reason, because its the best solution. (They probably got it from the same supplier, around the same time. Don't forget it takes 4-7 years to engineer a production car.) Same for iDrive. You know thats not all BMW proprietary logic, right?
I'm not sure about you, but when I converse I like to use integrated examples of what I'm currently speaking about. For whatever reason, you seem to have gotten caught-up on my examples. I didn't know well thought out, intelligent responses were something I should be ashamed of...
Our complete difference of opinion comes from your consumer perspective ("that one looks pretty, I like it"), and my industry perspective, ("I cant believe they stamped that body panel in those dimensions with that chrome vent in it"). Neither is wrong, your responses seemed so avid I assumed you were an industry head such as I. You know what they say about assumptions.

The more i see it, the more i like it. I think this is what everyone was expecting in 2002. It's kind of a visual letdown after the radical experimental styling used by the current 7, but it looks like the true successor to the classic 1996-2001 model.

The front end is definitely growing on me but the rear-end never will.

Even still on a refreshed model I'd like to see larger headlights; to match the grill, the front skirt to look a little sportier like the current one, & the taillights to lose their awful Asian looking kink.

front end from side also looks like MB CL, rear is uglier than any ugly car, for example X6.
To me it's not even 5/10 in design. Maybe when i will see it in person it would improve.

Clearly a disappointment in the looks category, however the interior screams contemporary luxury. I do agree with some people here seeing LS styling in the rear end, looks they wanted to take the safe route after the Bangle Butt (which BTW was the most avantgarde design change in the history of BMW).

I do not like this new 7series..There is no deny it is better than the previous one, which was just increadibly ugly...The real question is how does it measure to the S class??Which I think is by far the class leader, and always has been. Simply put, I would rather have a white S class with panaroma and AMG kit than this BMW anyday..

I did say that, still stand by it, & have been saying I didn't like the new 7 all along...So quit trying to alter the reality of what I'm saying for a quick pat on the back.

Yes a few things about the design are growing on me namely the cars overall stance & profile.

However the taillights, front skirt, & grill are some of the ugliest styling cues to ever grace a BMW causing the 7; IMO, to be the worst looking car in this class. My opinion on this will never change unless the things I mentioned do so first.
