BMW 7-series 8-speed could get stop-start technology
ZF’s latest entry into the ever-escalating automatic transmission wars, an eight-speed unit, has just been updated to include compatibility with stop-start technology.

This will allow the close-geared system to shut the engine down when the vehicle comes to a stop, yet fire the engine back up and drive off at a moment’s notice when the accelerator is pressed, much like a golf cart.

The innovation comes from an addition called a ‘hydraulic impulse oil storage unit’.

When did Lexus ever have the "start/stop thing"? How come I haven't read about it? Send me the link.

TheBoss is absolutely right! Toyota came up with the stop-start engine and shift gear the first in the Prius. now beside this people need to know one draw back from this BMW and that is, imagine yourself stuck in traffic on a hot summer day and your BMW technology shuts off the engine, does that ring a bell as what that means? You're guessed right, your AC IS TURNED OFF TOO. So you and your BMW technology will burn to rubber.

The first Honda Civic hybrid also had this option to shut off the engine when the came stopped but with the battery it left the fan running, which was horrible just like this BMW. That's why Toyota/Lexus do NOT shut off the AC unit if the engine turns off while the car is stopped.

Personally, its a good approach to save some 6% of fuel consumption, but such technology works good only in a hybrid car where the battery takes care of comforting the occupants.

The Boss, unless Lexus came out with a start/stop thing on a non hybrid model then you have a point. BMW is the first to do it on a gasoline engine and Lexus has never done such a thing yet.

Aside from that, I bet you anything that I can drive your Lexus off the cliff without a problem...Why do you care about that kinda stuff anyway?? Are you worried of occassionally trying to commit suicide??

First, I like a car that drives and looks the best. Everything else comes after and that whole cliff thing wouldn't even be on my list...LOL

What's wrong with ripping off a good idea? All cars should have start stop or maybe a start stop mode. Most cars get decent mileage but it all goes to hell along with lots of emissions when the cars are idling in traffic.

Yikes...what will happen when it stops but then DOESN'T start back up?

I wouldn't buy this one the first year they come out. I'd hate to be the guinea pig on this technology. Just ask anybody who bought a 2002 745i and had to endure various computer hardware/software issues.

"Just ask anybody who bought a 2002 745i and had to endure various computer hardware/software issues."

Word...

I was one of those unfortunate souls. The glitches never affected the driveability of the car. It just inhibited use of stereo etc. The driveline stuff is usually tested/engineered to the level of a Saturn V Rocket. Also usually separated from other elements.

Everyone who had issues on 2002 7's got their cars bought back and were given 2003's with a lot more options for no extra charge.

I know, I was one of them.

BMW did the right thing for virtually everyone who had issues and asked nicely.

Nothing is as reliable as you posting something truly dumb each day.

Maybe.

He was obviously trying to ruffle someone's feathers. BMW is famous for it's performance. Lexus is famous for it's reliability. I have no doubt in my mind that if one of the transmissions WAS better than the other, it would be Lexus'.

so... it fuctions like Mild hybrid that some of the american SUV used? this feature won't benefit you much especially when you have your AC on.

But the beauty of autospies rests with the relative balance.

For every jerk-off-over-zealous Lexus fanboy, there is a arrogant German-only prick such as yourself.

I'd say welcome back, but I never liked you.

What will it cost to replace the starter? Especially on a BMW.
If I run into a store for a few minutes, I leave the car running, to avoid excess wear and tear on the starter.

I remember reading that this feature would not be made available in hotter climates because the AC would be shut off when the engine was off. Unless the AC is being run off the battery but that would be too power intensive for the battery to handle for any length of time. :/

Isn't starting and stopping the motor over and over again hard on the engine? I mean, thousands of parts have to start moving in unison at exactly the right time. I always thought it was bad.
