BMW 8-Series to make a come back as a four-door coupe?
Four-door coupes are currently a fast growing market. With the success of the Mercedes-Benz CLS, other luxury auto makers are realizing the need for a four-door coupe in their model lineup. Audi is already hard at work with Audi A7, which it confirmed earlier this March, and Porsche is almost done developing their Panamera. So what’s BMW’s answer? To bring back the BMW 8-Series as a four-door coupe.

Since the BMW 7-Series doesn’t fit the company’s sports car philosophy and will never be made as an ‘M,’ BMW CEO Reithofer is trying to push for the 8-Series to become the company’s four-door sports coupe.

The old BMW 8-Series saw the end of production in 1999, which was built in a V12 version that produced 300-326 horsepower and a V8 version that produced 286 horsepower. If the 8-Series goes back into production expect horsepower output to be substantially above 350.

I would prefer a traditional two door coupe myself, but if a 4 door is done well that would work too.

The last generation 850 was my favorite BMW of all time. (The Z8 a close second)

The Z8 was garbage in handling though. It sounded awesome however!

agree, the 8-series is one of the most iconic BMW's. My favorite has always been the original 6-series.

WOW! That looks awesome, hope they make it. It would be really big though because 8-series would be based on a 7-series platform=very long for a 4-door coupe.

now that's the vehicle everyone was hoping the X6 would be. That looks sweet. But so was the "M6 turned into a 4 door" photoshop that was circulating two years ago when the X6 was first announced, and this looks like the same car. Hopefully we're not getting fooled again.

i agree; and once the lex gt-f comes out, bmw will probably just stop making cars alltogether.

i wish bmw would just stop ruining the whole industry for all us smart lex buyers

it sure didn't take long for someone who obviously knows nothing about cars to say something retarded. You have to love this site.

The 7-series is BMW's flagship luxury sedan. BMW has sold more exclusive and more expensive cars than the 7-series for years, including the last 8-series, the Z8, and the current M5 and M6. Just because they come out with a 4-door coupe 8-series (assuming that's what they call it), or a range topping Z9, or whatever they might come out with that costs more than a 7-series doesn't mean they're afraid of the LS or any other huge four door car. Mercedes has the S-class, SL, and CL all in the same price stratosphere, does the existence of the CL and SL mean Mercedes is afraid of the LS? Of course not.

does anyone know what production car was the first to offer a 6 speed manual tranny? i think the vette, acura legend, nsx, viper and the 8 series all offered one in the early 90's. who was first?

Damn that looks cool... But it won't be possible to make a four door coupe with those lines, unless the rear seats will be reserved for midgets!

The CLS's back seats already are, so no biggie.

The CLS seats are only comfortable to people 5'-9" and below. My co-worker owns one and I haaaaaaate when it's his turn to drive. A 5 minute drive seems like an hour...that's sitting behind the passenger seat w/ a 5-9 person in front...I'm 6'.

Love it.

I just think they should call it something different, and bring the 8er back as a real big COUPE. As in, an enclosed, low-to-the-ground vehicle with two doors! I know, it's so taboo in this day and age.

Once I get sick of convertibles, a big, sporty, comfy 850i (or whatever engine) would be nice to have in ten or fifteen years. I love the CL, too.

That's false S4 the rear seats of the CLS may not be a S-Class but they are not midget bad or SC430 bad.

It's not supposed to make sense. There are already cars for that.

Overall I still think the CLS is better looking then the A5 and this 8 series.

hopefully, this car will have an 8-speed automatic, be so quiet that you can't hear the engine and be super reliable.

4-door coupes are dumb, eventhough this pic is actually quite nice. Can't beat the original 8-series though, you won't mix that up with anything else on the road.

BMW and Audi seem very well in touch with there customers. Mercedes does too but to a small degree. Lexus is just a poser they are happy just to play catch-up to all of them. Audi and BMW continue to expand there brands into new niches. BMW and Audi will continue to span a large price curve. BMW has one potentially great looking car on there hands.

Lexus doesn't make their customers happy? Lexus isn't expanding their line-up into new niches?

and let's not forget who came out with the first "4-door coupe."

All the major luxury brands are expanding, not just Audi and BMW.

I just realized this thing looks like the Dodge Intrepid, just chop a little off the trunk. That's probably why I thin it's good looking.

Shouldn't surprise anyone since Chrysler was the original 4-door sleek coupe profile (i.e. Chrysler Concorde).

Calling cars like the 8-series and the CLS,coupe/4-doors is stupid because a coupe will always be a 2-door and a sedan will alwayus be a 4-door,no matter how they look, this car just happends to be a Sport sedan, and thats it!!
