BMW CEO on the X6: “This is a romantic X5 in a way.”
BMW unveiled the much anticipated BMW X6 Concept at the Frankfurt Motor Show last week. According to BMW, most of what you saw in the concept will be carried over to the production model next year. But the X6 has a lot to live up to when it hits the market.

First, it will be BMW’s first car with a Two Mode hybrid powertrain. Second, BMW will have to see whether its customers will give into a non-traditional-looking SUV...

Looks OK as a concept, I've noted three things in looking at the endless autospies spy shots of this thing over the past few months (and listening to people's comments)...

(1) The rear doors on the Frankfurt version are a lot sleeker than on the spy shot ones. All the mules had rear quarter window 'posts' (like the X5 rear doors) which I think will mar the coupe-lines in a big way. Automakers use these posts to allow the rear windows to roll down more completely and to allow them to use smaller, cheaper, more-reliable window drive motors.

(2) There has been a total lack of interior shots. Cudos to you, 001, if you can shed some light on the X6's interior. I'm thinking it will be small and claustrophobic.

The X-5's interior is pretty nice but it still looks like mom's SUV. BMW will have to do a major re-work if they want the instrument panel to look 'sporty and appeal to the urban male buyer'.

(3) Everyone has been saying the the X6 will knock the socks off of the Infiniti FX45 - well I hope it would if BMW's pricing differentials hold up. I guess that the X6 will sticker out at about $70-$80K when its available - more than twice that of the FX. I think the only buyer BMW may reliably count on are people tired of their Porsche Cayenne's.

We'll see......

If it is priced at about that price than it better handle and accelerate waaay better than the FX. But lets not forget that an all new FX is due in about a year, so then we'll see how they compare.
I do think the X6 is a beautiful machine though, and I admire BMW alot more now.

IMO the BMW X6 and infinite FX45 dont compete. The X6 is in a higher market, something you can compare to a Range Rover sport and a Cayenne while the FX is a crossover. Thats just what I think and this explains the price which is predicted to be above the X5. I also think this is the sexiest SUV (SAC!) ever.

M53R, are you saying that the X6 is not a crossover? I think you and everyone else should stop putting excuses for why BMW's are alittle overpriced. Now I dont think the X6 should range at the $70-80K, but like I said, if it's worth that much than it must outperform the outcoming FX in a big way.

GTR ... The X6 is as big as the X5 just a much sportier version ... It is not going to compete with the FX by Infiniti.

the X6 is aimed at the Cayenne and the Range Rover, not the FX. I'm sure Infiniti will sell plenty of FX's by calling them less expensive "competitors" to the X5 and X6 (hell, even the X3 can get up to $50k if you option it out) but that's not the demographic BMW is going after with this vehicle. This is form over function, high dollar, low volume.

To put things in prospective: the X6 should be about six inches longer than the Infiniti. But the only one you could compare this to is the FX45, which is certainly not only half the price of what the X6 will be. They are similarly impractical as SUVs, but IMO the X6 is even hotter-looking. I DON'T think the interior will be too claustrophobic- it is a big car, after all.

The base 3.0t should be priced at around $65K, which is suitably upmarket from the X5. With it will be a host of standard features that are optional/not available on the X5 3.0si, but possibly standard/available on the 4.8i. The eight-cylinder X6 will probably be in the 70s, putting it right against the Range Rover Sport Supercharged and Range Rover HSE.

Who would have thought 30 yrs ago BMW would produce something like this. A company making world class, lightweight sport sedans in the 70s and 80s coming out with a 5000 lb performance machine?
Wait 'till the USA attacks Iran's nuclear sites within 12 months and oil hits $100+/barrel...will this monster sell then?
