BMW CEO warns emission rules could cost billions
The demands by politicians pushing for the environmental vote ‘would cost each car producer a few billions of euros because reducing further grams of CO2 would be always be more expensive’. The EU has proposed rules requiring carmakers to cut carbon dioxide emissions from new cars to an average 130g/km by 2012.

In the US, legislators are planning to similar moves to curb production of vehicles that use too much fuel. On the table are draft rules that would require an annual increase in economy of 4%, something the carmakers feel could pave the way for even greater sales of import vehicles from Asia.

I'm not too worried about CO2 as we can always suck it out of the atmosphere by planting more trees and other plants. I'd like to see free convict labour used for that purpose. The real problem is that our planet is overpopulated and the high (mostly impoverished) polulation is putting a great strain on the world's scarce resources. Cut down on population and many pollution problems will go away. Ignore population growth and the planet may scuccumb to a greenhouse catastrophe much sooner than expected. In the meantime, politicians should stop blaming the auto industry when that industry can only solve a fraction of the overall problem. Perhaps it's the CO2 in all the hot air that politicians generate that will do us in.

Hahha- actually its the industrialized nations that contribute the most per capita to pollution/ energy consmption / resource consumption. Now that both China and India have a "middle class" that aspires to buy a car, its brings the consumption problem in the west to a head. If everybody consumes like we do in the West, the earth is toast. Hence new standards for a brave new world.

Ahhhhhh...... I can just smell the Co2 just melting off of that last comment. Breathe it in and get ready cause here it goes.

Population Control is a fancy word for killing old people and babies. What does any of this have to do with cars. You losers are on this website looking for the next great scoop in the auto world and here you commenting on how we should kill our children and put our favorite car companies out of business because you feel guilty for being alive. Fact is Autos only contribute about 20% towards carbon output and companies will only do what is good for business. So while you an environ"mental"ist browse this website while sitting in your office chair on the carpet in your house with latex paint and vinyl siding ooohhhh and don't forget that asphalt roof ( all made of those evil fossil fuels I might add) I could go on and on..... I can't even understand how you live with yourself by waiting for the next hot car to come out. It must be your porn addiction!!! Does your wife know about this autospies habit!!! Will she leave you if she knows that you secretly visit this website while letting slip that you want to kill babies to save the planet. Heaven forbid if she finds out about the carpet being made of a petroleum based substance. Your marriage could crumble after that........ Keep your euro, socialist environ"mental" crap off of here and while your at it why don't you quit coming to this website since you feel so guilty about just living!!

"Population Control is a fancy word for killing old people and babies."

We could always give it a better name yet, like "Retroactive Birth Management"

1. Just because some of us actually care about the planet we live on does not mean we can't also enjoy cars, going fast, technology etc. I'm sure most of us who aren't either mindblowing selfish or living with our heads in the sand want technology developments that produce cars that have both ultra low emissions AND high performance! Hydrogen fueled combustion engines could be the answer as long as hydrogen fuel can be produced in a low carbon manner.

2. Just a little foolish to suggest that people who come to the realization that fossil fuel use is harming the planet and its inhabitants should immediately stop usuing ANYTHING based on them and perhaps.......go live in a cave? We have to work together to find alternatives to conventional fossil fuel based products. ALready many alternatives to crude oil based plastics and other products are being developed using sustainable plant material.

I'm afraid you are a dying breed Jason, in the coming years you will have no choice but to open your eyes and admit that "crapping in your own home" so to speak, is not a great idea.

These rules seem to ignore where the fuel is comming from. If E85 or Ethanol fules are used in the mix, these fuels are carbon neutral.

"LexusAdmirer" asks where we are going to plant more trees. I recently drove to Nevada and California along picturesque I-15 and I simply cannot believe how much free land there is in the West. Population control does not mean killing old people and babies it means having fewer children to begin with. Developing countries are reponsible for most of the population explosion. America cannot feed the world forever so I foresee substantial deaths from war and hunger down the road if some superbug epidemic or meteor strike does not strike first.
The population issue has everything to do with cars. A smaller world population ensures increased per capita oil supplies and lower prices at the pump. Enough of useless emotional arguments and political corretness! Let's get practical and attack our problems at the source.
