BMW Continues Undisputed Worldwide Market Leadership of Premium Segment for 2006
The BMW Group increased its sales in 2006 by 3.5%. Throughout the world, 1,373,926 automobiles were delivered to customers
(previous year: 1,327,992). Sales of the BMW brand, at 1,185,049 vehicles, outstripped the previous year's figure (1,126,768) by 5.2%. Sales of the MINI brand fell by 6.2% to 188,072 deliveries (previous year: 200,428). As already stated, this is due to the building measures in the MINI plant in Oxford aimed at expanding production capacity and the changeover of production to the second generation of MINI. Rolls-Royce Motor Cars handed over 805 Phantoms to customers (previous year: 796/+1.1%). This means that, since the market launch of the Rolls-Royce brand under the umbrella of the BMW Group in 2003, sales have risen for the fourth time in a row.

Dr. Norbert Reithofer, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG, said today, at the BMW Group's press conference at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS), "These outstanding sales results mean that each of our three brands – BMW, MINI and Rolls-Royce – is the market leader in its own segment." Dr. Reithofer was also positive about the prospects for BMW Group sales in the future. "We want to continue the BMW Group's success story in 2007. That is to say, we intend to achieve new sales records for every brand."

The top selling BMW Group model series by far is still the BMW 3 Series, in its four variants – sedan, touring, coupe and convertible. In the year under review, sales of the BMW 3 Series rose by 17.1% to 508,498 units (previous year: 434,342). This means that this best-seller accounts for 43% of sales of the BMW brand. Second place, in terms of volume, is taken by the BMW 5 Series, with an increase in sales to 232,162 automobiles (previous year: 228,389/+1.7%). The 1 Series comes in third place, with 151,914 deliveries to customers (previous year: 149,493/+1.6%), followed by the BMW X3 with 113,997 deliveries (previous year: 110,719/+3.0%). Because of the end of the model cycle of the first generation, sales of the BMW X5 in 2006 fell by 25.8% to 75,356 units (previous year: 101,537). In the years before this, the BMW X5 and the X3 had each come right at the top of their segment.

The BMW 7 Series once again confirmed its strong position in the upper automobile category, with 50,199 cars delivered (previous year: 50,062/+0.3%). With sales of 30,974 vehicles (previous year: 28,874), the Z4 is 7.3% over the level of the previous year. 21,942 of the BMW 6 Series were delivered to customers (previous year: 23,340/-6.0%).

In a monthly comparison, sales of the BMW brand in December 2006 shot up by 7.8% compared with the same month last year to reach 114,995 cars delivered (previous year: 106,675).

New MINI causes sales to leap in December For the reasons described above, the lack of availability of the MINI caused a fall in sales seen over the year. The second generation of the MINI has been available in European markets since November 18, 2006. With the ramping up of production, it will now be much easier to meet the continuing high level of demand for the new MINI too. This has already led to a 39.6% increase in sales to 13,991 units (previous year: 10,020).

2006 was also a great year for BMW motorcycles, with sales reaching 100,064 vehicles. 2.7% more BMW motorcycles were delivered to customers than in the previous year (97,474). In December, 7,419 BMW motorcycles were delivered to customers (previous year: 5,425/+36.8%).

Amazing BMW success when you take in account that Mercedes has more models than BMW. But true success is net profit in which BMW is second to Toyota.

Of course BMW and Toyota are not both way behind Porsche. Agent 009 is being selective and misleading - but hey what's new!

Porsche may make more per vehicle, but then its average vehicle price is higher (particularly after options!). However Toyota's total profits dwarf those of Porsche, just as the market value of Toyota's stock dwarfs the rest of the auto industry.

Also Agent 009 misses the key point, that BMW's product line is a little smaller than MB's yet BMW can sell more and be more profitably.

I think 2008 will see a great unravelling in the strategy of MB, especially in the US, and some early evidence of this was seen in MB's dismal December 2006 US sales results.

Dismal????

"MBUSA sold 28,115 vehicles in December 2006, marking the second-highest sales month in MBUSA history – second only to December 2005, the best MBUSA sales month ever. "

You are correct. Porsche does not make more money overall, they simply do not have the volume to come close to the others. They simply make more per vehicle than any other. Kinda like WalMart vs Saks, both are very successful in their own genres.

I like Porsches but they probably only hold the title for highest profit per vehicle. I seriuosly doubt Porsche netted 13 billion last year.

I just realized two ppl already said that, well, here's 3x.

I wonder how BMW's sales were in Japan? Probably nothing to brag about judging their past numbers and Lexus' new numbers.

I think Lexus has an even smaller lineup (no 15 engine options for each car) than BMW and except Europe, they're higher.

Anyway, this thread is rather boring. That's all for me.

I'm not sure what market segment the MINI falls into but I'm quite sure Bentley has a thing or two to say about who is the market leader in that segment.

Porsche still charges extra for heated seats on the 911...which is comical for a premium vehicle.

The legendary Porsche profit margin. There is no substitute.

Good to hear that BMW is on a roll.

It is good to see a company, that is not owned by a parent organization, continue to find success. Should fund some new performance technologies that will benefit all.

I guess Bangle still has a job.

Will - I don't think thats what 530N52 was driving at.

Newsflash: Audi, Porsche, Infiniti and Lexus ARE owned by parent companies. BMW has no DIRECT competitor that's independent.

Seems that the advertisments worked or at the very least did not drive customers away like some thought they would. Will, you need to calm down a little. BMW kicked butt once again and that is a fact. People like their cars and they obviously like the styling. Even the "mighty" Lexus IS that everyone was raving about could not bring down BMW.

BMW740Z4, thank you for correcting Will. He seems to live in his own world of pixie dust and rainbows. BMW is unique in that it is not owned by another company and I think that is something to respect.

I don't think he comes from a bad place. To him, and many more people, BMW's "independence" is nothing short of a marketing scheme. Their independence has obviously done nothing for their styling, done nothing for their tech lately (iDrive? SMG? hydrogen?), and are we being forced to ignore Mini?

Saying BMW is an "independent" company is just as relevant as saying Toyota is an "independent" company, and using that to say their cars are more innovative than GM's because GM has too many divisions (as true as that is).

Why do you say that BMW's independence has done nothing for them. Even if Audi wanted to change their A6 to a radical design like the 5 series VAG would never allow it(i know they dont want to.

And people act like Audi is so far behind!

If they so much as get to 200,000 units in the US in the next few years, the gap will close- and there's only a 200,000 car range as it is, between the Big Three luxury brands (BMW, Mercedes and Audi). Of course, the top two won't stand still- but Audi is moving faster than both.

Otherwise, congrats to BMW.

It would be interesting to see what the numbers would be if you removed all sales of base models and lower end models that are not really premium at all, across all manufacturers. There might be a different story to tell.
